Measuring utility with diffusion models
The diffusion model (DDM) is a prominent account of how people make decisions. Many of these
decisions involve comparing two alternatives based on differences of perceived stimulus magnitudes,
such as economic values. Here, we propose a consistent estimator for the parameters of a DDM in
such cases. This estimator allows us to derive decision thresholds, drift rates, and subjective percepts
(i.e., utilities in economic choice) directly from the experimental data. This eliminates the need to
measure these values separately or to assume specific functional forms for them. Our method also
allows one to predict drift rates for comparisons that did not occur in the dataset. We apply the
method to two datasets, one comparing probabilities of earning a fixed reward and one comparing
objects of variable reward value. Our analysis indicates that both datasets conform well to the DDM.
Interestingly, we find that utilities are linear in probability and slightly convex in reward

A behavioral characterization of the Drift Diffusion Model and its multi-alternative extension for choice under time pressure
In this paper, we provide an axiomatic foundation for the value-based version of the Drift Diffusion Model (DDM) of Ratcliff (1978), a successful model that describes two-alternative speeded decisions between consumer goods. Our axioms present a test for model misspeciÖcation and connect the externally observable properties of choice with an important neurophysiological account of how choice is internally implemented. We then extend our axiomatic analysis to multi-alternative choice under time pressure. In a nutshell, we show that binary DDM comparisons of the alternatives, paired with Markovian exploration of the consideration set, approximately lead to softmaximization
Nuclear labelling in primordial germ cells of Rana dalmatina embryos by Dolichos biflorus agglutinin
Migrating primordial germ cells of Rana dalmatina embryos were labelled by Dolichos biflorus agglutinin. Confocal microscopy analysis demonstrates the nuclear localisation of the labelling. The glycoconjugate is expressed by primordial germ cells throughout the entire migration process, but it is no longer detectable in late intragonadal primordial germ cells. These data suggest that the a-N-acetylgalactosamine-containing glycoconjugates in the nucleus of primordial germ cells may play a functional role in primordial germ cells protection against differentiation during the migration process. The temporal correlation between disappearance of nuclear Dolichos biflorus agglutinin positivity and colonisation of the gonadal ridges, may be explained by a change in the functional status of primordial germ cells nuclear glycoconjugates in relation with the onset of primordial germ cells differentiation
Push-push X band GaInP/GaAs VCO with a fully monolithic microstrip resonator
In this paper the design of a VCO using GaInP/GaAs HBT technology is presented. The VCO is designed to be a part of a PDH point to point radio system. To achieve low phase noise performances GaInP/GaAs HBT technology and push-push topology have been chosen. The MMIC includes predistorters to emphasize the second harmonic, f/sub 0//2 prescalers for PLL locking and buffer amplifiers. A fully monolithic microstrip resonator is coupled with integrated varactors to achieve the specified tuning bandwidth. Phase noise, bandwidth and power measurements will also be presente
C Band DROs Using Microwave Bipolar Devices
A silicon self-aligned-emitter bipolar process
from STMicroelectronics for very high efficiency handsets
power applications has been used to build two Dielectric
Resonator Oscillators. Despite this technology addresses the
mobile telephony frequency range at 1.8GHz, the oscillators
generate a stable reference at 6GHz and 7.5GHz with good
phase noise performance. A low frequency noise model has
been identified and implemented in a Gummel Poon BJT
nonlinear model. A design technique to optimize stability
and phase noise performances has been used. The DROs
exhibit phase noise of -116dBc/Hz and -107dBc/Hz at 10KHz
offset from the carrier at 6GHz and 7.5GHz, respectively
This paper recalls the rich personal and intellectual relationship between Massimo Pavarini and Iñaki Rivera Beiras. Predoni a casa nostra e il geografo solidale: Massimo Quaini tra terra e acqua
In accordance with the main goals of this collection of essays in honour of Massimo Quaini, the text focuses on a peculiar character of the Ligurian geographer’s sensibility, his attention to landscape protectionresearch activity developed in the context of the humanistic geography. Starting from a personal narrative based on his own reminiscences and neglected memories, the author tries to shed light on the relationships between civil commitment and cultural reflection which characterize environmental sensitivity, bringing together his interests with Quaini’s emotional geographies. Finally, some of Quaini’s everyday practicalities are highlighted as the easiest doorway to improve the cognitive procedures of cultural geography
