"Irresponsible lending" with a better informed lender

    No full text
We present a simple model of personal finance in which an incumbent lender has an information advantage vis-a-vis both potential competitors and households. In order to extract more consumer surplus, a lender with sufficient market power may engage in "irresponsible"lending, approving credit even if this is knowingly against a household’s best interest. Unless rival lenders are equally well informed, competition may reduce welfare. This holds, in particular, if less informed rivals can free ride on the incumbent’s superior screening ability

An End-To-End Machine Learning Project for Detection of Stuck Pipe Symptoms During Tripping Operations

Non-productive time due to stuck pipe costs the Oil and Gas industry substantial losses amounting to $250 million annually [1]. Thus, it is imperative for companies to invest in tools that can aid in prevention. This study integrates different concepts and methodologies from Petroleum Engineering, Data Analysis, and Machine Learning (ML). It aims to identify and extract hook load signatures before a stuck pipe event that can be used to train an ML model. The lack of transparent and consistent frameworks in many published papers using the same approach proved to be a problem. Hence, it is also our aim to present all the algorithms used. In a Machine Learning project, data preparation accounts for about 80% of the work [2, 3]. For this reason, the author developed two web-based applications for cleaning and exploring raw drilling data. These provided time savings given the time constraints of this project. Once the data was prepared, maximum and local minimum hook loads were extracted for tripping out and tripping in operations, respectively. During the study, a new concept for extracting the local minimum hook load was developed. It was able to identify the trend deviation as early as 4 hours and 30 minutes before the reported stuck pipe. Furthermore, all the extracted maximum and local minimum hook loads distinguished trend deviation between normal and deteriorating downhole conditions. This was not possible when basing solely on the real-time hook load. Moreover, a long short term-memory network was trained using 50% of the extracted hook load signatures. This model was designed to predict and identify hook load trends during tripping operations. Then using the remaining data, the model was evaluated. Results showed that the model predicted hook loads with a mean absolute error of <3% from the average expected value. The model also resembled trends with a delay of utmost 20 minutes or six stands, particularly during the deteriorating conditions. Despite the model failing to forecast, it detected a deteriorating condition three hours before the stuck pipe incident. These results were heavily dependent on the amount and quality of data. Out of seven wells provided, only three were functional, having at least 0.2 Hz of measurement. Further studies involving gathering more high quality drilling data and retraining the model are recommended to be able to create a model capable of forecasting the trend deviations earlier than the currently developed model

Implementation of Web Query Languages Reconsidered

    No full text
Visions of the next generation Web such as the "Semantic Web" or the "Web 2.0" have triggered the emergence of a multitude of data formats. These formats have different characteristics as far as the shape of data is concerned (for example tree- vs. graph-shaped). They are accompanied by a puzzlingly large number of query languages each limited to one data format. Thus, a key feature of the Web, namely to make it possible to access anything published by anyone, is compromised. This thesis is devoted to versatile query languages capable of accessing data in a variety of Web formats. The issue is addressed from three angles: language design, common, yet uniform semantics, and common, yet uniform evaluation. % Thus it is divided in three parts: First, we consider the query language Xcerpt as an example of the advocated class of versatile Web query languages. Using this concrete exemplar allows us to clarify and discuss the vision of versatility in detail. Second, a number of query languages, XPath, XQuery, SPARQL, and Xcerpt, are translated into a common intermediary language, CIQLog. This language has a purely logical semantics, which makes it easily amenable to optimizations. As a side effect, this provides the, to the best of our knowledge, first logical semantics for XQuery and SPARQL. It is a very useful tool for understanding the commonalities and differences of the considered languages. Third, the intermediate logical language is translated into a query algebra, CIQCAG. The core feature of CIQCAG is that it scales from tree- to graph-shaped data and queries without efficiency losses when tree-data and -queries are considered: it is shown that, in these cases, optimal complexities are achieved. CIQCAG is also shown to evaluate each of the aforementioned query languages with a complexity at least as good as the best known evaluation methods so far. For example, navigational XPath is evaluated with space complexity O(q d) and time complexity O(q n) where q is the query size, n the data size, and d the depth of the (tree-shaped) data. CIQCAG is further shown to provide linear time and space evaluation of tree-shaped queries for a larger class of graph-shaped data than any method previously proposed. This larger class of graph-shaped data, called continuous-image graphs, short CIGs, is introduced for the first time in this thesis. A (directed) graph is a CIG if its nodes can be totally ordered in such a manner that, for this order, the children of any node form a continuous interval. CIQCAG achieves these properties by employing a novel data structure, called sequence map, that allows an efficient evaluation of tree-shaped queries, or of tree-shaped cores of graph-shaped queries on any graph-shaped data. While being ideally suited to trees and CIGs, the data structure gracefully degrades to unrestricted graphs. It yields a remarkably efficient evaluation on graph-shaped data that only a few edges prevent from being trees or CIGs

