demostrada.InvestigadoresEstudiante
MAGICAL REALISM AND LATIN AMERICA BY
This work is an attempt to present a brief and simple view, both written and illustrated, concerning the controversial concept of Magical Realism for non-specialists. This study analyzes Magical Realism as a form of literary expression and artistic style by some Latin American authors and two artists. First a definition of this term is given, in addition to a definition of other, related terms. Mention is made of the origin of the term in general and a short account of the history and its use is provided. There are other, related, concepts that critics, authors and artists believe have contributed to its development. The German art critic Franz Roh is said to have been the first to use this term officially, due to the necessity of providing a suitable title for the new art form. Continuing with its development are Miguel Angel Asturias, Angel Flores, and especially Alejo Carpentier. Also included are the commentaries of Gabriel Garcia Mikquez, one of the most notable authors of Latin America identified with Magical Realism, those of the Chilean author Isabel Allende, and the commentaries of the critics Enrique Anderson, Seymour Menton, Massim
Migrações internacionais e mundos do trabalho
This dissertation investigates the international migration process and the transformations in the world of work between 1986 and 2008 so as to contribute to deepen the research on international migrations and the contemporary world of work. It focuses on Brazilian documented and non-documented immigrants who were living in Portugal or Spain in 2007 and 2008. The specific objectives of this study are (1) to investigate the history of international migrations among Brazil, Portugal, and Spain focusing on the arrival of the Portuguese and Spanish immigrants in Brazil and the context of expansion of the Brazilian migrations to Portugal and Spain; (2) to identify the narratives, memories, territories, and the everyday life of Brazilian immigrants in Portugal and Spain; (3) to uncover the new features of the immigrant work in the end of the twentieth century and beginning of the present century having as reference the work of Brazilian immigrants in areas like civil construction, cleaning, in the care of people, agriculture, and hotel management. The data analyzed in this study consist of recorded interviews in which Brazilian immigrants tell their life stories, newspaper news, official documents, pictures, statistics, among others. The main argument defended in this study is that the international migrations and the present dynamics of the world of work are not something new in the world history, but they are part of a structure that has been in existence for more than a century. However, the conjuncture of the end of the twentieth century and beginning of the present century is different, especially in aspects related to immigrant work which has been suffering direct interferences from wide changes in the productive patterns, in the technology, international flux of capital and work force. Despite the fact that the immigrants have worse working conditions, specific working areas, and get lower salaries that the national workers, they do not form an apart world of work, since they are counted as precarious workers between those who have to generate the worldwide wealth. Another argument defended in this dissertation is that in the present context the ways of living as well as the notions of family, community, profession, employment, sociability, belonging and the way the migrants deal with the past, the present, and the future are also different

There are several different ways in which the term Magical Realism has been used in Europe and especially Latin America. The use of Magical Realism as a means of artistic and literary expression continues to prevail for now, because while there exist problematic situations or changes in normal life in the countries of Latin America, there will always be inspiration for the creators and a motive to express their feelings. Its use will disappear for periods of time and will reappear at other times, as if it were manipulated by the magic of life. At the time that Magical Realism is observed, other styles will also be seen. But this is the one that many prefer and which will prevail. A large part of this project consists of the 26 works of art that are the Magical Realism interpretation by the author of this project Maria E. Rav
The virtual image : Brazilian literature in English translation
The
aim of this thesis is to
examine
how the virtual
image
of Brazil
and
its literature is
constructed
in the Anglo-American world. To this
end, a survey of
Brazilian literary
works
in English translation was
carried out.
Having
gathered this data, it became
possible to establish
correlations
between the historical
moments when such translations
were made, when their number
increased,
and the events occurring at
those times in the international
panorama, as well as to look into the
role of sponsors, publishers and translators in the
selection and
production of such translations.
The data
also allowed a profile of
Brazilian literary
works
in
English translation to be drawn. It became
possible to suggest that
such works
fall into four
main categories:
`authorial
works',
'topical
works',
`ambassadorial
works'
and `consumer-oriented
works'.
In
order
to look
more closely
into how the translation process
has helped to
shape
the
virtual
image
of Brazilian literary
works
in
the Anglo-American world, an analysis of a sample of
translations
of
such works was made. Included in this
sample were
the translations
of works
by Machado de Asis, by Indianist
and
Regionalist
wirters,
culminating
in
an examination of translations of
GuimarAes Rosa's
works.
Having looked
at these aspects of
the translation
process, what
remained
to be done
was to investigate
to what extent
Brazilian
literary
works
in English translation
are read
by the English-
speaking public.
To this
end, a survey of availability and
library
readership was undertaken. Finally,
a reading experiment was carried
out
in
which native speakers of
English
were asked to read the short
story
'A terceira
margem
do
rio',
by GuimarAes Rosa.
