Optimal estimation of parameters
"This book presents a comprehensive and consistent theory of estimation. The framework described leads naturally to a generalized maximum capacity estimator. This approach allows the optimal estimation of real-valued parameters, their number and intervals, as well as providing common ground for explaining the power of these estimators. Beginning with a review of coding and the key properties of information, the author goes on to discuss the techniques of estimation and develops the generalized maximum capacity estimator, based on a new form of Shannon's mutual information and channel capacity. Applications of this powerful technique in hypothesis testing and denoising are described in detail. Offering an original and thought-provoking perspective on estimation theory, Jorma Rissanen's book is of interest to graduate students and researchers in the fields of information theory, probability and statistics, econometrics and finance"-

Linjasaneeraus on laaja kiinteistön teknisten järjestelmien korjaushanke. Linjasaneeraushanke voidaan toteuttaa monella tapaa.
Oulu University of Applied Sciences

A pipeline renovation is a large project of the techinal systems in properties, and it is possible to implement them in many different ways.
The focus in this project has been to find out different key issues for a pipeline renovation. The key issues have been reflected through some experiences of realized projects and interviews of the experts.
The targets for this work have been to help the company of WSP to improve systems and services in daily projects with the pipeline renovation. In this way it is believable to achieve higher quality in both efficiency and customer satisfaction.
On the basis of the results of this thesis, the main task in developing a pipeline renovation is meticulous and patient design, including, for example, acquiring the source information, setting the goals together with the clients, designers and other authorities.
As a result of this work, a list about how to carry out such a large project was created for future use. The check-list will help to improve the ability to prioritize the things to be carried out in this kind of project. The check-list will help to work in different challenges in this kind of project

OF MASTER S THESIS Author: Hannu Rummukainen Title of thesis: On Approximative Markov Control of Multiservice Telecommunication Links Finnish title: Markov-ptksenteon approksimoinnista usean palvelutyypin tietoliikennelinkeill Date: 29. 2. 2000 Pages: 86+v Department: Department of Engineering Physics and Mathematics Chair: Mat-1 Mathematics Supervisor: Professor Olavi Nevanlinna Instructor: Professor Jorma Virtamo A modern circuit-switched telecommunication network offers point-to-point connections. The problem in network control is to choose the links along which each connection is routed, and to decide which connection requests should be denied in order not to exceed the network capacity
Genetic association study of QT interval highlights role for calcium signaling pathways in myocardial repolarization.
The QT interval, an electrocardiographic measure reflecting myocardial repolarization, is a heritable trait. QT prolongation is a risk factor for ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death (SCD) and could indicate the presence of the potentially lethal mendelian long-QT syndrome (LQTS). Using a genome-wide association and replication study in up to 100,000 individuals, we identified 35 common variant loci associated with QT interval that collectively explain ∼8-10% of QT-interval variation and highlight the importance of calcium regulation in myocardial repolarization. Rare variant analysis of 6 new QT interval-associated loci in 298 unrelated probands with LQTS identified coding variants not found in controls but of uncertain causality and therefore requiring validation. Several newly identified loci encode proteins that physically interact with other recognized repolarization proteins. Our integration of common variant association, expression and orthogonal protein-protein interaction screens provides new insights into cardiac electrophysiology and identifies new candidate genes for ventricular arrhythmias, LQTS and SCD
Order structure, multipliers, and Gelfand representation of vector-valued function algebras
AbstractWe continue the study begun by the third author of -Segal algebra valued function algebras, with an emphasis on the order structure. Our main result is a characterization theorem for -Segal algebra valued function algebras with an order unitization. As an intermediate step, we establish a function algebraic description of the multiplier module of arbitrary Segal algebra valued function algebras. We also consider Gelfand representation of these algebras in the commutative case.Abstract

Author response: Analysis of SUMO1-conjugation at synapses
SUMO1-conjugation of proteins at neuronal synapses is considered to be a major post-translational regulatory process in nerve cell and synapse function, but the published evidence for SUMO1-conjugation at synapses is contradictory. We employed multiple genetic mouse models for stringently controlled biochemical and immunostaining analyses of synaptic SUMO1-conjugation. By using a knock-in reporter mouse line expressing tagged SUMO1, we could not detect SUMO1-conjugation of seven previously proposed synaptic SUMO1-targets in the brain. Further, immunostaining of cultured neurons from wild-type and SUMO1 knock-out mice showed that anti-SUMO1 immunolabelling at synapses is non-specific. Our findings indicate that SUMO1-conjugation of synaptic proteins does not occur or is extremely rare and hence not detectable using current methodology. Based on our data, we discuss a set of experimental strategies and minimal consensus criteria for the validation of SUMOylation that can be applied to any SUMOylation substrate and SUMO isoform.</jats:p
AS-Net : active speaker detection using deep audio-visual attention
Funding Information: This work is supported by the Academy of Finland in project 345791. We acknowledge the LUMI supercomputer, owned by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, hosted by CSC and the LUMI consortium. Publisher Copyright: © 2024, The Author(s).Active Speaker Detection (ASD) aims at identifying the active speaker among multiple speakers in a video scene. Previous ASD models often seek audio and visual features from long video clips with a complex 3D Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture. However, models based on 3D CNNs can generate discriminative spatial-temporal features, but this comes at the expense of computational complexity, and they frequently face challenges in detecting active speakers in short video clips. This work proposes the Active Speaker Network (AS-Net) model, a simple yet effective ASD method tailored for detecting active speakers in relatively short video clips without relying on 3D CNNs. Instead, it incorporates the Temporal Shift Module (TSM) into 2D CNNs, facilitating the extraction of dense temporal visual features without the need for additional computations. Moreover, self-attention and cross-attention schemes are introduced to enhance long-term temporal audio-visual synchronization, thereby improving ASD performance. Experimental results demonstrate that AS-Net outperforms state-of-the-art 2D CNN-based methods on the AVA-ActiveSpeaker dataset and remains competitive with the methods utilizing more complex architectures.Peer reviewe
