    Soil quality of a cropland and adjacent natural grassland in an arid region

    Maintaining and improving the quality of soils are vital to provide the food and fiber demands of increasing human population and support the sustainability of the ecosystem services. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of land use change on soil quality and related functions of natural grassland and adjacent cropland which has been used as grassland till 2008. Rotation of forage crops including rye, triticale, barley and second crop silage corn has been applied in the cropland after the conversion from rangeland. Manure (50 ton ha-1) was applied to all croplands at the beginning of the crop production. A total of 200 surface soil samples (0-20 cm) were collected in June 2012, 68 of which were from cropland and 132 from natural grassland. Soil samples were analyzed for bulk density, aggregate stability, available water content, water-filled pore space, total organic carbon, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), sodium adsorption ratio, plant available phosphorus and extractable potassium concentrations to determine the soil quality index using Soil Management Assessment Framework method. Nutrient cycle, water relations, physical stability and support, filtration and storage, and resilience and resistance sub-functions were examined under the soil quality. Indicators defining the soil functions were determined using expert opinion and principal component analysis (PCA), and weights for each indicator were assigned by using simple additive and weighted additive methods. The aggregate stability included in the data set with the expert opinion was removed from the data set by the PCA approach. Total organic carbon, sodium adsorption ratio and EC were the most frequently used indicators to define soil functions in the study area. Soil quality assessment determined by PCA and expert opinion methods produced significantly different results. The mean sodium adsorption ratio values of cropland and natural grassland were 4.30 and 7.19, and the EC values were 2.48 and 3.66 dS m-1, respectively. High sodium adsorption ratio decreased the soil quality in both lands. In addition, lower total organic carbon and higher EC values in natural grassland were other causes of low soil quality. Manure addition, crop rotation and irrigation in cropland increased the total organic carbon and decreased the sodium adsorption ratio and EC values compared to the natural grassland. Therefore, contrary to the expectations that converting rangelands into the croplands leads to negative changes in soil functions, conversion of natural grassland to cropland in study area, improved the soil quality. The simplicity and quantitative flexibility of soil management assessment framework allowed to compare and assess the effects of rangeland conversion into cropland. © 2020 Earth and Environmental Team, Romania

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    TAKDİM İlahiyat fakültelerinde felsefe eğitimi ve İslâm felsefesi dersi öğrencilerimizin düşünce dünyasına çok önemli katkılar sunmakta, kavramsal açıdan onların gelişimini sağlamaktadır. İslâm felsefesi disip lininin anlam ve önemine işaret ederken evvelemirde şu gerçeğin altını çizmemiz gereklidir: İslâmî ilimler içerisinde bugünkü haliyle geçmişten ve gelenekten beslenerek oluşmuş olan disiplinlerin hiçbiri birbirinin al ternatifi değildir. Her biri İslâm felsefesi gibi kendi hususi kıymetini ha izdir. Mezkûr klasik İslâmî ilimler bir bütün olarak İslâm düşüncesinin oluşmasına, gelişmesine ve sürdürülmesine hep birlikte omuz vermişler, yardımcı olmuşlardır. Takdir edilecektir ki, her ilmin ağırlığının birbi rinin aynı olması ve birinin diğerinin işlevini görmesi mümkün ve ma kul değildir. Bu vesileyle vurgulamamız gerekir ki, İslâm medeniyetinin doğuşuna, gelişimine katkı veren ilimlerden birinin bile ihmali, düşünce dünyamızı aksak kılacak, düşüncelerimizi radikalleştirecek, belki de te davisi uzun süreler alacak onulmaz yaralar açacaktır. İslâm felsefesi disiplini, İslâm düşünce birikiminin önemli sacayaklarından biridir. Zaman zaman bazıları tarafından iddia edildiği gibi kıyıda köşede kalmış, marjinal bir saha değil, İslâm düşüncesini ta mamlayan, oluşmasına ve gelişmesine katkıda bulunan köklü unsurlar dan biridir. Bu itibarla klasik dönemden bu yana felsefe “hikmet” olarak isimlendirilmiştir. İslâm düşünce tarihinin ve İslâm medeniyetinin serü venine baktığımız zaman genelde felsefe, özelde İslâm felsefesi ve filozof larının yapmış olduğu katkıları bariz bir şekilde görmek mümkündür. İslâm Felsefesi Anabilim Dalı Koordinasyon Toplantısı’nda sunulan ve elinizdeki kitapta derlenen tebliğ ve müzakereler İslâm felsefesinin anlamına, yerine ve gelecekte inşa edilecek olan Müslüman düşüncesi nin şekillenmesine mütevazı bir katkıda bulunacaktır. Eğer bugün çağdaş İslâm düşüncesinden bahsedemiyorsak veya bahsederken içimiz rahat değilse, bunun sebebi, geçmişte inşa edilen felsefe geleneği dâhil olmak üzere var olan birikimlerimizden habersiz oluşumuz veya bunlara karşı olumsuz yaklaşımlar sergiliyor oluşumuzdur. İslâm düşünce geleneğin de bulunan birikimlerin ihmal edilmesi, geleceği inşa etmek için yapıla cak bütün çalışmaları akamete uğratacaktır. Müslümanların onurlu ve nitelikli bir gelecek inşa etmesinin yolu, İslâm kültür ve medeniyetinin ihyasından geçmektedir. Bu ihya ise öncelikle kadîm geleneğin keşfi ve tahkikiyle gerçekleşecektir. Bu kitabın sözünü ettiğimiz hususlarda yeniden düşünmemizi sağ layacağını umuyorum.     Simulation of thermal plant optimization and hydraulic aspects of thermal distribution loops for large campuses

