A Florentine family in crisis: the Strozzi in the fifteenth century.

PhDIn 1434 the Strozzi lineage had held a leading position in Florentine society and government for at least one hundred and fifty years, and was one of the largest and wealthiest of the city's patrician lineages. The records of the catasto of 1427 and of the scrutiny of 1433 are used to give a profile of the dominant social, economic and political position of the Strozzi before the advent of Medicean dominance. Their record of electoral success, and the political and cultural leadership of influential and respected men such as Palla di Nofri and Matteo di Simone, with other factors, put the Strozzi amongst the greatest enemies of the victorious Medicean regime of late 1434. The effects of political opposition and exile on the lineage are examined both directly, through records of office-holding, and indirectly through such indicators as marriage alliances and household wealth. The two most prominent lines of the Strozzi were exiled after 1434. Palla di Nofri's life and preoccupations in his Paduan exile are examined, together with the lives of his sons; none of these Strozzi ever returned to Florence, pursued as they were by the enmity of the Medicean regime. The very different careers of Filippo di Matteo and his brother Lorenzo are also examined: how they succeeded in founding a lucrative bank in Naples, and in returning to Florence to 'rebuild' (rifare) the position of the Strozzi lineage there. The final decades of the century saw the Strozzi in an economically more secure position, due substantially to the efforts of Filippo. Except for a very small number of its members admitted into the regime, most of the lineage is here shown to have remained excluded from significant political office until after the fall of the Medici regime in 1494

Filippo FIMIANI, Occhi pieni e mani vaganti. Movimenti, emozioni, astrazioni, «Fata Morgana», 12/2010, pp. 147-164. ISSN 1970-5786. ITALIANO. A short filmic example from the AMC's award-winning series Mad Men in which the sensorial and emotional relationship between the spectator and a moving body, i.e., a dancing body, is explicitly put into play. The essay wants to deal with the so called naturalization of phenomenology and of the living body, trained by the cognitive sciences reading the visuality. The author shows the relationship between the so called ‘embodied Simulation’ and a symbolic and iconographic deep memory of the pictures, and he gives an in-depth attention to the polarity between projections and introjections, activity and passivity of the spectator’s body during the empathic experience of the moving pictures

This chapter delves into the multifaceted realm of political geography within the context of the journal Political Geography. The author, who has held various editorial positions within the journal, navigates the intricate terrain of diversity and inclusion, exploring the challenges posed by linguistic and cultural biases inherent in academic publishing. The chapter critically examines efforts to mitigate barriers and broaden the scope of political geography, questioning the adequacy of current approaches. Through a reflective analysis, the author elucidates the complex dynamics of political geography as a subdiscipline, shedding light on both the impediments and possibilities it offers to researchers and students

Effects of Two Modalities of Whole-body Electrostimulation Programs and Resistance Circuit Training on Strength and Power

    No full text
The main purpose of this study was to compare the effects on strength and muscle power of a training program based on two different modalities of whole-body electrostimulation (WB-EMS) with respect to a resistance-training program aimed at improving dynamic strength. Twenty-two subjects participated in this study: Thirteen male (age 25.2±2.8 years; height 1.78±0.1 m; body mass 72.8±6.4 kg; body fat 11.6±2.3%) and nine female (age 28.2±3.5 years; height 1.63±0.05 m; body mass 56.8±7.6 kg; body fat 19.1±4.7%). Participants were randomly assigned to three groups that underwent three different 6-week training programs: two modalities of WB-EMS, based on different electrical parameters (experimental), and circuit training with overloads (control). Force-velocity curves were calculated for each participant before and after treatment. All groups improved their level of strength and muscle power (paired sample t-Test, p1) with a similar magnitude. No significant differences were observed between groups (two-way 2×3 Anova, p>0.05) at the end of the experimentation. This study suggests that WB-EMS might be considered as a valid and faster alternative - or an important complementary procedure - to a traditional overload-based resistance-training program for the development of the DS

Performance analysis in field hockey goalkeeping during penalty corners: a case study.

Abstract BACKGROUND: To investigate the kinematics of field hockey goalkeeping during penalty corners, in order to provide the first model of performance from a physical standpoint during this particular and important phase of goalkeeping that goes from the injection of the ball (the push-in) up to the shot on goal during a penalty corner. In particular, the focus was on the preparation phase before the actual saves. METHODS: Four goalkeepers playing at the international level (age: 22±2.45 years; height: 1.85±0.09 m; body weight: 79.25±8.42 kg; BMI: 23.06±0.69 kg·m-2; role experience 11.5±1.91 years; international caps: 30.00±15.25) participated in the study. A complete video footage was recorded using two high-speed video cameras, using 210 fps sampling rates. RESULTS: The goalkeepers covered 1.48±0.32 m, using 3.23±0.43 steps, from the goal line in about 1.33±0.21 s. The estimated mean acceleration was 0.93±0.54 m·s-2. Differences in these parameters were found among the goalkeepers (One-Way ANOVA; p<0.05, ES as partial η²>0.14), also demonstratinga different technical efficiency in relation to the task to be performed. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this case study confirm that the principal aim of the goalkeepers during the preparation phase of defending penalty corners is to arrive in the best position of readiness within the available time frame of about 1.5 s. They ran out from the goal line about 1.5 m, not reaching an ideal better distance (≈ 4m), for tactical reasons, concerning the possible interventions of other attackers arriving close to the posts, to enlarge the goalmouth

We investigated the physical and physiological demands of a pole dancer's performance studied during a simulated competition, lasting 3 min 30 seconds. One single woman pole dancer (age: 22 years; height: 1.56 m; body weight: 52 kg; BMI: 21.4 kg·nr2; estimated HRmax: 192.6 bpm) participated in the study. Physical data pertaining to accelerations and rotational values were collected by the means of a tri-axial accelerometer device integrating three gyroscopes. A complete video footage was recorded using four video cameras, using different sampling rates. Blood pressure (BP), heart rates (HR), breathing rates (BR), blood lactate concentrations (Bla-) were recorded during the performance. Accelerations (positive and negative), along the vertical axis reached ≈2G and rotational movements around the pole, reached ≈400°/s. BP values ranged from 120/75 before and to 145/58 mmHg at the end of performance, respectively. HRs reached a peak value of ≈96% of the maximal estimated heart rate (HRmax) and a mean %HRmax of 92.85±3.15% during the simulated competition. BR reached a peak value of 37 bpm and a mean value during competition of 31.87±3.42 bpm. Blaranged from 10.2 to 10.7 mmol/L measured at 1 min and 5 min after the completion of the competition, respectively. The results of this case study confirm that the Pole dance is a performing art requiring heavy physiological and physical demands on the performers. Specific training routines should be designed in order to cope efficiently with this physical activity, taking into account the performance model we provided with this study