The founding of this nation cannot be separated from the ups and downs of life, the influx of narcotics into the social life of the nation causing the aspirations towards independence to recede eternal in accordance with the objectives of the proclamation. Narcotics abuse is The development of this problem in Indonesia is very worrying. Viewed from a social aspect, this problem does not only have a negative impact on the self the user, but also towards the family, social environment, community environment, it can even threaten and endanger the future of the nation and state. Based on the problems researched by the author, the legal research method is used normative. Normative legal research methods or legal research methods Literature is a method or method used in legal research This is done by researching existing library materials. Narcotics addicts are people who use or abuse narcotics and in circumstances dependence on narcotics, both physically and psychologically. Narcotics dependence is a condition characterized by the urge to use narcotics continuously in increasing doses to produce the same effect and if its use is reduced and/or stopped suddenly, it can cause typical physical and psychological symptoms. The National Narcotics Agency is an institution non-ministerial government which is located under the President and is responsible viii answer to the President. National Narcotics Agency as an independent institution It is hoped that they can work better and be transparent and accountable in cracking down Narcotics crimes. It is also hoped that the National Narcotics Agency can optimize its implementation provide protection to the community and increase cooperation internationally so that transnational narcotics networks can be destroyed. In an attempt curative and rehabilitative, the government has made efforts to establish rehabilitation centers for drug victims such as RSKO in Jakarta and drug rehabilitation centers in various mental hospitals in Indonesia and rehabilitation centers. Handling victims in There are various rehabilitation centers, some use drug substitution and others without medication, some use a therapeutic community approach, approach spiritual and others. With the issuance of Law No. 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics where the law has regulated sanctions and penalties as well things permitted by the National Police in enforcing narcotics crimes. By Therefore, it is hoped that the National Police will be able to resolve cases against one or more people who commit narcotics crimes. The role and function of the National Police is very large for law enforcement in society

