    No full text
Copper fractionation in plasma, muscle and liver of Nile tilapia was performed after protein separation by 2D-PAGE. SR XRF analysis indicated the presence of copper in three protein spots of plasma, and in two protein spots of muscle and liver, respectively. Copper ions were found to be distributed mostly in proteins that had a molar mass of less than 54 kDa and greater than 13 kDa and a pI in the 5.3-9.3 range. The copper concentration bound to these proteins was determined by GFAAS which showed concentrations in the 1.20-4.82 mg g -1 range.353493498Knox, D., Cowey, C.B., Adron, J.W., (1982) Aquaculture, 27, p. 111Gatlin, D.M., Wilson, P.W., (1986) Aquaculture, 52, p. 191Neves, R.C.F., Moraes, P.M., Silva, F.A., Loureiro, V.R., Saleh, M.A.D., Padilha, C.C.F., Barros, M.M., Padilha, P.M., (2008) Sens. No full text
This paper presents the results obtained from selenium fractionation in plasma, muscle and liver samples of Nile tilapia's (Oreochromis niloticus) after protein separation. The plasma, muscle and liver proteome was obtained by 2D-PAGE, and selenium in protein spots was qualitatively and quantitatively determined by synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). The fluorescence spectra indicated the presence of selenium in three protein spots of plasma, two of muscle and one of liver. Selenium was found to be distributed mainly in proteins with a molar mass smaller than 57.0 kDa and with pI in the range of 5.9-9.6, with one exception in the plasma sample, which presented protein with a molar mass of 60.0 kDa. After acid mineralization of the protein spots, a GFAAS determination of the concentration of selenium bound to these proteins indicated a range of 1.35-6.82 mg per g of protein. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.74158165Voet, D., Voet, J.G., Pratt, C.W., (2002) Fundamentals of Biochemistry, Upgrade Edition (Wiley, New YorkFenton, D.E., (1995) Biocoordination Chemistry, , New York: Oxford Chemistry PrimersGarcia, J.S., Magalhães, C.S., Arruda, M.A.Z., (2006) Talanta, 69, p. 15Gao, Y., Chen, C., Zhang, P., Chai, Z., He, W., Huang, Y., (2003) Anal. Reducing the cost of Post Combustion Capture technology for Pulverized Coal Power Plants by flexible operation

    No full text
Currently the low carbon prices, low Spreads and regulatory uncertainties hampers the business cases for coal-fired power plants with post-combustion capture (PCC) in Europe. Improvement of the business case of coal-fired power plants with post combustion capture requires a different approach in terms of operational dispatch and in terms of investment planning. Both items have been assessed using a comprehensive power plant valuation model developed by TNO. To change the typical base-load production profile of a coal-fired power plant into a more flexible production profile, a Flexible Operating Mechanisms (FOMs) has been developed for PCC. Based on the results of the techno-economic modeling, FOMs improve the business case. Next to this, FOMs present coal fuelled power plants with additional flexibility. This added flexibility could allow coal plants to provide auxiliary services to the grid and remain competitive in relation to cleaner gas-fired plants. The increase of operational flexibility with FOMs created a significant improvement of the NPV value and, therefore, it is justified to look in much more detail how the operational flexibility of a coal-fired power plant with Carbon Capture can be improved. Running a power plant with a 100% capture unit at base load will require significant amount financial support to close the gap. Starting with a smaller capture unit reduce the financial risk and could improve the business case of the coal-fired power plant without PCC from a marginal cost point of view. The main reason for this is the increase of flexibility, by switching on/off the capture unit. Next to this, the decision to invest is always affected by the opportunity costs of making a commitment now, and thereby, giving up the option of waiting for improved market condition. Increasing the size of the capture plant in stages enables the investor to manage those opportunity cost much better.Process and EnergyMechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineerin

The aim of this study was to investigate aspects of body image in a sample of people with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and eating disorder not otherwise specifi ed. The sample was composed of 14 volunteers, cared for by the Eating Disorders Outpatients Clinic, from Universidade Estadual de Campinas. The Software for Perceptual Assessment (SPA) assesses body dissatisfaction. The variables body concern, checking behavior and avoidance behavior were assessed by the Body Shape Questionnaire, Body Checking Questionnaire and Body Image Avoidance Questionnaire, in this order. The descriptive analysis and correlations indicate high levels of dissatisfaction, checking behavior, avoidance behavior, and concern over the body, with signifi cant associations. These fi ndings showed the importance of the investigated parameters for the dynamic of the disease. Knowing these body image components could expand the possibilities of understanding how these patients organize their body representations and carefully plan interventions during the course of the treatment.2253375381(1994) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders: DSM-IV, , American Psychiatric Association. ‘The Churchillian Paradigm and the “Other British Isles”: An Examination of Second World War Remembrance in Man, Orkney, and Jersey’

