Operators associated with soft and hard spectral edges from unitary ensembles.

Using Hankel operators and shift-invariant subspaces on Hilbert space, this paper develops the theory of integrable operators associated with soft and hard edges of eigenvalues distributions of random matrices. Such Tracy--Widom operators are realized as controllability operators for linear systems, and are reporducing kernels for weighted Hardy spaces, known as Sonine spaces. Periodic solutions of Hill's equation give a new family of Tracy--Widom type operators. This paper identifies a pair of unitary groups that satisfy the von Neumann--Weyl anti-commutation relations and leave invariant the subspaces of L^2 that are the ranges of projections given by Tracy--Widom operators for the soft edge of the unitary ensemble and hard edge of the Jacobi ensemble

Effectiveness of the Schools to Watch Process in Identifying High Functioning Middle Schools

The purposes of this quantitative nonexperimental causal-comparative study were to explore the relationship between Pennsylvania middle schools designated as a Pennsylvania Schools to Watch and non-designated schools in academic achievement and the perception of teachers on the fidelity of implementing middle level education characteristics stated in This We Believe: Keys to Educating Young Adolescents (AMLE, 2010). The study focused on the results of seventh-grade math and ELA PSSA scores because most middle schools include a seventh-grade. Through the comparison of seventh-grade 2017 math and ELA PSSA data and 2017 SPP scores between designated schools and non-designated schools as of January 2017, this study investigated if there was a relationship between designation status and academic success. The results of this study indicated that designated schools did have a statistically significant higher percentage of students earning proficient scores and a statistically significant lower number of students earning below basic scores on the seventh-grade 2017 math PSSA compared to non-designated schools. Similarly, the results of this study indicated that designated schools did have a statistically significant higher percentage of students earning advanced scores and a statistically significant lower number of students earning basic scores and below basic scores on the seventh-grade 2017 ELA PSSA compared to non-designated schools. In addition, the results from this study indicated that several of the sections on the Middle Level Concept Implementation Survey, including Middle School Concept and Professional Preparation, School Environment and Expectations, and Curriculum and Instruction, showed a statistically significant positive correlation to the 2017 SPP scores of both designated schools and non-designated schools. In contrast, the results from the study failed to show if there was a relationship between designation status and 2017 SPP scores. Lastly, the results of the study indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between the responses of teachers from designated schools and teachers from non-designated schools on the Middle Level Concept Implementation Survey, with teachers from designated schools responding more favorably to the survey questions compared to teachers from non-designated schools

Designing Tracy: a conversational holiday recommender for Generation Z

    No full text
Virtual assistants are rapidly growing in popularity, triggering businesses around the world to explore their applicability. From a user perspective,, having a conversational interaction with technology has certain advantages, as it is easy to use, hands-free and eye-free. Despite the fact that Transavia already released its first steps with the assistant, there is still minor knowledge about how it can be used effectively to engage with the customer. A techy, social and young customer group - often referred to as Generation Z - is interacting with technology and brands in a very different way than Millenials. As a starting point, a preliminary design goal is formulated which links the technology and the user to an early touch point in Transavia’s customer journey: “Design a virtual assistant for Transavia that offers added value in helping Generation Z with finding and/or booking flights”. The contexts of four aspects are analysed: business, process, user and technology, which together lay the foundation for the subsequent user studies. The studies show the flight finding and -booking behaviour of Generation Z, as well as their current and preferred interactions with virtual assistants. Based on the outcomes the witty assistant ‘Tracy’ is conceptualised and piloted using the Google Assistant and Lenovo Smart Display. Tracy focuses on the moment right before booking called pre-booking, and recommends Generation Z affordable trips based on their availability. Alongside user tests the prototype goes through three iterations to optimise various aspects of the design: tone-of-voice, product personality, content and conversational flow. The final design is intended to be feasible for a short term release, and proved there lies true potential in using a conversational interface to engage with Generation Z in the pre-booking phase. Finally, recommendations are proposed for Transavia to support them when continuing with either Tracy or with virtual assistance in general.Design for Interactio