    Steampunk: The Inner Workings

    No full text
Steampunk, as a literary genre and cultural phenomena, is a relatively recent innovation that is increasingly receiving critical attention. From the proto-steampunk of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, through the novels of its acknowledged founding fathers K.W. Jeter, Tim Powers and James Blaylock, to contemporary works by China Miéville, Cherie Priest and Paul Di Filipo, steampunk has been plagued by the lack of a unifying definition. Every author, academic and critic has their own definition of it, which may share similarities with others, but none of them can agree on the core ingredients of the genre. Related to the important task of defining steampunk is the need to answer the question: 'Is steampunk a literary genre?' In many respects, steampunk has moved beyond the literary world. Fashion, art and sub-cultures have all embraced steampunk as a style, an aesthetic, a way of life and even a philosophy. This could be the reason for the inability to find a single unifying definition of steampunk. This thesis will argue that, rather than a genre, steampunk is best understood as an aesthetic which can be applied, like any aesthetic, to any literary genre to produce a work that is steampunk-inflected, such as science fiction steampunk, alternate history steampunk, steampunk fantasy, historical steampunk, steampunk romance or gothic steampunk. After evaluating both scholarly and popular definitions of steampunk I will explore four key aspects of the steampunk aesthetic: the neo-Victorian tropes which dominate steampunk texts; the relationship between magic and science in the steampunk universe; the places and people who inhabit steampunk worlds; and the revolutionary message of most steampunk creations. Throughout my discussion will focus primarily on a range of texts acknowledged as steampunk: Michael Moorcock’s The Warlord of the Air (1971), K. W. Jeter’s Infernal Devices (1987), Tim Powers’ The Anubis Gates (1983), William Gibson and Bruce Sterling’s The Difference Engine (1991), Paul Di Filippo’s The Steampunk Trilogy (1995), Neal Stephenson’s The Diamond Age (1995), Gail Carriger’s ‘Parasol Protectorate’ series (2009 – current), Mark Hodder’s ‘Burton and Swinburne’ series (2010 – current), Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura by Troika Games and Runic Games’ Torchlight (2009) and Torchlight 2 (2011)

J18: movements towards an ethico-aesthetic paradigm

    No full text
This thesis offers a materialist account of political action from the perspective of the aesthetic, focusing on a global day of action, protest and carnival staged to coincide with the G8 Summit on June 18th 1999. An event known as J18. Part One begins with a review of contemporary literature concerning the sociologies of contemporary political movements, theories of space and locality provided by geography, analyses of public interventions by art practice as well as the tactical deployment of media and writing related specifically to the cultural politics of anti-capitalism. The theory and methods chapter surveys historic shifts in thinking about political action, through an attendant Marxist epistemology, through three key events: the Paris Commune, the Russian Revolution and May 1968. The search for a materialist understanding of political action feeds the act of drawing together empirical material from J18 by way of the data gathering process and the reciprocal development of a critical framework used as a method of interpretation. In Part Two a multi-centred account of the event is narrated by way of micro-examples that are each affectively attuned to, and constitutive of the events happening

Oral presentation: 'Influences on uptake and engagement with health and wellbeing smartphone apps.':Centre of Behaviour Change Digital Health Conference.

    No full text
Rationale: Digital behaviour change interventions, such as smartphone apps, could provide an effective and cost-effective way to improve and maintain good physical and mental health. However, the public health impact of health and wellbeing digital interventions is dependent on sufficient real-world uptake and engagement. Uptake is currently dependent largely on popularity indicators (e.g. ranking and user ratings on app stores), which emerging evidence suggests may be negatively associated with evidence-based content. Furthermore, rapid discontinuation of use is very common. Therefore, there is an urgent need to identify factors that influence the uptake and engagement with health and wellbeing apps to inform new approaches to promoting the use of effective digital behaviour change interventions. Aims: To synthesise what is known about influences on uptake and engagement with health and wellbeing smartphone apps amongst adults. Methodology: A systematic review including quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods studies focused on health and wellbeing smartphone apps reporting on uptake and engagement behaviour among adults. Studies identified through a systematic search in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsychINFO, Scopus, Cochrane library databases, DBLP and ACM Digital library are being screened independently by two authors. Disagreement will be resolved through discussion with a third reviewer. Data extraction will be completed by the first author and checked for accuracy by another author and will include: characteristics of the studies and the sample, study design and methods used, objectives, outcomes measured, or topics covered, findings and quality appraisal. A narrative synthesis of the findings will be structured on the components of the COM-B behaviour change model, a framework that will help to understand the behaviour related to uptake and engagement of health and wellbeing smartphone apps. Analysis/results: The screening process is currently underway and key findings will be presented at the conference. Conclusions: The findings of this review will provide a framework of factors that affect uptake and engagement with health and wellbeing smartphone apps. This review will inform future research as well as stakeholders in public health and policymakers, digital behaviour change intervention developers and providers on optimisation of health and wellbeing smartphone app uptake and engagement
