Dark Matter search with bolometric detectors

In this Ph.D. work we developed a new trigger for the CUORE experiment that is sensitive to the signal shape. This trigger, based on the Optimum Filter algo- rithm, was tested on the four CUORE-like crystals of the second CUORE Crystals Validation Run (CCVR2), using a total exposure of 44 kg · d. The application to these data pushed the energy threshold from tens of keV down to the few keV region, an energy range that has never been available before in TeO2 bolometers. The detection efficiency has been evaluated by means of a dedicated run with external heaters and validated using Montecarlo, resulting in excess of 80%. We also developed a pulse shape algorithm to reject fake events induced by elec- tronics and mechanic vibrations, which populate the few keV region. Its application allows to cut a significative amount of noise events, maintaining the signal efficiency close to 100%. Analyzing the Optimum Triggered data, we observed a peak centered at about 4.7 keV in the energy spectra of the bolometers with the lowest threshold. Under the hypotesis that this line comes from the 123Te decay, we evaluated for the first time its half-life as (5.7 ± 0.6 (stat.) ± 0.6 (syst.)) · 1018 y. We also estimated a limit on Dark Matter interactions, that is similar to the one obtained in the past by MIBETA. Finally we estimated the sensitivity of CUORE and CUORE-0 to a Dark Matter modulation signal by means of toy Montecarlo, under the assumption that the background of the bolometers of these experiments will be the same of the CCVR2 ones. The resulting sensitivity plot shows that CUORE will be able to test the DAMA claim. This will be extremely important because, even if DAMA allowed region has been already excluded by several experiments, none of them was sensitive to the annual modulation effect. In this framework, CUORE could be the first experiment to look for modulation with a different experimental setup, providing a crucial cross-check of this controversial observation

Symbolic music similarity through a graph-based representation

    No full text
In this work, a novel representation system for symbolic music is described. The proposed representation system is graph-based and could theoretically represent music both from a horizontal (contrapuntal) and from a vertical (harmonic) point of view, by keeping into account contextual and harmonic information. It could also include relationships between internal variations of motifs and themes. This is achieved by gradually simplifying the melodies and generating layers of reductions that include only the most important notes from a structural and harmonic viewpoint. This representation system has been tested in a music information retrieval task, namely melodic similarity, and compared to another system that performs the same task but does not consider any contextual or harmonic information, showing how the structural information is needed in order to find certain relations between musical pieces. Moreover, a new dataset consisting of more than 5000 leadsheets is presented, with additional meta-musical information taken from different web databases, including author, year of first performance, lyrics, genre and stylistic tags

A Florentine family in crisis: the Strozzi in the fifteenth century.

PhDIn 1434 the Strozzi lineage had held a leading position in Florentine society and government for at least one hundred and fifty years, and was one of the largest and wealthiest of the city's patrician lineages. The records of the catasto of 1427 and of the scrutiny of 1433 are used to give a profile of the dominant social, economic and political position of the Strozzi before the advent of Medicean dominance. Their record of electoral success, and the political and cultural leadership of influential and respected men such as Palla di Nofri and Matteo di Simone, with other factors, put the Strozzi amongst the greatest enemies of the victorious Medicean regime of late 1434. The effects of political opposition and exile on the lineage are examined both directly, through records of office-holding, and indirectly through such indicators as marriage alliances and household wealth. The two most prominent lines of the Strozzi were exiled after 1434. Palla di Nofri's life and preoccupations in his Paduan exile are examined, together with the lives of his sons; none of these Strozzi ever returned to Florence, pursued as they were by the enmity of the Medicean regime. The very different careers of Filippo di Matteo and his brother Lorenzo are also examined: how they succeeded in founding a lucrative bank in Naples, and in returning to Florence to 'rebuild' (rifare) the position of the Strozzi lineage there. The final decades of the century saw the Strozzi in an economically more secure position, due substantially to the efforts of Filippo. Except for a very small number of its members admitted into the regime, most of the lineage is here shown to have remained excluded from significant political office until after the fall of the Medici regime in 1494

Filippo FIMIANI, Occhi pieni e mani vaganti. Movimenti, emozioni, astrazioni, «Fata Morgana», 12/2010, pp. 147-164. ISSN 1970-5786. ITALIANO. A short filmic example from the AMC's award-winning series Mad Men in which the sensorial and emotional relationship between the spectator and a moving body, i.e., a dancing body, is explicitly put into play. The essay wants to deal with the so called naturalization of phenomenology and of the living body, trained by the cognitive sciences reading the visuality. The author shows the relationship between the so called ‘embodied Simulation’ and a symbolic and iconographic deep memory of the pictures, and he gives an in-depth attention to the polarity between projections and introjections, activity and passivity of the spectator’s body during the empathic experience of the moving pictures

    Multiple political geographies

This chapter delves into the multifaceted realm of political geography within the context of the journal Political Geography. The author, who has held various editorial positions within the journal, navigates the intricate terrain of diversity and inclusion, exploring the challenges posed by linguistic and cultural biases inherent in academic publishing. The chapter critically examines efforts to mitigate barriers and broaden the scope of political geography, questioning the adequacy of current approaches. Through a reflective analysis, the author elucidates the complex dynamics of political geography as a subdiscipline, shedding light on both the impediments and possibilities it offers to researchers and students

Low Temperature Scintillation in ZnSe Crystals

    No full text
The search for new materials which could be used as scintillating bolometers is a subject of great interest in view of next-generation experiments dedicated to the study of neutrinoless double beta decay (DBD). Preliminary measurements performed on ZnSe bolometric and scintillation characteristics gave very promising results for what concerns the amplitude of the scintillation signal and the capacity to discriminate between a and particles. The current work studies the possibility to develop a scintillating ZnSe crystal adapted for the use as hybrid (thermal and scintillation) detector operating at very low temperatures (< 20 Mk), able to discriminate between a and induced events. The results of optical transmission, X-ray excited steady-state luminescence and thermo-luminescence measurements performed on ZnSe crystals produced in different conditions are presented. Based on these measurements, the scintillation properties of undoped ZnSe crystals are carefully described. The correlation between these measurements and bolometric/scintillation tests is used in order to fix the production conditions of ZnSe crystals which best guarantee scintillation efficiency at very low temperatures for possible use in a DBD experiment
