    A lysine desert protects sumo-targeted Ub ligases from auto-ubiquitination and proteolysis to maintain genome stability in yeast

    Post-translational modification by SUMO (Small Ubiquitin-like MOdifier) regulates the enzymatic activity, subcellular localization, and protein-protein interactions of modified target proteins. SUMO has also been implicated in proteasome-dependent protein degradation with the identification of a special class of enzymes termed, SUMO-Targeted Ubiquitin Ligases (STUbLs). These conserved enzymes typically possess multiple, tandem SUMO-Interaction Motifs and a RING domain that together facilitate the conjugation of ubiquitin to SUMO-modified target proteins. Originally discovered as essential gene pair for the viability of RecQ helicase-deficient yeast, SLX5 and SLX8 code for a heterodimeric STUbL. Two novel alleles of SLX5 were isolated in a forward genetic screen for suppressors of genome instability. A combination of genetic and biochemical experiments indicate that these alleles disrupt a conserved lysine desert, unique to STUbLs, leading to Slx5’s auto-ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation.     MMC performance evaluation concerning different dc breakers and converters

    Renewable energy resources are the most successful, promising, and economical mode of energy generation. Moreover, wind energy is also one of the victorious candidates in generating renewable energy. Currently, High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems are designed to integrate the energy harvested in the Offshore Wind Farms (OWF) to the grid system. The HVDC system uses AC-DC converters, and then with the help of DC cables, the power is transmitted from the offshore to the onshore area, where it again gets converted back to AC. The converters used here are called high voltage converters, where these power electronic components have the ability to sustain high voltages and current. Further, in this thesis, Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) is used for the conversion of AC to DC and vice versa. The MMC is built using stacked Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs), where these power electronic components are current sensitive in nature. Thereby, if there is a fault, and if this fault current flows through them, then these components get damaged permanently. Moreover, if the offshore MMC goes down, the OWF system has to undergo a restart. Therefore, the DC Circuit Breaker (DCCB) is used in order to clear the DC fault in an HVDC system. Meanwhile, designing a DCCB for the HVDC system is not easy, one major reason is that there are no natural zero crossings in a DC fault. Also, the fault must be cleared very quickly because DC faults have a very high rate of rising in fault currents. Earlier, the MMC protects itself by using the blocking algorithm. Here, the switching devices turn off temporarily until the fault is cleared. When they are turned off, the fault current flows through the freewheeling diodes, as diodes have the capability to withstand high currents. Indeed, if the MMC is blocked, the purpose of DCCB is not satisfied. Therefore, in this thesis, the performance of the MMC is examined with the presence of DCCBs for a 525 KV system. Besides, there are two types of DCCBs used, in order to evaluate the more suitable breaker for the system. Further, with the initial performance, the fault behavior of MMC is analyzed and illustrated. Consequently, the DC inductance, converter inductance, and arm inductance were modified in order to improve the performance of the system. On the other hand, there are two types of MMC, namely Half Bridge MMC (HBMMC) and Full Bridge MMC (FB MMC). Generally, the HB MMC are called fault feeding converters, whereas the FB MMC are called fault blocking converters. This is due to the topology of the FB MMC, where it completely blocks the fault current by itself.     Next-generation intelligent health-monitoring systems have been ushered in by mobile phones with robust computation power, affordable high-resolution cameras, and embedded wearable sensors. Wearable Electroencephalography (EEG) headset to record brain signals with simultaneous eye tracking using a mobile front camera can become a powerful tool to modulate brain activity for self-enhancement. Meditation has been proved to have great effects in neuroscientific investigations for decades. However, a naive practitioner initiates the practice with high motivation and steps down after struggling to get the feedback or follow the instructions. EEG headset and Eye-tracking technology can help beginners get real-time audio and visual feedback and encourage those who fail to continue a regular meditation session. This article proposes real-time feedback framework for generating mindful moments and trace progress while practicing. Three major components are: Learning Phase, Meditation Style Specific Feedback and Evaluation Phase. We discuss three learning moments including preparatory, disentanglement and mindful. This study facilitates the design of a neurofeedback product that can offer tailored feedback. In this review article, I aim to summarize the main findings of the paper titled: “Governance Challenges to Reducing Hunger and Malnutrition in India” authored by Mr. N.C Saxena. The various layers of challenges in governance with regards to combatting child malnutrition are discussed and the area that needs improvement is highlighted. Along with emphasizing the key issues raised by the author, I have also included NFHS 5 (2021) data to elucidate the severity of child malnutrition in India

    On Design of a Triple Elliptical Super Wideband Antenna for 5G Applications

    A novel compact triple elliptical monopole antenna has been designed, analyzed and fabricated for super wideband applications. To enhance the impedance bandwidth, the author proposed a monopole antenna with a triple elliptical patch excited by a 50Ω50\Omega triangular tapered microstrip feedline. Further improvement is achieved by optimally modifying the Defected Ground Structure (DGS) of the antenna. The proposed patch structure is mounted on a Roger’s RT-Duroid 5880 substrate ( ϵr\epsilon _{r} = 2.2, tan δ=0.0009\delta = 0.0009 ) and has compact physical dimensions of 27 mm ×29.5\times29.5 mm. The fabricated antenna covers the frequency band from 1.91 GHz to 43.5 GHz for S1110\text{S}_{11}\leq -10 dB with a fractional bandwidth of > 183.17% and has a ratio bandwidth of 22.77:1. This extended bandwidth coverage permits the antenna to operate for wide range of application including 5G and Internet of Things (IoT). The proposed antenna has a very high Bandwidth Dimension Ratio (BDR) of 5761.87 which makes it the best candidate for superwideband antenna. Far field measurements disclose an omnidirectional radiation pattern across the frequency of operation. Further, the farfield Radar Cross Section (RCS) is analyzed through simulation and it is to be noted that relatively low values are obtained through out the frequency of operation. In addition, the compactness of the proposed antenna is theoretically verified with the aid of fundamental dimension limit theorem

