Creating a Guidebook promoting Education for Sustainability and steering children to become Ecologically Intelligent

    No full text
The purpose of this functional thesis is to introduce the concept of education for sustainable development and to steer children on the path to becoming ecologically intelligent, by creating a guidebook of activities in cooperation with an English language kindergarten located in Espoo. The aim is to instill habits and values reinforcing sustainability in children. Education can help in developing resilience and skills to support children in becoming active and responsible citizens who can contribute towards a healthy and sustainable living. The theoretical framework of this thesis consists of a discussion about Early Childhood Education and Care in Finland, Social pedagogy, and Eco-pedagogy. All three have holistic learning, participation, interaction, and providing positive experiences to the children as a common theme. They also have guidelines supporting sustainable and healthy living. Social pedagogy follows a 'head, heart, and hand' approach, whereas Eco-pedagogy follows the 'doing together' approach. In addition, the principles of transformative education were the main guiding force behind designing activities for the children. The activities consist of handicrafts, environmental education, and reading-relevant literature. It also includes activities supporting circular economy and phenomenon-based learning. Finally, the concept of ecological intelligence and education for sustainability in early child-hood education are analyzed. Education in early childhood can be used as the first step to introduce ecological intelligence by using two approaches – habituation through daily activities and through real applications in the surrounding environment. The implementation included three activities and designing the guidebook, that was done in collaboration with the kindergarten staff. They evaluated the guidebook and gave positive feedback about its utility in a kindergarten, which indicated that I was successful in achieving the goals set for this thesis. Keywords: Education for sustainable development, early childhood, ecological intelligence, environment

Systems for fractional sampling rate conversion

    No full text
This thesis treats the design of decimation filters for fractional sampling rate conversion system, applicable for Software Radio (SR). We first present a general introduction of Software Radio technology along with the brief description of radio system architecture, multirate techniques, and programmable logic devices (PLDs). Then, the basic principles of Sampling Rate Conversion (SRC) is presented, including various methods for decimation and their impacts on the filter complexity. Further, a review of the Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters has been done, along with the methods of rounding and sharpening for efficient filter design. The raising technique, block filtering and time varying polyphase structures are also revised. Overview of existing sampling rate conversion filters has been presented, which includes Cascaded Integrated Comb (CIC) filter, Polynomial filter and Time Varying CIC filter. Using multirate techniques and polyphase representation, a simple method of designing fractional sampling rate conversion system based on the Interpolated Finite Impulse Response (IFIR) filter has been proposed. Finally, the proposed algorithm is simulated in MATLAB and implemented in the SPARTAN 3 family of the Xilinx’s Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) using project navigator Xilinx ISE 8.2i. The input and output of the implemented structure is verified in Symphony EDA Sonata 3.1. All the proposed MATLAB functions and VHDL programs are included in Appendix.

China’s struggle for hegemony in a multiplex world order: the case of South Asia

    No full text
A Multiplex world order, where multiple state and non-state actors shape the rules of governance in culturally diverse ways, differs significantly from a hegemonic world order, shaped by the uniform, single narrative emanating from one dominant power. Naina Singh traces recent Chinese ambitions to attain material and ideological hegemony in the geo-strategically important region of South Asia, but, she argues, that the emerging regional order bears signs of a multiplex condition

Extra-judicial killings in India a crisis of justice, faith and public morality?

    No full text
This post discusses extrajudicial killings in India, the consequent legal challenges they create, and the increasing normalisation of such encounters through pop culture and public acclamation. Gauri Kumar and Naina Bhargava highlight these arguments using specific examples, and present the existing response of the Supreme Court of India regarding extrajudicial killings

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Opportunities and Challenges of establishing Open Access Repositories: A case study of OpenMED@NIC

    No full text
National Informatics Centre had established a subject repository in May 2005. It is meant for Medical and Allied Sciences and named as OpenMED@NIC http://openmed.nic.in. It has MeSH® based subject categorization and this makes it one of its own kind. Taking OpenMED@NIC as a case – this paper discusses key issues in establishing and maintaining an open access repository. Librarians and information science professionals can play active role in providing access and exposure to quality research and academic content generated in their institutions. Mature and standard open sources softwares are now available for setting up repositories. Libraries can install one of these on existing institutional or library servers to setup repositories. However to ensure better access and faster response time dedicated hardware and reliable connectivity would be required. Librarians and information science professional can play important role in exposing intellectual content produced by their organizations. They can take of various roles like – generating awareness among staff, researchers and students about benefits of self arching in institutional or subject repositories; training them in uploading their articles and other documents in such repositories; acting as meta-data editors and repositories managers. Establishing a repository, administrating and inviting authors to deposit their articles and other works in it is golden opportunity available to librarians and information science professionals. This opportunity should be grabbed with open hands

    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

ABSTRACT PERCEPTIONS OF MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT SERVICES AMONG SOUTH ASIAN STUDENTS Naina Richards, Ed.D. Department of Counseling and Higher Education Northern Illinois University, 2023 Katy Jaekel, Director This qualitative research study aimed to identify stigmas surrounding mental health that influenced South Asian graduate students’ help-seeking behavior while enrolled in higher education. Findings from this study suggest that cultural stigmas associated with mental illness foster concerning attitudes among South Asian students that equate mental illness with weakness and thus, promote minimization of personal mental struggles to avoid negative labeling and judgement. Recommendations from this study encourage university student support services to accept and understand the barriers faced by South Asian students in seeking mental health support. With the evolving demographics of student populations including the growing number of South Asian students on college campuses, it is critical for universities to explore innovative and non-traditional approaches to offer support and cultivate a sense of belonging within all the diverse student groups it serves
