4-D Tomographic Inference: Application to SPECT and MR-driven PET
Emission tomographic imaging is framed in the Bayesian and information theoretic framework. The first part of the thesis is inspired by the new possibilities offered by PET-MR systems, formulating models and algorithms for 4-D tomography and for the integration of information from multiple imaging modalities. The second part of the thesis extends the models described in the first part, focusing on the imaging hardware. Three key aspects for the design of new imaging systems are investigated: criteria and efficient algorithms for the optimisation and real-time adaptation of the parameters of the imaging hardware; learning the characteristics of the imaging hardware; exploiting the rich information provided by depthof- interaction (DOI) and energy resolving devices. The document concludes with the description of the NiftyRec software toolkit, developed to enable 4-D multi-modal tomographic inference

Multi-atlas propagation whole heart segmentation from MRI and CTA using a local normalised correlation coefficient criterion
Accurate segmentation of the whole heart from 3D image sequences is an important step in the developement of clinical applications. As manual delineation is a tedious task that is prone to errors and dependant on the expertise of the observer, fully automated segmentation methods are highly desirable. In this work, we present a fully automated method for the segmentation of the whole heart and the great vessels from 3D images. The method is based on a muti-atlas propagation segmentation scheme, that has been proven to be succesful in brain segmentation. Based on a cross correlation metric, our method selects the best atlases for propagation allowing the refinement of the segmentation at each iteration of the propagation. We show that our method allows segmentation from multiple image modalities by validating it on computed tomography angiography (CTA) and magnetic resonance images (MRI). Our results are comparable to state-of-the-art methods on CTA and MRI with average Dice scores of 90.9% and 89.0% for the whole heart when evaluated on a 23 and 8 cases, respectively
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Heritability analysis of surface-based cortical thickness estimation on a large twin cohort
The aim of this paper is to assess the heritability of cerebral cortex, based on measurements of grey matter (GM) thickness derived from structural MR images (sMRI). With data acquired from a large twin cohort (328 subjects), an automated method was used to estimate the cortical thickness, and EM-ICP surface registration algorithm was used to establish the correspondence of cortex across the population. An ACE model was then employed to compute the heritability of cortical thickness. Heritable cortical thickness measures various cortical regions, especially in frontal and parietal lobes, such as bilateral postcentral gyri, superior occipital gyri, superior parietal gyri, precuneus, the orbital part of the right frontal gyrus, right medial superior frontal gyrus, right middle occipital gyrus, right paracentral lobule, left precentral gyrus, and left dorsolateral superior frontal gyrus
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. A Multi-Path Approach to Histology Volume Reconstruction
This paper presents a method for correcting erratic pairwise registrations when reconstructing a volume from 2D histology slices. Due to complex and unpredictable alterations of the content of histology images, a pairwise rigid registration between two adjacent slices may fail systematically. Conversely, a neighbouring registration, which potentially involves one of these two slices, will work. This grounds our approach: using correct spatial correspondences established through neighbouring registrations to account for direct failures. We propose to search the best alignment of every couple of adjacent slices from a finite set of transformations that involve neighbouring slices in a transitive fashion. Using the proposed method, we obtained reconstructed volumes with increased coherence compared to the classical pairwise approach, both in synthetic and real data
