Combating problems related to library software in higher education institutions of Pakistan: an analysis of focus groups

    No full text
The absence of standard library software is one of the main hinderance in the effective automation of libraries of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) of Pakistan. A review of the literature does not provide the actual requirements of the libraries in Pakistan related to library software and highlights the absence of library software selection criteria. This paper explores the opinion of the experts about the current status of library software, problems faced by the libraries and needs relevant to library software in order to suggest a sustainable solution for the automation of the libraries of HEIs of Pakistan. This study was conducted using qualitative approach and three focus groups were conducted in Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi. The participants of all three focus groups comprised librarians from HEIs, Library and Information Science (LIS) experts with experience in designing and implementing library software, LIS educators with experience of teaching library automation and computer science professionals having experience with library software. A purposive sampling was made in this regard. A discussion guide was prepared on the basis of literature review and expert opinions. Data were analyzed qualitatively. The analysis of focus groups revealed that there was a shortage of library software and the libraries of HEIs were still in the process of automation. Few libraries were using standard software but most of the libraries had implemented cataloguing module only. The non-availability of standard library software, regional languages, lack of awareness, lack of funds and lack of vision in the top management of HEIs were the common problems causing hinderance in the effective automation of the libraries. The experts suggested formulation of a consortium under the umbrella of HEC that takes the resposibility of development and distribution of the software

Efforts of the sub-continental scholars in spread of Arabic language and Islamic sciences beg no description. Siddique Hasan Khan Qinnoji is one of them. He enjoys a very special status among the local scholars who wrote in Arabic language. He is a prolific writer of the 13th century A.H. He not only wrote books on religious topics but also on Arabic linguistics. This article is an analytical study of his three books on linguistics namely: Al-Bulgha, Laff al-Qumaat and Al-Alam al-Khifaaq. Qinnouji’s views on various topics such as: Ishtiqaaq, Naht, Mu’arrab, Dakheel, Taraduf and Ishtiraak have been discussed in the article in light of his books

Inorganic carbon is overlooked in global soil carbon research: A bibliometric analysis

Soils are a major player in the global carbon (C) cycle and climate change by functioning as a sink or a source of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). The largest terrestrial C reservoir in soils comprises two main pools: organic (SOC) and inorganic C (SIC), each having distinct fates and functions but with a large disparity in global research attention. This study quantified global soil C research trends and the proportional focus on SOC and SIC pools based on a bibliometric analysis and raise the importance of SIC pools fully underrepresented in research, applications, and modeling. Studies on soil C pools started in 1905 and has produced over 47,000 publications (>1.7 million citations). Although the global C stocks down to 2 m depth are nearly the same for SOC and SIC, the research has dominantly examined SOC (>96 % of publications and citations) with a minimal share on SIC (<4%). Approximately 40 % of the soil C research was related to climate change. Despite poor coverage and publications, the climate change-related research impact (citations per document) of SIC studies was higher than that of SOC. Mineral associated organic carbon, machine learning, soil health, and biochar were the recent top trend topics for SOC research (2020–2023), whereas digital soil mapping, soil properties, soil acidification, and calcite were recent top trend topics for SIC. SOC research was contributed by 151 countries compared to 88 for SIC. As assessed by publications, soil C research was mainly concentrated in a few countries, with only 9 countries accounting for 70 % of the research. China and the USA were the major producers (45 %), collaborators (37 %), and funders of soil C research. SIC is a long-lived soil C pool with a turnover rate (leaching and recrystallization) of more than 1000 years in natural ecosystems, but intensive agricultural practices have accelerated SIC losses, making SIC an important player in global C cycle and climate change. The lack of attention and investment towards SIC research could jeopardize the ongoing efforts to mitigate climate change impacts to meet the 1.5–2.0 °C targets under the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015. This bibliographic study calls to expand the research focus on SIC and including SIC fluxes in C budgets and models, without which the representation of the global C cycle is incomplete

SUMMARISATION: Syed Mustafa Siraj, a renowned Bengali author, was known for his captivating works, including 'Neel Ghorer Nati' and 'Aleek Manush'. He was a prominent figure in music and later pursued a career in music. Siraj's short story, "Bharat Varsha," was included in a Bangla textbook for students of the West Bengal Council for Higher Secondary Education during a time of deep-seated division in India. The story depicts a marketplace in a rural settlement, surrounded by bamboo and surrounded by a brick kiln. The market is a symbol of resistance against communism and the impact of untimely rainfall on agricultural yields. In a hamlet, people engage in unrestricted behavior, often leading to intense discussions and physical altercations. During winter, they gather near an oven to raise their body temperatures and discuss various topics. The tea vendor, who earns revenue from selling tea, maintains a sense of assurance over remuneration from the locals. One day, an elderly woman, known for her wrinkles and aging appearance, is found motionless and discarded in the riverbed. The villagers, concerned about her fate, decide to transport her to the nearby police station, knowing her decomposition will determine her fate. The decomposing cadaver remains immobile in the sunlight, and the villagers contemplate the arrival of a ravenous vulture swarm.A group of Hindus and Mohammedans recite rituals in Arabic while transporting a corpse from a nearby region. The Hindus, who abandoned the corpse, were enraged and decided to interment her in a cemetery. Rival factions vying for control of the gurney began, with spectators tossing profanities and brandishing swords and pikes. The government watchman tried to avert the conflict, but his words went unnoticed. Unbeknownst to everyone, the deceased corpse trembled and a trembling woman appeared. The bewildered guardian proclaimed, "Burima, you were not dead!" The woman, enraged, questioned her beliefs and demanded to leave before time ran out. The enraged woman gathered her possessions and disappeared, never to be re-observed.THIS DATASET IS ARCHIVED AT DANS/EASY, BUT NOT ACCESSIBLE HERE. The main objectives of this study were to investigate the use of print and electronic journals by the faculty members at GC University Lahore (GCU) and to reveal problems which are faced by the faculty members while using journals at GCU. A quantitative survey method was used and the population of the study was all faculty members of GCU. After a comprehensive review of literature, a questionnaire was designed for data collection. Findings of the study reveal that majority of the participants was aware of the basics of Internet. Most of the respondents had awareness with the usage and utilization of print and electronic journals. Most of the respondents used Internet for exploring journals. Majority of the respondents used electronic journals on daily basis. Most of the faculty members were actively engaged in browsing online journals. In many cases, respondents faced the problem of accessing the required journals. They faced the barrier of accessing back volumes of print journals. Most of the respondents could not get subscription of print journals. Many respondents were unfamiliar with techniques to access e journals. Most of the respondents couldn’t get off campus access of electronic journals. Findings and recommendations of this study can be a helpful source for library practitioners, educationists, organizational heads, HEC Pakistan, planners, policy makers and decision-making bodies for increasing usage of journals by the faculty members of the universities
