Full text linkThe extensive and nearly unknown work of José Antonio Navarrete (Caracas, 1749-1814) allows us to discover the earliest predecessor of mini-fiction in Venezuela. His texts, synopses and comments on all the books read by the Friar two hundred years ago are not only a reminiscence of Borges, but are an example of the “reader\u27s mini-fictions.” This article analyzes Navarrete\u27s life and work and how literary influences still prevail in different centuries and people who have never metLa vasta y casi desconocida obra del fraile José Antonio Navarrete (Caracas, 1749-1814), nos permite descubrir al más antiguo antecesor de la minificción venezolana. Sus textos, resúmenes y comentarios sobre todos los libros leídos por el fraile hace doscientos años, recuerdan no sólo a Borges, sino son un ejemplo de las “minificciones de lector”. En este artículo se analiza la vida y obra de Navarrete y cómo las influencias literarias existen aún en siglos diferentes y por personajes que nunca se conocieron.

Building safer public spaces: Exploring gender difference in the perception of safety in public space through urban design interventions
Full text linkConcern around personal safety is a significant factor in constraining women's access to and use of public space. One strategy presented to address this involves altering the design of built environments. However, tension and controversy surround these arguments in the literature on safety perception in public space. This study seeks to explore whether the presence of three design interventions commonly cited in the literature act to enhance or reduce perceptions of safety in public space, focusing on women's experiences in particular. Three design interventions are examined: public toilets, solid walls, and graffiti removal. To test these interventions, an image-based randomised control trial with 104 participants was conducted in 2018 in London (UK). A series of control and treatment images simulating each design intervention was viewed and ranked by participants according to perceived safety. The findings of this study suggest that: the presence of public toilets does not affect perceived safety; eliminating graffiti has a weak significant impact on perceived safety; and removing solid walls leads to significant improvements of perceptions of safety, with the effect being stronger for women. These results suggest that to maximise investment effectiveness, urban design and planning policies that aim to increase perceptions of safety should be evidence-based, and need to integrate a gendered perspective. The presented technique could support urban design processes by examining the safety-enhancement impact of proposed public space interventions prior to their being rolled out

A “Financialised Production of Space”. Analysing Real Estate Investment Funds through Lefebvre’s Spatial Triad
No full textThis research contributes to gaining a deeper understanding of the nature of the financialization of the built environment from a spatial dimension. Empirical studies have predominantly used a quantitative approach to explore these processes. In contrast, this article seeks a better understanding of the ways in which financial institutions conceive of and represent space. Through the lens of Lefebvre’s spatial triad, we analyse in-depth interviews with key high-level investment fund managers, along with the annual reports of three investment funds operating in Santiago, Chile. Our thematic analysis reveals a potential “financialised production of space” and indicates that data can be classified into three distinct categories: commodification of the material space, codification of the representation of space and, the subjectification of the representational space. The study concludes that investment funds construct financial spatial narratives, through which space is disembodied and conceived as a commodity, represented in the form of pictures and codes
