The yagé aesthetic of William Burroughs: the publication and development of his work 1953-1965
PhDMy concern in this thesis is to show that a reconstruction of the publishing history of
the work of William Burroughs offers a new, critical perspective on his experiments
with psychoactive substances and their connection to his developing practice.
I begin with an exploration of the publication of The Yage Letters (1963) and Naked
Lunch (1959), and reveal how the complexities of their publishing histories shaped
their critical reception. I examine the legal defence of Naked Lunch as it developed
from the Big Table Post Office hearing through to the 1965 Boston trial and
demonstrate the degree to which censorship came to define the published text. The
legal defence of Naked Lunch, as it was incorporated into the Grove publication,
emphasised the issue of opiate addiction. The way in which Burroughs’ 1953 letters to
Allen Ginsberg were reworked as The Yage Letters did much to conceal the
significance of yagé for Burroughs’ later work. Together, these publishing histories
have obscured the relationship between his use of psychoactive substances and his
evolving aesthetic.
At the same time many of Burroughs’ most experimental - and important - works
appeared only in small, ephemeral magazines. His adoption of avant-garde strategies
such as collaboration and collage and his dedication to multimedia experimentation
with the non-chemical alteration of consciousness made conventional book
publication problematic or unsuitable. These experiments in aesthetic production, I
argue, are central to our understanding of Burroughs. His main published writings
must be re-evaluated as one element in this collage of multimedia activities.

I argue that Burroughs’ experiences with yagé, mescaline and dimethyltryptamine
exerted an influence on his shift to experimentalism in the early 1960s, which sought
to replicate the experience of these altered states of consciousness. That this is so is
evident from a study of two collections of correspondence - Burroughs’ letters to
Ginsberg held at Columbia University Library and his letters to Brion Gysin in the
William S. Burroughs Papers held at the New York Public Library. My reading of
these letters forms an important component of my argument, working to reveal what
the conventional ‘published’ Burroughs serves to conceal.Arts and Humanities research Board.

The Federal school-lunch program in Cameron County, Texas
The study of the school-lunch program being provided by Federal funds in the schools of Cameron County was first suggested to the author as a result of observation of many children in his own school who came all day without lunch. This condition led to the investigation of the operation of such program, which culminated in its being installed in that school in the beginning of the school year 1940-1941

