    A multi-pass facility was fabricated for equal-channel angular (ECA) pressing which gave a total strain of approximately 5 on a single passage through the die. Experiments on high purity aluminum show that, when comparisons are made at the same total strains, both the hardness and the evolution of the microstructure are identical when using the multi-pass facility or when repetitively pressing samples through a standard die containing a single shearing plane

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Substitution of only two residues of human Hsp90alpha causes impeded dimerization of Hsp90beta.

    Two isoforms of the 90-kDa heat-shock protein (Hsp90), i.e., Hsp90alpha and Hsp90beta, are expressed in the cytosol of mammalian cells. Although Hsp90 predominantly exists as a dimer, the dimer-forming potential of the beta isoform of human and mouse Hsp90 is less than that of the alpha isoform. The 16 amino acid substitutions located in the 561-685 amino acid region of the C-terminal dimerization domain should be responsible for this impeded dimerization of Hsp90beta (Nemoto T, Ohara-Nemoto Y, Ota M, Takagi T, Yokoyama K. Eur J Biochem 233: 1-8, 1995). The present study was performed to define the amino acid substitutions that cause the impeded dimerization of Hsp90beta. Bacterial two-hybrid analysis revealed that among the 16 amino acids, the conversion from Ala(558) of Hsp90beta to Thr(566) of Hsp90alpha and that from Met(621) of Hsp90beta to Ala(629) of Hsp90alpha most efficiently reversed the dimeric interaction, and that the inverse changes from those of Hsp90alpha to Hsp90beta primarily explained the impeded dimerization of Hsp90beta We conclude that taken together, the conversion of Thr(566) and Ala(629) of Hsp90alpha to Ala(558) and Met(621) is primarily responsible for impeded dimerization of Hsp90beta

    Superplastic forming at high strain rates after severe plastic deformation

    An Al-3% Mg-0.2% Sc alloy was fabricated by casting and subjected to severe plastic deformation through equal-channel angular pressing to a strain of ~8. The grain size after pressing was ~0.2 ?m and increased to ?1.1 ?m when holding at 673 K for 10 min. Very high tensile elongations were recorded at 673 K with a maximum elongation of ~2280% when testing with an initial strain rate of 3.3 × 10?2 s?1. The strain rate sensitivity was measured as ~0.5 at strain rates in the vicinity of 10?2 s?1. Small disks were cut from the rods after pressing and these disks were successfully formed into domes at 673 K using a biaxial gas-pressure forming facility and forming times up to a maximum of 60 s. Measurements of the local thicknesses at selected points around the domes revealed reasonably uniform thinning which is consistent with the high strain rate sensitivity of this alloy

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Expanding “Communities and Collections” in the K-State Research Exchange (K-REx) to benefit the K-State Community and Beyond

    Kansas State University has used its institutional repository, the K-State Research Exchange (K-REx), to store and share its first year experience program, K-State First, and notably its common reading program, K-State First Book. We have done so with the aim that the accessibility and preservation of these documents ensures program stability, promotes engagement with first year programming, and provides the ability to foster growth,educational opportunities, and community building outside of K-State. Moving away from research concentrated repositories and taking a more holistic approach to scholarship, especially when realizing the pedagogical significance of collaborative campus programming, institutions can showcase, discover, preserve, and grow programs that shape campus communities and engagement. This session will provide an overview of K-REx and spotlight the digital archive of the university’s first year experience program and common reading program, K-State First Book. We will discuss the benefits and challenges to expanding the purview of your repositories. We talkthrough the types of materials we decide to host in our repository and why we share what we do. We will also provide recommendations on new ways to evaluate what belongs in institutional repositories and how this diversity can benefit your program, your institution, the community, and others
