A SURREALIST READING OF MOHSIN HAMID'S EXIT WEST
The study aims at exploring the surrealist elements in Mohsin Hamid's novel Exit West. It analyzes the motifs and a technique employed by Hamid, and discusses how they contribute to the overall themes of displacement, migration, and identity in the novel. The study also examines how Hamid uses surrealist imagery, dream-like sequences, and unconventional perspectives to depict the characters' experiences of dislocation and otherness. The knowledge of the elements of surrealism will add depth and nuance to the novel's exploration of complex and timely issues. Using a close reading approach to the selected passages, the paper evaluates the ways in which the author employs surrealist techniques to challenge conventional notions of time, space, and reality, and to convey the experiences of displacement, migration, and the erosion of identity. Through the knowledge of surrealism in the context of the novel, the readers can gain a greater understanding of the power of the imagination to shape their understanding of the world and human experience
Exogenous Application of Salicylic Acid Improves Physiological and Biochemical Attributes of Morus alba Saplings under Soil Water Deficit
Morus alba L. is a multipurpose and fast-growing tree species. However, its growth and productivity are susceptible to water stress. Therefore, a study was conducted to check the effectiveness of foliar application of salicylic acid (SA) in improving the water stress tolerance of M. alba. A pot experiment was conducted and the morphological, physiological and biochemical attributes of young M. alba saplings were assessed under control (CK, 90% of field capacity (FC)), moderate (MS, 60% of FC) and high soil water deficits (HS, 30% of FC), along with MS and HS + foliar application of SA 0.5 and 1.0 mM (MS + 0.5; HS + 0.5; MS + 1.0, and HS+1.0, respectively). Results demonstrated that the highest decrease in plant growth, leaf, stems and roots’ dry biomass, chlorophyll a, b, carotenoid contents and leaf gas exchange parameters was observed under HS, whereas the lowest decrease was evidenced for HS + 1.0 mM SA. Electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde contents, hydrogen peroxide and superoxide radicals significantly increased under HS, while the lowest increase was evidenced for HS + 1.0 mM SA. The highest increase in proline content, total soluble sugar, total phenolic content, soluble protein and superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase was also found under HS + 1.0 mM SA. Based on the results, it can be concluded that foliar application of SA can help improve the water deficit tolerance of Morus alba saplings, especially under high soil water deficit.The Offices of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC)Open-Access-Publikationsfonds 202
Kinetic modeling and optimization of parameters for biomass pyrolysis: A comparison of different lignocellulosic biomass
A primitive element for the development of sustainable pyrolysis processes is the study of thermal degradation kinetics of lignocellulosic waste materials for optimal energy conversion. The study presented here was conducted to predict and compare the optimal kinetic parameters for pyrolysis of various lignocellulosic biomass such as wood sawdust, bagasse, rice husk, etc., under both isothermal and non-isothermal conditions. The pyrolysis was simulated over the temperature range of 500–2400 K for isothermal process and for heating rate range of 25–165 K/s under non-isothermal conditions to assess the maximum pyrolysis rate of virgin biomass in both cases. Results revealed that by increasing the temperature, the pyrolysis rate was enhanced. However, after a certain higher temperature, the pyrolysis rate was diminished which could be due to the destruction of the active sites of char. Conversely, a decrease in the optimum pyrolysis rate was noted with increasing reaction order of the virgin biomass. Although each lignocellulosic material attained its maximum pyrolysis rate at the optimum conditions of 1071 K and 31 K/s for isothermal and non-isothermal conditions, respectively, but under these conditions, only wood sawdust exhibited complete thermal utilization and achieved final concentrations of 0.000154 and 0.001238 under non-isothermal and isothermal conditions, respectively.Rivers, Ports, Waterways and Dredging Engineerin

Lisān al-Mīzān is a distinguished and widely discussed work in the science of Asmāʾ al-Rijāl (the study of narrators), authored by the eminent scholar Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī (may Allah have mercy on him). This article aims to introduce this seminal book, examine its methodology and stylistic features, and provide a detailed account of its structure and approach to assessing narrators. It also explores the manuscript and printed versions, deciphers the symbols and annotations used by the author, and highlights the foundational principles employed in evaluating narrators. The study identifies instances where the author deviated from his established principles, offering clarifications for specific terms and contexts when necessary. Additionally, the reasoning behind the book's title, its primary sources and references, and potential areas for further refinement are thoroughly discussed. By addressing these facets, the article seeks to make the study of Lisān al-Mīzān more accessible and engaging. In conclusion, the article aspires to leave no dimension of Lisān al-Mīzān unexplored, fostering a deeper appreciation for the work and equipping readers with the tools to navigate its content with ease and enthusiasm

Thrombus-in-Transit: Changing the Diagnosis from Acute Coronary Syndrome to Pulmonary Embolism
Pulmonary embolism is a disease entity that is under diagnosed, frequently overlooked,is often misdiagnosed and it is potentially fatal. A high index of clinical suspicion is required for correct diagnosis and timely intervention. To witness the event of embolism is extremely rare and is virtually confirmatory of the diagnosis. Here we present a case of a 56 years old male who was admitted to the emergency department with the diagnosis of Non-ST elevation myocardial infarction; the diagnosis was subsequently changed to pulmonary embolism when a thrombus-in-transit was witnessed on transthoracic echocardiograph

A critical analysis of Mudarabah & a new approach to equity financing in Islamic finance
Financial intermediation serves a valuable purpose, but it can also be structured using equity modes of financing. This can relieve the financee and increase diversity of entrepreneurial undertakings as in debt based commercial financing, there is little room for diversity with obligatory and stipulated servicing of debt. Using Islamic equity modes of financing poses the challenge of the agency problem and moral hazard. The extent of this agency problem in Mudarabah and its impact on economic payoffs between counterparties is analyzed in this study with a simulation model. Based on review of alternate solutions proposed, the author presents two possible covenants which could make Mudarabah mode of financing more acceptable and widely usable in financial intermediation.