    Modular load flow for restructured power systems

    In the subject of power systems, authors felt that a re-look is necessary at some conventional methods of analysis. In this book, the authors have subjected the time-honoured load flow to a close scrutiny. Authors have discovered and discussed a new load flow procedure – Modular Load Flow. Modular Load Flow explores use of power – a scalar – as source for electrical circuits which are conventionally analysed by means of phasors – the ac voltages or currents. The method embeds Kirchhoff’s circuit laws as topological property into its scalar equations and results in a unique wonderland where phase angles do not exist! Generators are shown to have their own worlds which can be superimposed to obtain the state of the composite power system. The treatment is useful in restructured power systems where stakeholders and the system operators may desire to know individual generator contributions in line flows and line losses for commercial reasons. Solution in Modular Load Flow consists of explicit expressions which are applicable with equal ease to well-conditioned, ill-conditioned and very low voltage situations. It is found to be computationally much faster than the iterative load flows and indicates promise for online application. Indian blackouts of July 30 and 31, 2012 are analysed using an equivalent grid network to indicate its utility. Besides its ability to deal with ground reality in power systems, Modular Load Flow points to a theory that unveils interesting mathematical structures which should entice avid researchers. Second author has had first author as teacher and third author as student. The lecture notes therefore reflect ethos of three generations of teachers.

    The poetics and politics of ‘progress’ in neoliberal India: The state and its margins in Shanghai (2012)

    The contemporary Indian state is exemplified by contradictions. Its workings are marked by a simultaneous retreat and deepening of state power under neoliberalism as well as burgeoning governmentalities that both produce and police political dissent. Such framings of the state problematize received political wisdom on the relations between centre and margin, state and government, citizen and subject. Anthropological approaches to the state map out its complex organizational logics, which are further embedded in the exercise of power and violence. Drawing on such approaches, this article examines the 2012 Indian film Shanghai, directed by Dibakar Banerjee. Based on Greek author Vassilis Vassilikos’ 1966 novel Z, Shanghai represents the contemporary neoliberal Indian state’s workings in the fictitious periurban town of Bharatnagar, slated to become a world-class Special Economic Zone. However, when a left-wing activist opposing land acquisition is fatally injured in an ‘accident’, a state bureaucrat’s investigation unravels how the onward march of pragati (‘progress’) is undergirded by violence. Taking Shanghai as an example of ‘realist fiction’, I examine both representations and realities of the neoliberal Indian state using a thick and nuanced reading of the film’s narrative, cinematic details, context and characters, situating them in anthropological discussions on the state and its margins in contemporary India

    Limberg flap for reconstruction after excision of multiple conglomerate epidermoid cysts

    Epidermoid cysts are common, subepidermal, keratin containing nodules, found anywhere on the body in 3rd and 4th decade of life. Surgical treatment is by complete excision with wall of cyst intact. Author presents a 40-year-old male with multiple sebaceous cysts in close proximity to one another on his left thigh. Individual cyst excision would have lead to a difficult primary closure, need for multiple incisions, with contracture and poor cosmesis due to the close proximity of the cysts. instead, the cysts were excised in mass and limberg flap was used for reconstruction and primary closure. Patient was followed up for 6 months. The objective of this study was to prove that limberg flap yields superior cosmesis and healing by primary intention in reconstruction after excision of multiple epidermoid cysts

    Effects of built environment on healing the mental health of the people–literature review

    Purpose – The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been reported to have a major impact on the mental health of an individual. Healing the mental stress, anxiety, depression and insomnia of an individual's immediate surroundings play a major role. Therefore, this study reviews how the built environment impacts the healing of an individual's state of mind. Design/methodology/approach – Various works of literature on healing environments were analysed to create frameworks that can facilitate psychological healing through architectural elements. Articles were selected from various journals like SAGE, PubMed, Journal of Applied and Computational Mechanics (JACM), Routledge Taylor and Francis, Journal of Contemporary Urban Affairs (JCUA), ScienceDirect, and Emerald databases, news articles, official web pages, and magazines that have been referred. Findings – Indicators (spatial, sensory comfort, safety, security, privacy and social comfort) are linked to sub-indicators (access, distractions and views) and design characteristics (indoor climate, interior view, outside view, privacy, communication, noise, daylighting, temperature) which help in better connection of the built environment with individual's mental health. From the above indicators, sub-indicators and design characteristics, the authors have come to a conclusion that a view to the outside with better social interaction has an in-depth effect on an individual's mental health. Research limitations/implications – This study predominantly talks about healing in hospitals but quarantining of COVID-19 patients happens in residences too. So, it is important to find the healing characteristics in residences and in which typology the recovery process is high.
