Definitions of "Chord" in the Teaching of Tonal Harmony
In North America, there has been a growing tendency in recent years to include pop-rock examples in undergraduate tonal-harmony classes. Yet by incorporating pop-rock music into the classical harmony classroom, teachers come face to face with some of the fundamental differences between the harmonic idioms of these two styles. Assuming we continue to incorporate pop-rock music in the classical harmony classroom and do not give it its own separate course, the question becomes whether we should use pop-rock excerpts only to the extent that they can serve as illustrations of classical idioms, or instead engage pop-rock music on its own terms. If we choose the latter option, and endeavor to move beyond a treatment of pop-rock music that is somewhat tokenistic (if well-intentioned), we must then also decide whether those pop-rock-music ‘terms’ be defined in ways classical musicians would define them (etic-ally), or in ways pop-rock musicians would define them (emic-ally).Peer reviewe
Transformation in Rock Harmony: An Explanatory Strategy
Musical transformation is an extremely broad, abstract explanatory concept, capable of covering not just instances of radical conversion but, in fact, all degrees of musical change. When it comes to rock, transformations are among the most powerful and talked-about musical effects. Many of these effects are harmonic, and this article seeks to give voice to a number of these. To this end, I will present several musical examples from the rock repertoire that will help clarify some common kinds of harmonic transformations, as well as some common kinds of harmonic structures involved in such transformations.Peer reviewe

The goal of this paper is to contribute to conceptual issues associated with the construct of everyday competence. After the description of reasons for the increased attention which everyday competence has found within gerontology, the first section of this work serves to shed light on six research traditions with relevance for everyday competence: (1) Research on everyday cognitive processes, (2) ADL/IADL research, (3) leisure time research, (4) coping research, (5) time budget research, and (6) ecological gerontology research. In the second section, two influencial models of everyday competence, namely those of Margret Baltes and Sherry Willis, are discussed. Finally, an integrative conception of everyday competence, which is aimed to combine aspects of the six research traditions with elements of the two models of everyday competence, is suggested

The present thesis is focused on the educational role of Social Movements in the lives of senior peasants concerning peasantry, aging and loan consignment studies. The specific objectives of this study are: understanding how loan consignment relates to the lives of elderly peasants engaged in Social Movements; describing the characteristics of peasant aging, based on bibliographic review, interviews, and participatory observation during the research; identifying the importance of Social Movements in relation to strategies on financial education as well as peasantry and aging through elderly and local leaderships perspectives. Participatory research was carried out with 19 elderly individuals from the following cities: Sagrada Família, Lajeado do Bugre, Ibirubá and Selbach, in Rio Grande do Sul. In addition to the work with peasants, three (03) local leaders from the Movement of Peasant Women (Movimento de Mulheres Camponesas) and from the Small Farmers' Movement (Movimento dos Pequenos Agricultores) were interviewed. The interviews were carried out with people between the ages of 58 and 85 - 15 (fifteen) women and 04 (four) men. Only one of the elderly subjects interviewed had not been engaged in any of the activities of the Social Movements cited. However, this person was acquainted with them and recognized their importance for the subjects of the field. In order to achieve the purpose of this work, a deeper comprehension of peasantry, aging, loan consignment (which is only one of the actions concerning an individual’s financial life) as well as of social movements were aimed in this study aimed This perspective brought about an intertwinement of subjects which had been under approached when thought of in their articulated form. From the results found in the present study, we can infer that besides building up a theoretical construction on peasantry, aging and loan consignment, the perception of the interviewed individuals on such subjects was able empower them, providing those who have experienced these issues throughout their daily lives with voice and visibility. Regarding the educational role of the Social Movements, we realize how much the action of engaging on a movement changes people and that they learn and collectively begin to give their knowledge and practices a different meaning. The main theoretical references used for the peasantry were: Wanderley (2009); Ploeg (2008); Carvalho (2005); Cardoso (1987); Via Campesina (2013); Chayanov (2016); Shanin (1980); Ploeg (2016); Conte (2014). In order to theoretically discuss the aging process Netto (2002); Camarano and Pasinato (2006); IBGE; Silva (2008); Debert (1999/1996); Gorz (2009); Doll (2012); Minayo (2003) were used. Regarding the aging field: Wanderley and Favareto (2013); Camarano and Abramovay (2009); Morais, Rodrigues and Gerhardt (2008). In order to deepen the comprehension on loan consignment, Doll and Cavallazzi (2016) were mentioned; Bauman (2008); Palaces (2008); SPC (2014). Finally, regarding Social Movements, Rinco and Domingues (2012), contributed to the theoretical deepening
Conceptual design of an anthropomorphic shake doll: Development of requirements for an anthropomorphic shake doll and design of an artificial joint for investigating the infant’s body kinematics during shaking.
Infant shaking can cause serious damage (inflicted head injury by shaking trauma), it’s occurrence indicates the necessity for infant protection. To ensure reliable jurisprudence, it is important to know the exact consequences of shaking on an infant’s body. These consequences can be researched by the use of an anthropomorphic shake doll. With this doll, shake experiments can be performed in order to better understand the kinematics of the body and body parts during shaking. This study aims to establish design criteria for this doll as well as designing, producing and testing the joints for this model. A requirement list is presented, as well as a design for a joint that can be used for the limbs of the doll. To ensure structural integrity of this design, a representation of the joint was created and an indicative mechanical shake test was performed. Building further on this, real life prototypes have been made.Biomedical Engineerin