The
conclusion attempts to pull all these threads together and
to indicate directions for further
research
Fantasising the self: a study of Alasdair Gray's 'Lanark', '1982 Janine', 'Something Leather' and 'Poor Things'
This thesis explores the use of fantasy in Alasdair Gray's major fictions: Lanark
(1981), 1982 Janine (1984), Something Leather (1990) and Poor Things (1992).
The main purpose is to study the way Alasdair Gray borrows elements from
different forms of fantasy - magical realism, pornography, the Gothic and science
fiction - in order to explore and resolve the internal conflicts of his characters.
In the introduction current definitions of fantasy are surveyed. Also explored is
the concept of magical realism, as one of the objectives of the thesis is to
demonstrate that some of Gray's work, particularly Lanark, presents some of the
characteristics of this branch of Postmodernism.
The first chapter concerns Lanark. The juxtaposition of fantasy and
realism is explored in order to show the fragmentation of the self represented by
the figure of Thaw/Lanark. Also paradoxes and contradictions at the heart of this
work are investigated from the point of view of form and content. Of particular
importance is the conflict between the individual and society.
In the chapter dealing with 1982 Janine, the concept of deidealisation is
introduced to show how Jock deals with the figures in his past, Scotland and
himself Jock's personal conflicts and damaged psyche are explored through his
pornographic fantasies.
In chapter III Something Leather is compared to works by Sade,
particularly their use of sadomasochistic and homosexual fantasies as a form of
social subversion.
Chapter IV discusses Poor Things from the point of view of how characteristics
typical of the Gothic novel are parodied to explore gender issues such as the
construction of female identity by a male Other. Parallelisms between this novel
and Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children and John Fowles' A Maggot are also
explored.
In the conclusion the main concerns and obsessions of Gray's fiction are explored
through a discussion of his shorter fiction
This thesis tries to configure the space occupied by literature in Revista USP magazine, starting from the reflection about the art produced in the 80's and 90's. The popular music, the theater and the movies are submitted to an evaluation of their recent creations while the literature does not receive the same kind of critical approach. Investigating motivations and consequences of this attitude is the main proposition of this research, which intends to develop the following hypothesis: a great amount of texts published in Revista USP composes a mosaic, in which the reflection about Brazilian literature configures itself through the constitution of a monumental axle, formed by Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas, written by Machado de Assis and Grande sertão: veredas, by João Guimarães Rosa. These books mark and support the limits of the canon proposed by the magazine, which considers Guimarães Rosa's narrative as the last sign of creativity in Brazilian literature. Although, it's possible to perceive some shadows that disturb the clearness of this axle. The first one is Grande sertão: veredas seen as a "neobarroco" text, and the second is an anthology of Brazilian poetry published at Universidad de México magazine
Skyler and Bliss
Hong Kong remains the backdrop to the science fiction movies of my youth. The city reminds me of my former training in the financial sector. It is a city in which I could have succeeded in finance, but as far as art goes it is a young city, and I am a young artist. A frustration emerges; much like the mould, the artist also had to develop new skills by killing off his former desires and manipulating technology. My new series entitled HONG KONG surface project shows a new direction in my artistic research in which my technique becomes ever simpler, reducing the traces of pixelation until objects appear almost as they were found and photographed. Skyler and Bliss presents tectonic plates based on satellite images of the Arctic. Working in a hot and humid Hong Kong where mushrooms grow ferociously, a city artificially refrigerated by climate control, this series provides a conceptual image of a imaginary typographic map for survival. Safety of Bariatric Surgery in ≥ 65-Year-Old Patients During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Background Age >= 65 years is regarded as a relative contraindication for bariatric surgery. Advanced age is also a recognised risk factor for adverse outcomes with Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) which continues to wreak havoc on global populations. This study aimed to assess the safety of bariatric surgery (BS) in this particular age group during the COVID-19 pandemic in comparison with the younger cohort. Methods We conducted a prospective international study of patients who underwent BS between 1/05/2020 and 31/10/2020. Patients were divided into two groups - patients >= 65-years-old (Group I) and patients < 65-years-old (Group II). The two groups were compared for 30-day morbidity and mortality. Results There were 149 patients in Group 1 and 6923 patients in Group II. The mean age, preoperative weight, and BMI were 67.6 +/- 2.5 years, 119.5 +/- 24.5 kg, and 43 +/- 7 in Group I and 39.8 +/- 11.3 years, 117.7 +/- 20.4 kg, and 43.7 +/- 7 in Group II, respectively. Approximately, 95% of patients in Group 1 had at least one co-morbidity compared to 68% of patients in Group 2 (p = < 0.001). The 30-day morbidity was significantly higher in Group I ( 11.4%) compared to Group II (6.6%) (p = 0.022). However, the 30-day mortality and COVID-19 infection rates were not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusions Bariatric surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic is associated with a higher complication rate in those >= 65 years of age compared to those < 65 years old. However, the mortality and postoperative COVID-19 infection rates are not significantly different between the two groups
