Improving Resilience against Urban Fire Hazards through Environmental Design in Dense Urban Areas in Surabaya, Indonesia
AbstractHow the built environment is designed and built greatly affects its performance in providing livable spaces for its users. Having high population and building density, man-made disasters such as inundation and urban fire remain major threats to Surabaya, Indonesia's second largest city. This paper proposes an approach to improve an urban neighborhood's resilience against urban fires using a design matrix to describe the interaction between Lynch's urban design components and Cai and Wang's idea of Safety-based Urban Design. Paying attention to psychological safety, behavioral safety, defense for safety and safety against disaster in the design and planning of a neighborhood's paths, edges, nodes, districts and landmarks can improve disaster preparedness. A good environmental design can lower urban fire vulnerability, support mitigation efforts and increase disaster preparedness, and make a large difference in the response to an emergency situation. However, to improve overall resilience, both anthropogenic and bio-physic aspects that make up the environment must be acknowledged. Awareness against urban fires must be raised as the physical environment is shaped one component at a time
Factors contributing to housing provision in Surabaya: perspectives from real estate developers / Yosafat Raka Narendra and Prananda Navitas
Housing is a basic need that impacts the well-being of its inhabitants, and housing provision is key to ensuring equal access to housing. To be successful in the long term, housing provision must meet people’s needs and preferences. Surabaya is the second-largest city in Indonesia and has a significant demand for housing. This article presents a part of a larger study analysing housing choice and housing preference compatibility among Millennials in Surabaya. This paper specifically aims to assess factors influencing homebuying decisions prioritised by property practitioners in Surabaya using the Analytic Hierarchy Process. Findings from this research are vital to increasing our understanding of real estate developers’ priority in housing provision. Analysis reveals that location is the primary consideration for developers when engaging in real estate development activities in Surabaya. Locations near the CBD and shopping facilities are highly desirable. Before carrying out development activities, developers consider the following key variables: distance and accessibility to the central business district, shopping amenities, healthcare, and educational facilities. Other factors considered are property title and infrastructure, and amenities. Therefore, a key policy priority should be to plan for ensuring land availability for real estate development near activity centres
Liveable street design guideline for youth community place in Sudimoro Café Corridor, Malang City / Julia Oktaviani Hardiyanto and Prananda Navitas
A drastic land use transformation in Malang City happens at Ikan Tombro Street, which has developed into the Sudimoro Cafe Corridor because of its prospective location. However, this youth-bustling built-up area cannot provide appropriate facilities for its visitors. Consequently, several problems appear gradually each year, such as floods. Furthermore, the lack of parking areas causes heavy traffic, making this area unsafe for pedestrians. Together with government policy for developing the corridor, a liveable street approach can be a strategy to provide decent infrastructure and solve different problems at once in this area. The proposed paper describes research to create design guidelines for Sudimoro Cafe Corridor with the liveable street concept to promote the youth community place in Malang City. First, an online questionnaire among Malang City residents was distributed to evaluate the importance and performance of liveable street attributes. The researchers also interviewed relevant stakeholders to assess liveable street components further. Finally, a descriptive qualitative analysis with triangulation approach was conducted by combining the result from the previous analysis, relevant liveable street literature, and local regulations to produce the desired output. The findings of this study resulted in a liveable street design guideline highlighting safety, convenience, circulation and parking, open space, pedestrians, activities, and uniqueness that will interest local decision-makers involved in the planning industry. Besides that, this research also contributes to a deeper understanding of the factors influencing liveability in urbanized areas from the youth perspective. This understanding will be of particular interest to decision-makers as it will help them create urban spaces that are more welcoming and inclusive
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Arahan Pengembangan Ekonomi Kabupaten Lamongan Berdasarkan Sektor Unggulan (Studi Kasus: Sektor Pertanian)
Communication Dynamics Between First-Year Doctoral Students and Supervisors
Building and maintaining a relationship with the supervisor is crucial for a doctoral student to guarantee stable progress. One of the important aspects is owing to both written and spoken communication, for example, in email and direct conversations. This study examines sample communication activitie of three Indonesian doctoral students and their supervisors to unfold the construction of shared values between them. An appraisal system analyses the linguistic mechanism of engagement, attitude, and graduation systems through which power and relationship are built between first-year doctoral students and their supervisors
