Proceedings of the 6th Gesture and Speech in Interaction Conference / Encouraging gesture use in a narration task increases speakers gesture rate, gesture salience and the production of representational gestures

Previous work has shown the positive effect of encouraging gestures in performing varioustasks; in these studies, the participants generally appeared to gesture more when explicitlyasked to do it. However, little attention has been paid to whether encouraging gestures alsoaffects other gesture features, i.e., gesture type and salience. In this paper we explore this issue.Twenty native Italian speakers described the content of short comic strips to a listener in 2conditions: Non-Encouraging gestures (N); Encouraging gestures (E). Co-speech gestures weremanually coded and classified according to gesture type (Representational vs. Non-Representational) and gesture salience (Salient vs Non-Salient). The results show thatinstructing speakers to gesture led to an increase in gesture rate, in gesture salience, and in thenumber of representational gestures. By contrast, in the non-encouraging condition the rate ofNon-Salient gestures was significantly higher, but no difference was found for Non-Representational gestures.Alice Cravotta, Pilar Prieto and M. Luis Prieto semiootiline teooria

See võimaldab lähendada Prieto kontseptsioone praegusaegse üldsemiootika teooriaga. Luis Jorge Prieto (1926–1996) was an Argentinian semiotician and linguist, the last holder of Ferdinand de Saussure’s chair in general linguistics in the University of Geneva, Switzerland. Yet, outside Italian semiotics, where his influence is felt in the works of scholars like Umberto Eco, Tullio de Mauro, and Paolo Fabbri, and the French-speaking milieu of the discipline, Prieto remains to be a little-known author. This dissertation, the first one written about him in English, provides Prieto's intellectual biography and a theoretical and historical analysis of his works, based on bibliographical sources and on archival research carried out at the Universities of Córdoba, Buenos Aires and Geneva. It includes, as well, a study on the heuristic capacities of Prieto’s theory in the light of contemporary semiotics. In this regard, Prieto's conceptual system, which includes several original concepts –pertinence, classification system, semiotic structure, among others –, is analyzed in relation to other scholars of semiotics, both classical, like Ferdinand de Saussure, Jakob von Uexküll, Louis Hjelmslev, Roman Jakobson, and contemporaries, like John Deely and Terrence Deacon. This allows to approximate Prieto’s concepts as the building blocks of a general semiotic theory. The formulation of such a general semiotics is achieved by conceiving semiotics as a discipline which studies the arbitrariness of meaning in all its forms, and the consequences that follow from meaning and signs being arbitrary. In addition, the dissertation includes two annotated translations of two seminal articles of Prieto that have not appeared in English before.https://www.ester.ee/record=b550784

"El ejercicio de la palabra hablada" of Guillermo Prieto is a vein not yet explored by criticism, although the recovery of this part of his cultural inheritance is of great importance, as muchfor literary history as for biographical knowledge of the author.

    No full text
Antonio Prieto´s novel Secretum is seen in these lines as a poetic biography where the author rewrites Petrarch´s Canzoniere in a dialogue among many voices and within a science fiction novel pattern. The same way that Petrarch in his Canzoniere talks to Saint Augustine as he himself did with God in his Confessions. It is indeed the same dialogue that every reader holds with the books he reads. This novel is therefore analyzed as the mythical fusion between Antonio Prieto and Petrarch in an attempt to rescue and save the past (as the author himself states through one of his characters) and in so doing Antonio Prieto becomes a modern interlocutor laden with memory.
