Estimation of the total error of modal wavefront reconstruction with Zernike polynomials and Hartmann-Shack test

    No full text
The paper discusses the influence of the Hartmann-(Shack) wavefront sensor geometry on the total error of modal wavefront reconstruction. A mathematical model is proposed which describes modal wavefront reconstruction based on Hartmann or Hartmann-Shack sensor in terms of linear operators. The modal covers the most general case and is not limited by the orthogonality of decomposition basis or by the method chosen for decomposition. The total reconstruction error is calculated for any given statistics of the wavefront to be measured. Based on this estimate, total reconstruction error is calculated for regular and randomised Hartmann masks. The calculations demonstrate that use of random masks with non-regular Fourier spectra for Zernike wavefront reconstruction for atmospheric turbulence allows to double the number of decomposition modes with the same total error.Electronic InstrumentationElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in a Hartmann duct flow at finite magnetic Reynolds number

    No full text
The dynamics of turbulent flow at finite magnetic Reynolds numbers can be very complex due to the coupled nature of the evolution equations for the flow and magnetic fields. In this regime, the Hartmann flow in a straight rectangular duct with streamwise periodicity is studied with the help of direct numerical simulations (DNS) and the effect of magnetic Reynolds number on turbulent statistics is quantified by comparing the results with the numerical results obtained using the quasistatic approximation

Causality of cortical and cardiovascular activity during cyclic alternating pattern in non-rapid eye movement sleep

The dynamic interplay between central and autonomic nervous system activities plays a pivotal role in orchestrating sleep. Macrostructural changes such as sleep-stage transitions or phasic, brief cortical events elicit fluctuations in neural outflow to the cardiovascular system, but the causal relationships between cortical and cardiovascular activities underpinning the microstructure of sleep are largely unknown. Here, we investigate cortical–cardiovascular interactions during the cyclic alternating pattern (CAP) of non-rapid eye movement sleep in a diverse set of overnight polysomnograms. We determine the Granger causality in both 507 CAP and 507 matched non-CAP sequences to assess the causal relationships between electroencephalography (EEG) frequency bands and respiratory and cardiovascular variables (heart period, respiratory period, pulse arrival time and pulse wave amplitude) during CAP. We observe a significantly stronger influence of delta activity on vascular variables during CAP sequences where slow, low-amplitude EEG activation phases (A1) dominate than during non-CAP sequences. We also show that rapid, high-amplitude EEG activation phases (A3) provoke a more pronounced change in autonomic activity than A1 and A2 phases. Our analysis provides the first evidence on the causal interplay between cortical and cardiovascular activities during CAP. Granger causality analysis may also be useful for probing the level of decoupling in sleep disorders.Simon Hartmann, Raffaele Ferri, Oliviero Bruni and Mathias Baumer

    Focus and tone

    No full text
Tone is a distinctive feature of the lexemes in tone languages. The information-structural category focus is usually marked by syntactic and morphological means in these languages, but sometimes also by intonation strategies. In intonation languages, focus is marked by pitch movements, which are also perceived as tone. The present article discusses prosodic focus marking in these two language types

    HARTMANN, NIETZSCHE E O ANTICRISTO

In this article we will raise the hypothesis that the bookThe Antichrist, written by Nietzsche in 1888, can be understood as anironic fulfillment of the “prophecy” of Eduard von Hartmann, in hisbook Philosophy of the unconscious (1869), about a secular era ofhumanity where Christianity would be no more than a shadow. Toarrive at this statement, it is first necessary to go back to Hartmann'sPhilosophy of the Unconscious and the way in which the termAntichrist is used by him. Later, it should be noted how Nietzschehimself read and quoted it in his writing On the usefulness anddisadvantage of history for life (1873) and in his other writings, untilfinally his book entitled The Antichrist. As we have suggested, thename "Antichrist" was therefore appropriate to title the book thatbrought the transvaluation of all Christian values with whichNietzsche believed to launch a deadly attack on Christianity and thusenable the conditions for a cultural renewal in which the values ofChristendom were, in fact, surpassed.