    Following an introduction, the author describes Texas A&M University and its utilities system. After that, the author presents how to construct simulation models for chilled water and heating hot water distribution systems. The simulation model was used in a $2.3 million Ross Street chilled water pipe replacement project at Texas A&M University. A second project conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio was used as an example to demonstrate how to identify and design an optimal distribution system by using a simulation model. The author found that the minor losses of these closed loop thermal distribution systems are significantly higher than potable water distribution systems. In the second part of the report, the author presents the latest development of software called the Plant Optimization Program, which can simulate cogeneration plant operation, estimate its operation cost and provide optimized operation suggestions. The author also developed detailed simulation models for a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator and identified significant potential savings. Finally, the author also used a steam turbine as an example to present a multi-regression method on constructing simulation models by using basic statistics and optimization algorithms. This report presents a survey of the author??s working experience at the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Texas A&M University during the period of January 2002 through March 2004. The purpose of the above work was to allow the author to become familiar with the practice of engineering. The result is that the author knows how to complete a project from start to finish and understands how both technical and nontechnical aspects of a project need to be considered in order to ensure a quality deliverable and bring a project to successful completion. This report concludes that the objectives of the internship were successfully accomplished and that the requirements for the degree of Degree of Engineering have been satisfied

    Multi-objective optimization of parameters affecting the performance of parabolic solar collectors by taguchi, anova, and grey relational analysis method

    In this study, a combined simulation-optimization study was carried out on parabolic solar collectors. The parameters of energy and exergy efficiencies of parabolic solar collectors examined theoretically were optimized by the grey relational analysis method. A simulation model was developed to determine the performance of parabolic solar collectors. The results obtained from this model were shown to be in good agreement with the previous results in the literature. Four parameters such as wind speed, fluid flow rate, solar radiation value, and fluid inlet temperature were selected for statistical analysis. A statistical analysis was carried out to observe the effect of these parameters on the first- and second-law efficiencies of the collectors. Optimum values and contribution rates of the parameters were determined due to statistical analysis and optimization. As a result, the optimum conditions were obtained, i.e., wind speed value of 5 m/s, flow rate of 100 L/min, solar radiation value of 1000 W/m(2), and fluid inlet temperature value of 400 K. Under these conditions, energy and exergy efficiencies were found to be 73.34% and 20.53%, respectively. As a result of the statistical analysis, it was seen that the fluid inlet temperature was the most effective parameter with 72.81%. In addition, the effect rate of solar radiation value was 15.59%, the effect rate of fluid flow rate was 10.01%, and the effect rate of wind speed, which was the parameter with the lowest effect, was found to be 0.24%

    Investigation of the cooling effect of wind on rooftop PV power plants

    This study investigates the cooling of PV panels installed on the roof of a 5.9 MW power plant in Bursa, Turkey, under varying wind conditions. Meteorological measurements were conducted during the summer period to analyse the cooling effects. When wind speed differences were below 0.5 m/s, the cooling effect on the PV panels ranged between 2 and 3 °C. However, when the wind speed differences approached 1 m/s, the cooling effect increased up to 7 °C. At lower wind speeds, winds blowing from behind the panels provided better cooling, whereas side winds offered improved performance as wind speed increased. Due to the roof slope and the minimal gap between the panels and the roof, winds from behind were less effective, as they could not penetrate the back of the PV panels. Side winds, on the other hand, faced no difficulty in flowing over the panel surfaces but lost their cooling effect as they passed along the long rows of panels. These findings suggest that during the design phase of PV power plants, high wind speed locations should be prioritized, and optimal configurations should be implemented to ensure uniform wind access to all PV arrays
