Diasporic narratives and migrant memories in 'The Teak Almirah' by Indian Jewish author Jael Silliman

    No full text
Diasporic literature posits itself as a space of vision in which to prompt ruptures, go beyond prescriptive and proscriptive limits, and imagine new ways to identify and belong (Parmar 2016). This is what makes the novels by Jael Silliman worth reading and apprehending in the contested and complex scenario of contemporary Indian literatures in English, further allowing an analysis of the role of English in constructing historically complex communities of readers in a transnational and transcultural perspective. At the crossroads of literature, anthropology and history, Silliman’s novel The Teak Almirah (2016) evokes times and places of colonial India, re-casting them in a new performance where both the characters and the readers are compelled to follow the shadows, the rumours, the hints and the traces that are defined an emotional geography and a “cartography of diaspora” (Brah 1996)

    Special issue on Terra Matta

In 2007 Einaudi published a book entitled Terra matta, by an unknown Sicilian author, Vincenzo Rabito, which would rapidly become a bestseller. In 2012 a film derived from the book, Terramatta; Il Novecento italiano di Vincenzo Rabito analfabeta siciliano, was presented at the Venice Film Festival to great acclaim. In introducing our analyses of that cultural phenomenon, I describe the nature of the typescript and set it in the context of other writings by Italy's diversamente colti. I chart the passage from typescript to book to film and outline the interventions – explored in detail by the protagonists in the contributions that follow – shaping its successive incarnations

Serving temperature viscosity measurements of nectar and honey-thick liquids

    No full text
This study reports the viscosity (thickness) of nectar- and honey-thick liquids measured at a typical serving temperature. Centipoise (cP) measurements were compared for three products (two starch and one gum-based thickener) mixed with five beverages that set for three time intervals (manufacturer recommended time to thicken, 10 and 30 minutes). The serving temperature of the cold beverages was 4º C (water, apple juice, orange juice, and milk), and the hot beverage (coffee) was measured at 70º C. Statistical analysis showed that all factors interacted with one another, meaning that the viscosity of a nectar- or honey-like liquid varies greatly depending on the type of thickening agent and beverage combination in relation to the amount of time its thickens. Simply Thick, the gum-based thickener, typically produced samples that were the least viscous but they maintained a more consistent level of thickness over time. Serving temperature results are contrasted with viscosity measurements collected at room temperature, showing variable thickening patterns especially related to the type of thickening agent

This research analyzes a part of the artistic work of Gordon Matta-Clark (1943-1978) and its disruptive impact on the artistic field. The main objective is to examine the use of intervention in contemporary art and the theoretical discourse of this artist, who is recognized for his combination of theory and artistic practice. It seeks to understand the historical references of artistic intervention and the use of urban space in his work, through research on the work of this artist, texts written by the artist himself, as well as studies after his death., videos and photographs. The method used by Matta-Clark to intervene in urban space is also examined, as well as the theoretical and conceptual tools present in his work Day's End (1975). It seeks to establish a relationship between the processes analyzed in his work and contemporary artistic production. This research highlights the relevance of Matta-Clark's practices and his implications for contemporary art. In the same way, this analysis is a foundation for the creation of the Relleno series of the author of this degree project

Energy Saving Opportunities and Value of Information: A Trade-off in a Production Line

    No full text
AbstractA general framework for switching the machine off/on has been recently proposed in literature for single machines. However, the amount of information available along the production system is often limited and it might be not trivial to understand which information provides more benefits. This paper studies the performance of a production line when several control policies are applied at machine level. The amount of information at machine level varies and the trade-off with energy reduction is investigated. The considered performance measures are the energy consumed per part and the system throughput. Numerical results are based on discrete event simulation

This research is aimed at highlighting the importance of obsolete and deteriorated urban areas to revitalize them and contribute to the development of cities. The research is carried out on the “Urban Revitalization” line and a “Sustainable City” approach, addressing concepts found in projects located both outside and within Latin America, understanding the impact of the economic inactivity of a complete neighborhood in the context of Matta Sur neighborhood (commune of Santiago), specifically in the city of Santiago de Chile. The project is developed by analyzing the site from a study, a diagnostic mode, the urban environment comprised of aspects of concern to the population, current equipment and mobility and connectivity, which demonstrates the social and spatial development that neighborhood presents cause of the absence of spaces and convening activities. The elaboration of a table of results (call DOFA matrix) and its graphic explanation would complement the investigation by allowing the design strategies approach and, finally, a sustainable urban proposal whose objective would be the revitalization of the Matta Sur neighborhood. The memories of past disaster experiences tend to fade out quickly. Survivors do not want to keep horrible memories, and try to forget it. Although the transference of lessons learnt through past disaster experience is considered as one of ways to motivate people to take disaster preventive action, the mechanism of how the personal memory form collective memory and transfer to other generation/region is still not clear. In this study, we focus on the memory of earthquake disaster in different region, Turkey, Taiwan and Indonesia. Through field studies we try to find out what kind of memory do people talk as personal memory, and how those personal memory form collective memory and will be transferred. The memories of past disaster experiences tend to fade out quickly.
