Captain McVay, who committed suicide in 1968, was posthumously exonerated by Congress in 2001. The survivors hold regular reunions and established the memorial located on the canal in downtown Indianapolis. Descendants and supporters belong to the group “USS Indianapolis (CA35) Second Watch,” that works to preserve the ship’s story

At the ship’s launching party Lucy Taggart, daughter of a former mayor of Indianapolis, christened the ship’s bow with a bottle containing waters from the White River and Fall Creek, both of which flow through the city. In December 1932 she and then Mayor Reginald Sullivan presented the silver service from the battleship USS “Indiana” to the “Indianapolis.” The “Indiana” had seen action in the Spanish- American War and was decommissioned in 1919
