Philological Remarks on Two Genealogies of the Crimean-Tatar Clan Shirin

    No full text
Objectives: Philological analysis of two genealogies of the Crimean-Tatar clan termed the Shirin, and an identification of a possible common source of these genealogies. Research materials: Two genealogies (family-trees) of the most prominent clan of the Crimean Khanate, the Shirin, have survived. The earlier one was preserved in the chronicle of the ʿUmdetü l aḫbār ‘Essence of Histories’ (1748), written by ʿAbdu l Ġaffār Qırımī, a historian of the Crimean Khanate and judge on Shirin estates. The later one was presented by clan-members after 1807 to the Crimean Assembly of Nobility (Таврическое дворянское собрание) for the recognition of their noble status and estates. This version was translated into Russian and published by Lashkov. Therefore, the question arises: can the two genealogies have a common source? Results and the novelty of the research: Through a philological comparison of the material, the aim of the author was to demonstrate that the genealogies of the Shirin clan show similarities in content, structure, and text. The author supposes that the texts of ʿAbdu l Ġaffār Qırımī and the genealogy preserved in Russian translation could have been compiled from the same source, perhaps a preliminary Shirin genealogy which, judging from its content, the author dates to the 1660s

The thesis with the title "Women Without Men. The cinematic presentation of literature in the works of the Iranian exile artist Shirin Neshat" deals with the life and career of the artist Shirin Neshat with a particular focus on the use of literature as part of her art, or least as inspiration for it. Her artistic development culminating in the movie adaptation of Women Without Men is illustrated by addressing her photography and video installations. To clarify the intention of Neshats work, it is important to mention her origin and to explain the relationship between Shirin Neshat and her native country, Iran. Thus the first chapter analyses the background of the artist. The second chapter depicts the commencing collaboration between her and the author Shahrnush Parsipur, who wrote Women Without Men, a novel about five different Iranian women in the 1950ies.Through the topic of transforming the novel into an adapted version for filming and further into a movie, the third chapter depicts Shirin Neshats long and time consuming dedication for (and study of) literature. The present thesis doesn?t provide an exact list of Shirin Neshat?s work, but tries to portray the style and the most important aspects of her artwork through emphasising on her first feature film Women Without Men.vorgelegt von Angela HaberzettlZsfassung dt. u. engl. Shirin Ebadi and Gloria Steinem on Perspective as Key to Addressing Violence

    No full text
This piece is based on conversations the author had with Gloria Steinem and Shirin Ebadi over the years; and explores the concept of stayagraha in the backdrop of the feminist movement, terrorism and state sponsored violence. It draws out Gloria’s understanding of stayagraha and non-violence, and is an attempt at understanding the psyche which has sustained Ebadi’s non-violent struggle for peace and human rights in Iran all through these years, despite the vitriolic attacks on her by the state. </jats:p

The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 45-47).We present cell gels, a platform for high-throughput multiplexed measurements of transcriptome and proteome in single cells. This method takes advantage of droplet barcoding and hydrogel chemistry to capture mRNAs and proteins in thousands of cells. We report the challenges of acquiring sequencing data from cell gels due to complex mechanisms underlying bead based library prep in polyacrylamide gels. We show the applications of this method in detecting intracellular proteins, sorting based on intracellular markers after cell lysis, and expanding thousands of cells in single droplets.by Shirin Shivaei.M. A comparative study of Shirin and Layla in Khamsa of Nizami Ganjavi

Lyrical literature is one of the most important and famous types in Persian literature, which is used to express romantic themes and it has been common in various forms such as ghazal and masnavi (double-rhymed verses). The fifth century poet Unsuri’s Vāmiq u ‘Adhrā, Ayyuqi’s Varqa wa Golshāh, Fakhruddin As'ad Gurgani’s Vis and Rāmin are among the famous works in this type of literature. However, this type of literature reached its height in the sixth century in the form of masnavi by Nizami Ganjavi, who among lyrical and romantic poets, according to the masters of speech, no poet has ever achieved his success in storytelling and the evolution of this type of literature. Taking the importance of “Shirin” and “Layla” in the well-known poetries of “Khosrow and Shirin” and “Layla and Majnun” into account, in order to clarify the layers and dimensions of their personality and society on one hand and in attempt to identify the effect of society and parents in forming one’s personality and life on the other hand, the author first presents the summaries of these two stories and then tries to compare and contrast these two elegant characters- according to the characterization of the master and the storyteller of Ganja- and compare their parents and the society among which they were living.

Influence of wastewater treatment plant discharges on microplastic concentrations in surface water

    No full text
The abundance of microplastic particles in the marine environment is well documented, but less is known about microplastics in the freshwater environment. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) do not effectively remove microplastics allowing for their release to the freshwater environment. To investigate concentration of microplastic in fresh water and the impact of WWTP effluent, samples were collected upstream and downstream of four major municipal WWTPs on the Raritan River, NJ. Microplastics were categorized into three quantitative categories (500-2000 µm, 250-500 µm, 125-250 µm), and one semi-quantitative category (63-125 µm). Then, microplastics were classified as primary (manufactured in small size) or secondary (derived from larger plastics) based on morphology. The concentration of microplastics in the 125-250 and 250-500µm size categories significantly increased downstream of WWTP. The smaller size classes, often not quantified in microplastic studies, were in high relative abundance across sampling sites. While primary microplastics significantly increased downstream of WWTP, secondary microplastic was the dominant type in the quantitative size categories (66-88%). Interestingly, no correlation between microplastic and distance downstream was observed. These results have implications for understanding the fate and transport of microplastics in the freshwater environment.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Shirin Estahbanat
