In 1928 Rudolf Carnap put forward his proposal of a rational reconstruction of knowledge, which took the form of a foundationalist structure whose basis was formulated in a phenomenal language; a subject.s sense data (Erlebnissen) is in such system the ultimate basis of all justification of knowledge. Afterwards, as a result of Carnap.s debates with Otto Neurath, who held a falibilist conception of science, Carnap gradually changed his own conception of the system.s basis and the basic statements describing it, culminating in the paper ¡°On Protocol Sentences,¡± in which a conventionalist view of science can be found. The Carnap-Neurath debate has been motivated by their differences in dealing with protocol statements, and one is lead to conclude that their different views amount to important differences in the very results of rational reconstruction of knowledge, as well as the image of science which stems from such reconstruction

A historical reconstruction of the connections between the Viennese neopositivists and the American pragmatists: economic theory in the project for the International Encyclopaedia of Unified Science

Persuaded by the fact that the philosophical debate in Vienna during the 1930s deeply influenced the subsequent American developments of economic theory, my purpose is to reconstruct, from a historical and theoretical point of view, how Austrian interests in economics (which spread in the interwar period) moved to the USA, and what the subsequent developments were. From a historical point of view, I shall focus on the genesis of the International Encyclopaedia of Unified Science promoted by philosophers belonging to the Vienna Circle (Otto Neurath, Rudolph Carnap and Philipp Frank) and American pragmatists (John Dewey and, above all, Charles Morris) between 1938 and 1969. From a theoretical point of view, I shall focus on the development of economic theory within this project, which was regarded as the most important outcome of logical positivism or new empiricism, this being the common philosophical outlook that they shared. The aim of this paper is to show how the original meaning of economics (as formulated by Neurath) within the Vienna Circle was changed in its transition from Vienna to the USA (when the International Encyclopaedia was organized) and was finally radically transformed in the American context during the following decades.

Otto Neurath: lenguaje, ciencia y valores. La incidencia de lo político

Neurath’s project centrally included the thesis of unified science because of its functionality for political action with the purpose of attaining a better human society. This was so, because unified science was a fundamental instrument for the unity of action which, in turn, required of a fluid communication. Finally that sort of communication depended upon a certain unity of the language of science. The outcome was Neurath’s radical anti-foundational conventionalism according to which scientists should make decisions for adopting goals, instruments for achieving them, and also for accepting/rejecting hypotheses and encyclopedias. Those decisions would necessarily involve “auxiliary motives” like utility, human happiness, improving the situation of the proletariat, among others. Therefore, there is a strong interrelation between science and politics, because the former is a fundamental instrument for successfully attaining political goals, and mainly because political motives may play a crucial role in decisions for scientific acceptance.
