    No full text

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) judged in the Melo Tadeu case that the refusal of the authorities to undo the seizure of assets after a criminal acquittal, is disproportional, regardless whether the appeal was too late. The Melo Tadeu judgment implies mainly that the presumption of innocence remains in full force after a criminal acquittal. In this article the author discusses the Melo Tadeu judgment of the ECHR

Abstract: Based on the collaboration between Melo e Castro and Herberto Helder for the second issue of the PO.EX magazine, from 1966, the article proposes a dialogue between the two poets regarding the use of the cybernetic method of combination in their poetics. A gramática filosófica de Bernardo de Lima e Melo Bacelar (1783)

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the linguistic and pedagogical ideas present in the “Grammatica Philosophica da Língua Portugueza” (1783), by Bernardo de Lima e Melo Bacelar (ca.1736-post.1787), leaving from a critical reading of this Grammar book and an analysis about other researchers who have already studied it. The “Grammatica” is divided into three parts, according to the parts of the grammatical sentence and their functions in the sentence. These parts are subdivided into chapters. The author uses the case nomenclature to describe the terms of the sentences. His intention was to offer to the readers an innovative material, which could present the rules of the Portuguese language by a new methodology. Bacelar believed that a clear, precise and unambiguous communication would only be possible through the knowledge of these rules. As an attentive follower of Port-Royal’s rationalist ideas and of the Enlightenment, he also believed in the existence of an universal grammar. Although he was a great erudite of classical languages and of the Portuguese language, his job was underestimated by the scholars of his time. Unfortunately, he did not achieve his purpose of providing clarity in communication.

In this paper we propose to analyze the complex relationships between João Cabral de Melo Neto and Portuguese literature and the way he fits in this literature through Cesário Verde, whose poetry is stripped of rhetorical ornaments and focuses, among all the senses, a vision of reality. These characteristics made the author of Serial recognize himself in Cesário Verde’s poetry and consider him as the greatest Portuguese poet.

    No full text
Abstract: The first poem of João Cabral de Melo Neto’s fourteenth book – “The museum of everything” (O museu de tudo, in the original) – presents itself as something prone to ambiguity. Ironically, the poetic persona places it on two opposite ends: it can be either a box of trash or an archive. The ambiguous aspect of this “presentation poem” permeates the set of 80 poems that integrates Museu de tudo (1975), a book that both its author and the specialized critic define as more prone to circumstantial poetry, although they also relate it to the exercise of critical poetry. Based on the tension suggested by the metaphor of De Melo Neto’s Museum as a space where aesthetic treasures and less valuable waste are kept, at the same time, this work aims at demonstrating how apparently disparate poetic principles – critical poetry and poems of circumstances – are assembled as the cornerstones of the Museu de tudo. Keywords: Poetics of modernity; João Cabral de Melo Neto; Museum of everything; occasional verse; critical poetry

A policy model for Tunisia with real and financial flows

    No full text
This model was developed to provide a moacroeconomic framework for Tunisia's structural adjustment program and a flexible tool for further country economic analysis. As currently specified, it is designed to analyze fiscal, debt, and incomes policies, while deriving implications for the exchange rate and for the availability of credit to the private sector. Several policy experiments are carried out to illustrate this focus, and suggestions are offered for variations in model closure and detail.Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Banks&Banking Reform,Economic Stabilization,Financial Intermediation