    No full text
This dissertation studies Second World War ‘sites of memory’ in the islands of Jersey, Orkney and the Isle of Man, to determine if each island celebrates the war’s events as Britain does, or if they have charted their own mnemonic course. It builds on the work of Angus Calder, Malcolm Smith, and Mark Connelly, who have explored how popular conception of the Second World War in Britain has been structured around a certain set of commemorative motifs, most of which centre on Winston Churchill and the events of 1940. The British war narrative is now commonly referred to as the ‘Churchillian paradigm’ or ‘finest-hour myth’, and continues to be the driving force in commemoration and memorialization on the British mainland. The three islands in this study are culturally and historically distinct from Britain, and each has strong notions of its own ‘island identity’. Each also possesses a tangential and divisive domestic experience of war, one which is often minimized in the iconography of the Churchillian paradigm. Jersey was occupied by Nazi Germany from 1940 to 1945, Orkney was home to several thousand Italian POWs who built important infrastructure in the island, and the Isle of Man was home to 14,000 German, Finnish, Japanese, and Italian internees in what one critic has called ‘a bespattered page’ in the nation’s history. By examining ‘sites of memory’— museums, heritage sites, commemorations, celebrations, philately, and use of public space—this dissertation shows that each island simultaneously accepts and rejects elements of the finest-hour myth in their collective memory. Each island displays its unique (though often quite negative) heritage in order to differentiate itself from Britain, while at the same time allowing them, at certain events, to participate in celebration of Britain’s ‘greatest victory’. In this way, islands’ use ‘Britishness’ pragmatically, by basking in traditionally ‘British’ commemorative tropes, while at the same time deepening their own cultural and historical sovereignty

    No full text
In the present study, a simple, rapid and sensitive method was developed for the determination of mercury concentrations in the muscle tissue of fish from the Brazilian Amazon using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) following acid mineralization of the samples in an ultrasonic cold water bath. Using copper nitrate as a chemical modifier in solution and sodium tungstate as permanent modifier, we were able to attain thermal stabilization of the mercury up to the atomisation temperature of 1600 °C in the GFAAS assay. Objective: To evaluate gasometric differences of severe trauma patients requiring intubation in prehospital care. Methods: Patients requiring airway management were submitted to collection of arterial blood samples at the beginning of pre-hospital care and at arrival at the Emergency Room. We analyzed: Glasgow Coma Scale, respiratory rate, arterial pH, arterial partial pressure of CO2 (PaCO2), arterial partial pressure of O2 (PaO2), base excess (BE), hemoglobin O2 saturation (SpO2) and the relation of PaO2 and inspired O2 (PaO2/FiO2). Results: There was statistical significance of the mean differences between the data collected at the site of the accident and at the entrance of the ER as for respiratory rate (p = 0.0181), Glasgow Coma Scale (p = 0.0084), PaO2 (p <0.0001) and SpO2 (p = 0.0018). Conclusion: tracheal intubation changes the parameters PaO2 and SpO2. There was no difference in metabolic parameters (pH, bicarbonate and base excess). In the analysis of blood gas parameters between survivors and non-survivors there was statistical difference between PaO2, hemoglobin oxygen saturation and base excess.404293299Gonsaga, R.A., Brugugnolli, I.D., Fraga, G.P., Comparison between two mobile pre-hospital care services for trauma patients (2012) Word J Emerg Surg., 7 (SUPPL. 1), pp. S6Pereira Júnior, G.A., Carvalho, J.B., Ponte Filho, A.D., Malzone, D.A., Pedersoli, C.E., Transporte intra-hospitalar do paciente crítico (2007) Medicina., 40 (4), pp. 500-508Kue, R., Brown, P., Ness, C., Scheulen, J., Adverse clinical events during intrahospital transport by a specialized team: A preliminary report (2011) Am J Crit Care., 20 (2), pp. 153-161Lima Junior, N.A., Bacelar, S.C., Japiassú, A.M., Cader, S.A., Lima, R.C.F., Dantas, E.H.M., Gasometria arterial em dois diferentes métodos de transporte intra-hospitalar no pós-operatório imediato de cirurgia cardíaca (2012) Rev bras ter intensiva., 24 (2), pp. 162-166Waydhas, C., Schneck, G., Duswald, K.H., Deterioration of respiratory function after intra-hospital transport of critically ill surgical patients (1995) Intensive Care Med., 21 (10), pp. 784-789Zuchelo, L.T.S., Chiavone, P.A., Transporte intra-hospitalar de pacientes sob ventilação invasiva: Repercussões cardiorrespiratórias e eventos adversos (2009) J bras pneumol., 35 (4), pp. 367-374Gervais, H.W., Eberle, B., Konietzke, D., Hennes, H.J., Dick, W., Comparison of blood gases of ventilated patients during transport (1987) Crit Care Med., 15 (8), pp. 761-763Wildner, G., Pauker, N., Archan, S., Gemes, G., Rigaud, M., Pocivalnik, M., Arterial line in prehospital emergency settings-A feasibility study in four physician-staffed emergency medical systems (2011) Resuscitation., 82 (9), pp. 1198-1201Schmelzer, T.M., Perron, A.D., Thomason, M.H., Sing, R.F., A comparison of central venous and arterial base deficit as a predictor of survival in acute trauma (2008) Am J Emerg Med., 26 (2), pp. 119-123Bilello, J.F., Davis, J.W., Lemaster, D., Townsend, R.N., Parks, S.N., Sue, L.P., Prehospital hypotension in blunt trauma: Identifying the "crump factor" (2011) J Trauma., 70 (5), pp. 1038-1042(2012) Atendimento pré-hospitalar ao traumatizado, PHTLS / NAEMT, , Tradução do original Prehospital trauma life support, por Renata Scavone, et al. 7a ed.
