Pierwsza powieść apologetyczna Henryka Sienkiewicza
The article The first apologetic novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz refers to a novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz Children of the soil. The piece of work consists of four sections. In the first one , I showed that the apology for Christianity was a conscious target of the author of the novel. In the second, I presented a review of a previous novel by Sienkiewicz Without dogma, written by prof. Stanisław Tarnowski, as it forms an essential ideology background for the comprehension of our author’s views. Next, I made a review of the most interesting remarks of the contemporary researchers on the theme of Children of the soil. In the fourth section, I analyze the contents of the novel and extract different and visible in it planes of apologia: from the criticism of bourgeois morality, through romantic visions of the future of Christianity, up to the alternations of attitudes of particular characters in the Christian spirit.
The census of non-radial pulsation in first-overtone RRLyrae stars of the OGLE Galactic bulge collection
We analysed photometry for the up-to-date collection of the first-overtone RRLyrae stars (RRc; 11415 stars) and double-mode RRLyrae stars (RRd; 148 stars) towards the Galactic bulge from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE). We analysed frequency spectra of these stars in search for additional, low-amplitude signals, beyond the radial modes. We focused on stars from two groups: RR0.61 and RR0.68. In the first group, additional low-amplitude signals have periods shorter than the first-overtone period; period ratios fall in the 0.60-0.64 range. In the second group, additional low-amplitude signals have periods longer than the first-overtone period; period ratios tightly cluster around 0.68. Altogether we have detected 960 and 147 RRLyrae stars that belong to RR0.61 and RR0.68 groups, respectively, which yield the incidence rates of 8.3 and 1.3percent of the considered sample. We discuss statistical properties of RRLyrae stars with additional periodicities. For RR0.61 group we provide strong arguments that additional periodicities are connected to non-radial pulsation modes of degrees l=8 and l=9, as proposed by Dziembowski. We have also detected two double-periodic variables, with two close periodicities, similar to RRLyrae variable V37 in NGC6362. Properties of these peculiar variables, which may form a new group of double-mode pulsators, are discussed
Modeling of multimode radially pulsating High-Amplitude Delta Scuti stars from the OGLE Galactic bulge sample
Thanks to relatively firm mode identification, possible based on period
ratios only, High Amplitude Delta Scuti Stars pulsating in at least three
radial modes are promising targets for asteroseismic inference. In this study
we used the most numerous sample of HADS from the OGLE inner bulge fields that
likely pulsate in either three or four radial modes simultaneously. We have
computed a grid of pulsation models along evolutionary tracks and determined
the physical parameters of stars by matching their pulsation periods and period
ratios. For 176 HADS we determined physical parameters, i.e. masses,
luminosities, effective temperatures, metallicities and ages. We present the
distribution of physical parameters and discuss their properties. We selected
16 candidates for SX Phoenicis stars.Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA
Blazhko modulation in first-overtone RR Lyrae stars from the OGLE Collection
We present results of the first comprehensive study of the Blazhko effect in first-overtone RR Lyrae stars from the Galactic bulge based on the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment data
Kurpie były centrum świata dla Henryka Syski (1920–2000)
The work refers to Henryk Syska – perhaps the most prominent writer of Kurpie Land. It can be repeated after Leszek Kołakowski that every “small Homeland” becomes to a man, and even more to a writer, a kind of “the center of the world”. The author of the article, presenting the output of Syska, shows that, in essence, “the core” of the writer’s work was the Kurpie region.

Abstract
Despite modern therapeutic solutions, patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and bronchial asthma do not achieve therapeutic benefits due to emerging obstacles to compliance. This review aimed to present and analyze the results of available studies evaluating the influence of sociodemographic, clinical, and psychosocial factors on the level of adherence of patients with COPD and asthma. This narrative review was based on papers indexed in the following databases: PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Scopus. The analyzed studies showed that the adherence level of patients with COPD and asthma is unsatisfactory, ranging from 23.6 to 80%. The main factors increasing the level of adherence of COPD patients mentioned in the analyzed studies were: unemployment, taking LAMA, not smoking cigarettes, belief that medication is necessary, higher education, use of multi-dose DPI and MDI inhalers, a greater sense of self-efficacy, and longer duration of disease. Independent determinants of good adherence of patients with asthma were better quality of life, high level of disease control, treatment with ICS + LABA or FF/UMEC/VI, good knowledge about asthma, and positive attitude towards the disease. According to available studies, determinants lowering adherence among patients with COPD were overweight or obesity, depression, poor quality of life, belief that treatment is harmful, frequent hospitalizations, lack of knowledge about the disease and treatment, sleep disorders, and use of ICS, LABA/ICS. Patients with asthma who received infrequent functional support consumed alcohol and were convinced of the harm and lack of need for treatment were non-adherent. In addition, an association was shown between high levels of adherence and a reduction in ED visits and hospitalizations in asthma and COPD patients.

