Hermitian matrices of three parameters: Perturbing coalescing eigenvalues and a numerical method
In this work we consider Hermitian matrix-valued functions of 3 (real) parameters, and are interested in generic coalescing points of eigenvalues, conical intersections. Unlike our previous works [L. Dieci, A. Papini and A. Pugliese, Approximating coalescing points for eigenvalues of Hermitian matrices of three parameters, SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 2013] and [L. Dieci and A. Pugliese, Hermitian matrices depending on three parameters: Coalescing eigenvalues, Linear Algebra Appl., 2012], where we worked directly with the Hermitian problem and monitored variation of the geometric phase to detect conical intersections inside a sphere-like region, here we consider the following construction: (i) Associate to the given problem a real symmetric problem, twice the size, all of whose eigenvalues are now (at least) double, (ii) perturb this enlarged problem so that, generically, each pair of consecutive eigenvalues coalesce along curves, and only there, (iii) analyze the structure of these curves, and show that there is a small curve, nearly planar, enclosing the original conical intersection point. We will rigorously justify all of the above steps. Furthermore, we propose and implement an algorithm following the above approach, and illustrate its performance in locating conical intersections
Integrating agency and resource dependence theory: Firm profitability, industry regulation, and board task performance
Boards of directors are key governance mechanisms in organizations and fulfil two main tasks: monitoring managers and firm performance, and providing advice and access to resources. In spite of a wealth of research much remains unknown about how boards attend to the two tasks. This study investigates whether organizational (firm profitability) and environmental factors (industry regulation) affect board tasks performance. The data combine CEOs’ responses to a questionnaire, and archival data from a sample of large Italian firms. Findings show that past firm performance is negatively associated with board monitoring and advice tasks; greater industry regulation enhances perceived board tasks performance; board monitoring and advice tasks tend to reinforce each other, despite their theoretical and practical distinction
SENSORIA Patterns: Augmenting Service Engineering with Formal Analysis, Transformation and Dynamicity
The IST-FET Integrated Project Sensoria is developing a novel comprehensive approach to the engineering of service-oriented software systems where foundational theories, techniques and methods are fully integrated into pragmatic software engineering processes. The techniques and tools of Sensoria encompass the whole software development cycle, from business and architectural design, to quantitative and qualitative analysis of system properties, and to transformation and code generation. The Sensoria approach takes also into account reconfiguration of service-oriented architectures (SOAs) and re-engineering of legacy systems.
In this paper we give first a short overview of Sensoria and then present a pattern language for augmenting service engineering with formal analysis, transformation and dynamicity. The patterns are designed to help software developers choose appropriate tools and techniques to develop service-oriented systems with support from formal methods. They support the whole development process, from the modelling stage to deployment activities and give an overview of many of the research areas pursued in the Sensoria project
Using formal methods to develop WS-BPEL applications
In recent years, WS-BPEL has become a de facto standard language for orchestration of Web Services. However, there are still some well-known difficulties that make programming
in WS-BPEL a tricky task. In this paper, we firstly point out major loose points of the WS-BPEL specification by means of many examples, some of which are also exploited
to test and compare the behaviour of three of the most known freely available WS-BPEL engines. We show that, as a matter of fact, these engines implement different
semantics, which undermines portability of WS-BPEL programs over different platforms. Then we introduce Blite, a prototypical orchestration language equipped with a formal
operational semantics, which is closely inspired by, but simpler than, WS-BPEL. Indeed, Blite is designed around some of WS-BPEL distinctive features like partner links, process termination, message correlation, long-running business transactions and compensation handlers. Finally, we present BliteC, a software tool supporting a rapid and easy development of WS-BPEL applications via translation of service orchestrations written in Blite into executable WS-BPEL programs. We illustrate our approach by means of a running example borrowed from the official specification of WS-BPEL
Boards of directors’ contribution to strategy and innovation
Boards of directors are expected to contribute to companies’ success and value creation. Both literature in management and governance, and investors and society at large claim that boards should be actively involved in shaping and defining firms’ strategic posture and orientation in addition to the classical monitoring function. Within this broader “strategic task”, fostering innovation, venturing and corporate entrepreneurship are particularly relevant especially in highly competitive contexts. Nevertheless, in spite of a growing awareness and calls for higher involvement of boards into decision-making processes and corporate entrepreneurship, there is still dearth of clarity around the underlying theoretical rationale, determinants and effects of their strategic contribution. This chapter reviews the evolution of governance and management studies over time, highlighting the main contributions and presenting open issues which constitute potential avenues for future research

Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Tradução, Florianópolis, 2013.Com a intenção de delinear o modo pelo qual o escritor italiano Alessandro Baricco se inseriu no sistema literário brasileiro e os caminhos percorridos pelos seus livros traduzidos, esta dissertação dá voz às experiências tradutórias de seus tradutores. A inserção de Bariccono Brasil tem seu início em 1997, através de uma proposição da Profa. Dra. Roberta Barni à editora Iluminuras da tradução de Oceano Mare. A partir daí, outras sete obras foram publicadas no Brasil, sendo três delas traduzidas por Roberta Barni e as outras quatro por quatro tradutores diferentes. De um lado, considera-se o tradutor como figura principal namediação entre culturas, e, de outro, se analisa a realidade desta figuradentro do sistema literário, sua invisibilidade, seus limites e o exercíciode sua profissão. A pesquisa conta, ainda, com críticas e resenhas referentes ao autor italiano publicadas em jornais consagrados no Brasil, considerando estas como parte constituinte da imagem de Baricco refletida em território nacional. Abstract : Intending to delineate the way the Italian writer Alessandro Baricco has been inserted in the Brazilian literary system and the paths his translated books have followed, this thesis gives voice to the translating experiences of his translators. Baricco's insertion in Brazil began in 1997, through a personal project of Dr. Roberta Barni, with her translation of Oceano Mare. Since then, seven other of his works have been published in Brazil, three of which were translated by Roberta Barni and the other four by four different translators. On the one hand,the translator is considered as the main figure in mediation betweencultures and, on the other, this figure's reality is analyzed within theliterary system: its invisibility, its limits and its professional practice. Criticisms and reviews of this Italian author published in well established Brazilian newspapers are also considered, with the understanding that they are part of Baricco's image reflected here

Service discovery and negotiation with COWS
To provide formal foundations to current (web) services technologies, we put forward using COWS, a process calculus for specifying, combining and analysing services, as a uniform formalism for modelling all the relevant phases of the life cycle of service-oriented applications, such as publication, discovery, negotiation, deployment and execution. In this paper, we show that constraints and operations on them can be smoothly incorporated in COWS, and propose a disciplined way to model multisets of constraints and to manipulate them through appropriate interaction protocols. Therefore, we demonstrate that also QoS requirement specifications and SLA achievements, and the phases of dynamic service discovery and negotiation can be comfortably modelled in COWS. We illustrate our approach through a scenario for a service-based web hosting provider
