Mind the gender gap: the impact of university education on the entrepreneurial entry of female and male STEM graduates

Women are consistently underrepresented among graduate entrepreneurs. This is especially true among the entrepreneurs who graduate in STEM fields. Here, we aim at identifying factors that reduce/enlarge the gender imbalance in entrepreneurship among STEM graduates. In particular, we explore the underinvestigated association between university education in STEM fields and entrepreneurial entry of recent female and male graduates considering graduates’ whole university curriculum. Our analyses on the graduates who obtained a Master of Science degree in the 2005–2009 period from Politecnico di Milano reveal that training in economics and management reduces the gender imbalance in entrepreneurial entry among STEM recent graduates. The gap is instead larger among the graduates who attended courses that aggregate students from different STEM fields or did an internship

This paper firstly aims to shed light on the concept of mountain, underlining the importance of interpreting mountains as a baseline for the development of territorial policies. Although mountains are traditionally recognized as marginal areas, tourism and planning have been recognized as an important vector for countering the effects of marginalization and for the revitalization of these areas. Thus, this paper also aims at analysing the current project initiatives in the Italian mountains, through a selected sample of 250 initiatives. The study offers a theoretical contribution, through the analysis of the tourist projects and the identification of two different profiles attributable to the Alpine and Apennine areas. The research also provides practical implications that enable a better understanding of how to improve tourism planning in the most disadvantaged contexts of the Italian mountains

    Interpretative reports and critical values.

In the clinical laboratory to allow an effective testing process, post-analytical activity can have two goals in trying to improve patient safety: result interpretation and communication of critical values. Both are important issues, and their success requires a cooperative effort. Misinterpretation of laboratory test results or ineffectiveness in their notification can lead to diagnostic errors or errors in identifying patient critical conditions. With the awareness that the incorrect interpretation of tests and the breakdown in the communication of critical values are preventable errors, laboratorians should make every effort to prevent the types of errors that potentially harm patients. In order to improve the reliability of laboratories, we attempt to explain how interpretative reporting and automated notification of critical values can be used to reduce errors. Clinical laboratories can therefore work to improve clinical effectiveness, without forgetting that everything should be designed to provide the best outcomes for patients

Start-ups launched by recent STEM university graduates: The impact of university education on entrepreneurial entry

University education is a crucial source of human capital and influences graduates’ choice of entrepreneurship as a career. Here, we discuss the contrasting effects on recent graduates’ entrepreneurial entry of the type and quality of the human capital developed through university education in STEM fields. We determine which effects prevail by examining the graduates who obtained a Master of Science degree in the period 2005–2009 from Politecnico di Milano. A university curriculum specialized into a limited number of scientific and technical fields, training in economics and management, and the scientific quality of the university in the research fields pertinent to the graduate's degree programme are positively associated with entrepreneurial entry immediately after graduation, while the graduation grade is not. The graduation grade and the scientific quality of the university positively moderate the impact of curriculum specialization. These effects weaken over time, but are still relevant five years after graduation