Asteroseismology of RR Lyrae stars with non-radial modes
The additional signals observed in the frequency spectra of the
first-overtone RR Lyrae stars, that form a period ratio around 0.61 with the
period of the first overtone, are a common phenomenon for RRc and RRd stars, as
well as for first-overtone classical Cepheids. The recently proposed model
explains these signals as harmonics of non-radial modes of degrees 8 or 9 in
the case of RR Lyrae stars and 7, 8, or 9 in the case of classical Cepheids. We
selected at least triple-mode RR Lyrae stars pulsating in radial and non-radial
modes for asteroseismic modeling. We assume the identification of the
non-radial modes as predicted by the model. We calculated a dense grid of
models for RR Lyrae stars using envelope pulsation code. By matching first
overtone period and period ratios we obtained physical parameters for the
selected sample of triple-mode stars. It is the very first attempt of modeling
RR Lyrae stars with non-radial modes. We compared our results with predictions
of stellar evolution theory, which resulted in a mass discrepancy more
noticeable for long-period stars: pulsation masses seem higher than
evolutionary masses. We compared metallicity estimates for RRc stars from
modeled sample with metallicities determined spectroscopically for a sample of
RRc stars in the solar neighbourhood: both distributions are consistent.Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA
Non-radial modes in classical Cepheids : what to look for in spectroscopy?
Abstract: Recent photometric observations of first-overtone classical Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars have led to the discovery of additional frequencies showing a characteristic period ratio of 0.60-0.65 with the main pulsation mode. In a promising model proposed by Dziembowski (2016), these signals are suggested to be due to the excitation of non-radial modes with degrees 7, 8, and 9 (Cepheids) or 8 and 9 (RR Lyrae). Such modes usually have low amplitudes in photometric data. Spectroscopic time series offer an unexplored and promising way forward. We simulated time series of synthetic line profiles for a representative first-overtone classical Cepheid model and added a low-amplitude non-radial mode. We studied sets of spectra with dense sampling and without noise, so-called 'perfect' cases, as well as more realistic samplings and signal-to-noise levels. Besides the first-overtone mode and the non-radial mode, also the harmonics of both modes and combination signals were often detected, but a sufficiently high sampling and signal-to-noise ratio prove essential. The amplitudes of the non-radial mode and its harmonic depend on the azimuthal order in. The inclination is also an important factor determining the detectability of the non-radial mode and/or its harmonic. We compared the results obtained for the predicted high degrees with those for lower-degree modes. Finally, we studied the sampling requirements for detecting the non-radial mode. Our findings can be used to plan a spectroscopic observing campaign tailored to uncover the nature of these mysterious modes
O tragizmie cnoty zadufanej. Analiza estetyczno-etycznych aspektów pedagogiki tragicznej Henryka Elzenberga.
The paper is a continuation of the analysis of the basic aspects of Henryk Elzenber's tragic pedagogy. The confrontation with the tragic nature of existence, and therefore with the destruction of what is beautiful and good, serves in Elzenberg's conception of shaping the moral character by renouncing lower values, up to sacrifice, devotion to the highest values. Thus, suffering activates the moral, creative and cultural potential of an individual and a community. The moral limitations of Brutus, ranging from the stoic ideal of steadfastness in the face of suffering, through blindness in loving a (dis)friend and the republic, to intellectualism and naive faith in the superiority of virtue over the pragmatic logic of the struggle for power, reflect the tension between duty and existence, moral imperative and efficiency. "Homo ethicus" differs essentially from "homo politicus" and is doomed to failure in political rivalry, and at the same time its heroism lies at the basis of memory and collective identity. Culture is based on honoring the losers and those who gave their lives for the 'cause' because in them an extreme dedication to values is manifested. The author, in reference to Polish Christian thought (S. Wyszyński), indicates the possibility of extending the Elzenberg's concept of the hero, inspired by Greco-Roman themes and the Polish insurgent tradition, with practical rationality, arising from embedding in a real genealogical line, the ability to critically assimilate tradition, affirmation of one's own imperfections and imperfections in the world, to valor and self-sacrifice in everyday practices. The sanctity of heroism exceeds the dimension of self-centered 'care for the soul' and heroic patriotism, becoming sacrifice for others in the service of others