It\ue2s everyone\ue2s dream to have their own career in their life, such as running a restaurant or a store. Although the economy has been depressed for a long time, there are more and more restaurants in Taiwan. Running a lunch-box store is one of the options when people want to have their own stores.
Some people successed and had the chain lunch-box stores, even planned to enter China market. Some failed in running their stores and left the market. This research would focus on the operation of the lunch-box store to find what to do to make the store better operated
Lunch and selectivity in memory and attention
Background: Research in industrial settings and in the laboratory suggests that performance declines in the post-lunch period. Some evidence suggests that this post-lunch dip is due to the consumption of a meal, whereas other studies show that it reflects endogenous rhythms. The post-lunch dip is modified by factors such as personality, gender, meal type, and the nature of the task carried out. The present study examined whether the performance of tasks involving selectivity in memory and attention is impaired in the afternoon and whether this depends on consuming lunch. Method: A parallel-group design was used. One hundred and twenty university students (50% male) participated in the study. Baseline measurements were taken between 9.30 and 11.30 am. Volunteers were then assigned to one of five groups: (1) Pre-lunch testing, (2) Early afternoon post-lunch testing, (3) Early afternoon post- no lunch testing, (4) Late afternoon post-lunch testing, and (5) Late afternoon post- no lunch testing. In each session, cardiovascular measures were taken, mood was rated before and after the performance tests and tests measuring selectivity in memory and attention were carried out. Results: Heart rate was significantly higher after the consumption of lunch. At the start of the test session, mood ratings were less positive in the early afternoon if lunch was missed. At the end of the test session, consumption of lunch led to a more negative mood in the late afternoon, whereas those who fasted had a more negative mood in the early afternoon. None of the tasks measuring selectivity in memory and attention showed significant differences between the late morning and early afternoon. Similarly, the performance of these tasks showed no differences between lunch and no lunch conditions. Conclusion: The present study showed little evidence of performance of selective attention and memory tasks varying as a function of time of day or consumption of lunch. In contrast, pulse rate was influenced by lunch, and hedonic tone varied with the time of day, a finding that depended on when mood was measured and whether lunch had been consumed
Interrelation between the Author and the Text in W. S. Burroughs’s Naked Lunch and Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club
Article adopts Jacques Lacan’s concept of the “mirror stage” to study the mechanisms of the way the Author’s identity evolves in W. Burroughs’s Naked Lunch and Ch. Palahniuk’s Fight Club. Evolution of the Author is set against general process of personal growth. The study is primarily concerned with features of the Author’s evolution within transgressive fiction, as Chuck Palahniuk and William Burroughs are the key figures of this genre. Transgression presupposes addressing social taboos by explicating them, thus creating strong reactions within the readership. We argue and find evidence that Burroughs and Palahniuk in the process of facing their perfect images of the Author digress from what Lacan would consider normal development. When they are given a chance to produce a unified body of text, the writers chose unconscious strive for fragmentation instead. Fragmented images invade Naked Lunch and Fight Club. However the mirror stage in the case of Palahniuk and in the case of Burroughs differ. While Burroughs in the myth of the Interzone ends up rejecting the notion of unique Author as such, Palahniuk accepts the fact that he managed to form a new niche for transgressive fiction and stays true to this niche, continuing similar aesthetics in the works that follow
Narkotykowy lunch. Prolegomena do filmografii nieznanej Williama S. Burroughsa
A DRUG LUNCH. INTRODUCTION TO THE UNKNOWN FILMOGRAPHY OF WILLIAM S. BURROUGHSThe article concentrates on the connections between cinema and William S. Burroughs, an American novelist. As the author of a legendary Naked Lunch, Burroughs had an opportunity to work with a painter Brion Gysin and underground filmmaker Antony Balch. In the 1960s they made several avant-garde films in which they used the so-called “cut-up” method which was invented by Gysin at the beginning of the decade. The author refers to films and juxtaposes them with the American avant-garde cinema of the 1960s. He concentrates also on other film projects, which Burroughs participated in and had an impact on. As a complement to those analyses, the author outlines a historical background of Burroughs’s works. He emphasizes the signifi cance of other films — such as Conrad Rooks’s Chappaqua 1966, Muscha’s Decoder 1984, Gus Van Sant’s Drugstore Cowboy 1989 and more — in which Burroughs either starred and/or could be seen as a main inspiration to, due to his controversial biography of a non-stop drug addict and constant freedom defender. Many directors refer to Burroughs because of his relevance: his novels and public comments are connected with themes that are artistically interesting for filmmakers. The author sees Burroughs’s film work as an extension of his literature achievements; as an attempt at an ambitious search for the new language of art that could express the American writer’s method as significantly as possible.Translated by Paweł BilińskiA DRUG LUNCH. Does education improve health? A reexamination of the evidence from compulsory schooling laws
This article analyzes the impact of compulsory schooling laws early in the twentieth century on long-term health. The author finds no compelling evidence for a causal link between education and health using this research design. Further, the results suggest that only a small fraction of health conditions are affected by education, and several of those are conditions, such as sight and hearing, where economic theories don’t appear to be relevant.Education - Economic aspects ; Health
Students’ Satisfaction with University Lunch Quality: Case Fox Mamselli Restaurant at KAMK
The purpose of this thesis is to measure the students’ satisfaction with university lunch service, at the same time, to identify the international perspectives and suggest new strategies for the upcoming renovation. The research was conducted for the sake of both students and university’s restaurant itself, specifically, not only help them have a higher quality university lunch but also provide Fox Mamselli restaurant with the students’ expectations and develop ideas for a new canteen in the future.
Different concepts of customer satisfaction, customer expectation and measurements are discussed in the theoretical part. This section explains the customer perceptions as well as the correlation between customer satisfaction and six-core determinants based on the conceptual model of (Wilson, et al., 2012). The researcher applied the SERVQUAL model in evaluating service quality and its linkage with the satisfaction level. Essentially, the information of university lunch served by the institutions of higher education in Finland is introduced, followed by multi-cultural views of Finnish cuisine and Finnish school meal obtained in initial studies.
The author utilized two research methods, i.e. qualitative and quantitative methods to solve the research problems. An online survey was conducted with 117 participants, including both Finnish and foreign students at KAMK. A semi-structured interview with a representative of Fox Mamselli was then implemented via email to conclude in renovation strategies, which solve the remaining issues and expectations raised in the survey results.
The study outcome illustrates that lunch price and service quality were both hit the highest satisfaction level. The school meal offered by Fox brings a positive image of Finnish cuisine to international customers as well. Nevertheless, menu selection and food quality should be prioritized to improve in the next renovation. Kajaani Mamselli has proposed applicable solutions for the lunch variety and international development such as organizing theme weeks and tasting afternoons. The canteen premise will be upgraded with expanded spaces and other amenities. Extra services added to the Fox lunch are taken into consideration with appropriate price adjustment
