The personal and national costs of lost labour force participation due to arthritis: an economic study
No full textArthritis is a common and costly health condition internationally. The direct medical costs of arthritis are significant, with the condition being the fourth most common reason for seeking general practitioner medical care. Treatment of arthritis in Australia cost around $4 billion (AU) in health system expenditure in 2004–05, the fourth largest cause of health expenditure in the country. However, this figure covers only the direct medical costs, and the indirect costs, are considered to be larger. Within Australia arthritis has been listed as a ‘National Health Priority Area’, and affects 15% of the population. By 2020 the prevalence of the condition is estimated to increase, with arthritis potentially affecting 35% of the Australian population. Arthritis can cause significant activity limitation, and is responsible for around 13% of the disability reported in Australia. Due to its impact on functional ability, arthritis is associated with decreased labour force participation rates. Within Australia the impact of arthritis on labour force participation among people in the pre-retirement age group of 45 to 64 years is significant – with people suffering from arthritis being 3 times more likely to be out of the labour force than those with no chronic health condition.Authors: Deborah J Schofield, Rupendra N Shrestha, Richard Percival, Megan E Passey, Emily J Callander and Simon J Kell

No full textA World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Special Workshop titled the “Climatic effects of ozone depletion in the Southern Hemisphere: Assessing the evidence and identifying gaps in the current knowledge” focused on the current understanding of Southern Hemisphere (SH) ozone depletion, in particular high-latitude ozone depletion, with regards to its impacts on hemispheric climate and its role relative to greenhouse gas (GHG)–induced climate changes. The 2010 United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)/World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion, and research published since, provided the starting point for discussion. Gli autori presentano in questo articolo un trentanovesimo parere, finora inedito, non datato né firmato, ritrovato tra le carte dell’Archivio Storico Civico di Milano. Non si tratta del contributo teorico di un architetto che riporta le più conosciute fonti della letteratura architettonica, o quello di un tecnico che discute i dettagli e le dimensioni della struttura del Duomo, ma di un testo, probabilmente preparato da un ecclesiastico, nel quale sono presentate precise prese di posizione su alcune scelte progettuali e dove sono citati en passant alcuni esempi di edifici di Bologna, Roma e Napoli

No full textL'attività artistica di Pietro Lombardo e dei figli Tullio e Antonio, protrattasi a Venezia per oltre cinquant'anni, è un'autentica sfida filologica per gli studiosi. Le tante sculture eseguite - rilievi, statue, tombe ducali - e le importanti architetture realizzate o soltanto progettate - cappelle, chiese, palazzi - formano un catalogo di opere quanto mai vasto ed eterogeneo. E' difficile pensare che in qualsiasi edificio di una certa importanza realizzato a Venezia tra Quattro e Cinquecento non sia stata coinvolta la bottega, non foss'altro come impresa specializzata nella fornitura di materiali lapidei. Questa ininterrotta e ramificata attività artistica e professionale comporta l'oggettiva difficoltà di delineare un quadro unitario dell'opera dei Lombardo, e giustifica l'assenza, a tutt'oggi , di una monografia a essi dedicata. I consueti strumenti storiografici e narrativi sembranoi infatti infrangersi contro tale ricchezza di dati, e non è forse casuale che a distanza di oltre un secolo resti ancora indispensabile quello straordinario, e per certi versi inestricabile, mosaico critico-documentario rappresentato da L'architettura e la scultura del Rinascimento in Venezia di Pietro Paoletti (1893-1897).
Con questo libro si tenta di scalfire l'omogeneità di quella massa imponente di informazioni. Per articolare un discorso sui Lombardo è sembrato indispensabile riunire e mettere a confronto fra loro, e per la prima volta su questo tema, specialisti italiani e stranieri, diversi per formazione e orientamento metodologico. E' una scelta che si inserisce nel solco di una pluridecennale tradizione di studi del Dipartimento di Storia dell'Architettura dell'Università IUAV di Venezia, i cui convegni sono sempre stati dettati dall'urgenza scientifica di un problema storiografico, a prescindere da ricorrenze o centenari.
I saggi qui raccolti iniziano dunque a colmare una vistosa lacuna negli studi sull'arte e l'architettura veneziane tra Quattro e Cinquecento, indagando la nascita e lo sviluppo di un nuovo linguaggio artistico in città e nel Dominio: dalla diffusione nel secondo Quattrocento, ad opera soprattutto del capostipite Pietro, di modelli antichizzanti ancora intrecciati a tradizioni figurative e iconografiche medievali (si vedano i saggi di Richard Schofield, Cristiano Tessari, Laura Corti), alla affermazione di un gusto esplicitamente romano e antico, come emrge nelle opere dei figli tullio e Antonio (saggio di Charles Hope). In questa evoluzione risalta l'inedito apportato dato dalle illustrazioni a stampa prodotte dalla nuova industria tipografica veneziana (si veda il saggio di Alison Luchs)
