    Arne Naess: A Tragic Ecosophy

    No full text
Arne Naess was one of the first philosopher who try to find out a way to resolve the ecological crisis through philosophy. By analysing some of the main point of Naess‘ philosophy, the essay shows that his main interest was to legitimize the ecological movement. Philosophy becomes a political instrument and assumes a tragical character, because it takes on an impossible project. For Naess philosophy should provide a new total view to change man‘s attitude to nature. This analysis could help us to find out some critical points of a philosophy that try to be useful in the ecological crisis

Ethics and Value in Naess’ Ecophilosophy

    No full text
It appears that Naess thought his ecophilosophy could do without ethics. What made him think so? Since Naess was largely implicit about his metaethical views, I turn to Warwick Fox’ elaborate presentation of Naess’ ecophilosophy to find an answer. Doing so allows me to investigate what is insufficiently accounted for in Naess’ ecophilosophy, namely its ontological presuppositions. To be philosophically sound, Naess’ criticisms of ethics need to question the taboo against the so-called naturalistic fallacy, a commonplace in ethical theories since Hume. I argue that a realist notion of value—understood as a property of nature, operative in nature—provides ecophilosophy with a sorely needed ontological foundation.</jats:p

    No full text
Naess’s ecosophical project is basically distinguished in relation to the general environmental philosophical debate and to the deep ecology movement. Ecosophy T is outlined first through the analysis of its ontological premisses. The conceptual structure of the foundations of the ethics of self-realization and identification with the natural world is then brought to light. Finally, Naess’s references to the Buddhist philosophy are acknowledged within the frame of a critical concept of philosophical comparison, and a detailed analogy is proposed between ecosophy and some basic aspects of the pan-buddhist philosophy of nature, with a special accent on the anattā (not-self) doctrine.ope

This article aims to explain on Arne Naess’ notion of relation between religion and nature. For Naess, relation between religion and nature has double face. On the one hand, religion is a good source for human being in understanding nature and himself. Religion teaches man how to creates a mutual relation with nature. On the other hand, religion is also the source of ecological crisis since through biblical interpretation which is anthropological oriented gives man knowledge and power to control even exploits nature wantonly. Therefore, to stop ecological crisis we need to shift our anthropological interpretation to an ecological interpretation. Using descriptive and analysis method, this study hopes to contribute on understanding of Naess’ concept on relation between religion and nature

    No full text
