Alphonse Esquiros and his "Magician" : an unknown author, an ignored book, some characters

    No full text
In her article about Alphonse Esquiros and his unique novel "Le Magicien" (1838), "a Romantic text with all the strengths and all the weaknesses" of this literary current, the author discusses Romantic avatars of a Renaissance alchimist (magician-scholar-artist): Stell, a young sculptor and Ab Hakek, an old alchimist of queen Catherine de' Medici, who coincide in their search of the Absolute and the Art, "this philosophical stone of the 19th century". The autor insists on the role played by the Imaginary in the mediatisation of the characters, especially the collective ones, like the Parisian crowd showed across an aquatic image: an immense vogue

Having translated to Portuguese almost thirty Alphonse Allais’ French chronicles/short-stories, taken from different book collections of the author, I present a brief overview of his texts and some of his discursive strategies on producing comic effects; afterwards, I argue some aporias when translating certain passages, as well as some solutions I do believe suitable in Portuguese

Palavras-chave: José de Alencar; Alphonse de Lamartine; solidariedadeAbstract: The article discusses the relationship between José de Alencar and Alphonse de Lamartine as a result of the Diário do Rio de Janeiro campaign, then directed by the future novelist, for Brazilian readers to subscribe to the Family Literature Course by the French author, who, in old age, was going through financial difficulties. This campaign, led by Alencar, got 3000 subscribers to Lamartine’s work. Catalytic coatings on stainless steel prepared by sol–gel route

    No full text
Stainless steel (flat and microstructured) substrates have been coated with sol–gel catalysts made up of metal nanoparticles (Rh, Ni, Pt) dispersed on alumina and alumina–ceria supports. The aluminum monohydroxyde (boehmite) sols were synthesized by hot hydrolysis/peptization of an aluminum alkoxide (Yoldas method). It is shown that the rheological properties of the sol, especially the thixotropy, play a key role on the homogeneity and the quality of the film deposited on the metal substrate. The catalyst layers have a very good adhesion, a thickness which can be easily controlled (in the range 0.1 to 10 μm), a large specific surface area and a good mechanical and thermal stability

Le discours mystificateur chez Alphonse Allais /

Through the use of the texts published from 1893 to 1903 by Alphonse Allais, we analyse what we call the mystifying discourse, in other words the power of fiction. We show how the author succeeds to deceive the reader. We emphasize the artificial aspects of the language and the style used by Allais to make fun of his readers. This technical study of the writing of Allais allows us to compare with other kinds of works, notably the dreamlike images and the vaudeville. We study therefore the tricks and the traps of the language employed by Allais with the aim of laughing at our expectations. From this point, we will demonstrate that, most of the time, a rupture between the conclusion and the beliefs of the readers exists regarding the fiction which is presented in the tales. Emphasizing the absurd in the texts, we accentuate the various literary techniques. As a result, we illustrate how the humour of Alphonse Allais turns out to be a technical work

Gli studi machiavelliani di Alphonse Dantier ne "Le Correspondant"

    No full text
From September 1871 to July 1873 Alphonse Dantier (1810-1882) published, for the prestigious magazine of liberal Catholic inspiration, Le Correspondant, some contributions on the history of Florence, The Medicis and Machiavelli, collected in 1874 in the second volume of his work L’Italie: études historiques for which he was awarded the prize of the Académie Française Marcelin Guérin. Dantier, although anchored to the simplified cliché of Machiavelli “negative genius”, perceived the historiographical talent of the author of Historie fiorentine and contributed to introduce the French Catholic reader to the commitment of the Republican Machiavelli in the sixteenth-century, documenting it through diplomatic dispatches, letters to the Committee of Ten and private correspondence
