Exploring the Potential of Scholarship to Drive Teaching Innovation
Over the last 20 years, universities have diversified their workforce, employing a large number of academic staff on teaching and scholarship contracts. In this chapter, we’ll explore how Scholarship is defined, recognised, rewarded, supported and developed with teaching staff in UK’s research-intensive institutions using a two-phase study incorporating both a questionnaire and focus group. Through analysis of the results of the survey, we explore gaps in experience and develop in response a model which addresses these issues and seeks a new holistic definition of academic life in research-intensive institutions. This model recommends, following Boyer, the reclamation of the word Scholarship to underpin all academic work at universities and to be used by universities to underpin how they support staff to meet universities’ strategic goals and offers advice to you as a potential programme leads on how you can utilise the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) as a mechanism to drive innovation and evolution in the curriculum
Letter from Hayao (Sam) Chuman to the American Friends Service Committee
A letter from Hayao (Sam) Chuman to the American Friends Service Committee, donating a portion of his redress check from the U.S. government to the Committee. The Chuman (Hayao "Sam" and Toshiko) Papers documents the World War II experiences of Hayao "Sam" and Toshiko Chuman, who were Kibei Nisei born in the United States but grew up and completed school in Japan, and then returned to the U.S. prior to the war. It chronicles the Chuman's incarceration from the Santa Anita Assembly Center, through Jerome, Rohwer, Tule Lake camps, and the Santa Fe and Crystal City internment camps as well as their struggle for restoring their U.S. citizenships in the 1960s. The digital collection consists of mostly textual material, including correspondence, affidavits, incarceration camp records, lease agreements, financial documents, receipts, pamphlets, and booklets
Letter from Hayao (Sam) Chuman to Earl Warren and "Attorney General Clark"
A letter from Hayao (Sam) Chuman to Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Earl Warren and "Attorney General Clark". The letter is a request to regain his citizenship after renouncing his U.S. citizenship and requesting repatriation to Japan during his time incarcerated in World War II.The Chuman (Hayao "Sam" and Toshiko) Papers documents the World War II experiences of Hayao "Sam" and Toshiko Chuman, who were Kibei Nisei born in the United States but grew up and completed school in Japan, and then returned to the U.S. prior to the war. Sam "Kangaroo"
abstract: Sam left Sudan when he was six years old. He also witnessed many people die when they tried to cross the Gilo river.
“Lost Boys Found” is an ongoing, interdisciplinary project that is collecting, recording and archiving the oral histories of the Lost Boys/Girls of Sudan. The collection is a work-in-progress, seeking to record the oral history of as many Lost Boys/Girls as are willing, and will be used in a future book.Age: 23Region: Upper Nile (Bor)This picture and bio was donated to the "Lost Boys Found" oral history project from The Arizona Lost Boys Cente
Cerebral oximetry in cardiac arrest: a potential role but with limitations
In patients with cardiac arrest (CA) near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) enables non-invasive monitoring of the regional haemoglobin oxygen saturation in the brain (rSO2) and has emerged as a real time indicator of oxygen delivery to the brain which could be used to optimise cerebral oxygenation during and after cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Unlike arterial pulse oximetry, rSO2 can still be measured when blood flow is nonpulsatile or even absent, enabling NIRS to be used during CA.
Higher rSO2 values during CPR are associated with significantly higher rates of return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). However, there is a wide overlap of rSO2 values between ROSC and no-ROSC patients. In patients with in-hospital CA (IHCA) a 25% rSO2 cut-off predicted no ROSC with 100[94-100]% specificity, and 13[8-21]% sensitivity. In addition, time with rSO2 >50% during CPR best predicted favourable neurological outcome after resuscitation (cerebral performance category 1-2), suggesting that rSO2 may reflect the quality of cerebral oxygenation and perfusion during CPR.
In patients who are comatose after resuscitation from CA, rSO2 has been used to detect the optimal mean arterial pressure (MAP) as the one that optimises cerebral perfusion. In clinical studies, the time spent below the optimal MAP was associated with a lower likelihood of survival (OR 0.97 [0.96:0.99]. p=0.02).
Further research is required to determine if cerebral oximetry is of real value in resuscitation but based on current evidence it is not ready for routine clinical use

Izvori informacija u dostupnim EBSCO bazama podataka za istraživanja u visokom školstvu u Srbiji = Academic research in Serbia and available database resources
Universities in Serbia have access to large amounts of quality information through online full text databases. Specific details regarding the world’s two most comprehensive full text research data-bases, Academic Search Premier and Business Source Premier are provided. The paper examines which databases are strongest in each discipline, and covers issues such as the availability of journals most-cited, full text formats, peer-review status, embargo periods, backfills, and other important facets. Additional information depicts reasons for tremendous increase in the availability of information in the Serbia, and the value that these resources bring to researchers in universities
Out with the Old
This week on War News Radio, we learn about the Persian New Year, a holiday that has been celebrated for over 3000 years. Jared Nolan and Gabriel Ramirez report.
Next, we hear about attempts to restore Iraq’s national museum, which was looted during the 2003 invasion. Clare Kobasa and Sam Hirshman have the story.
Finally, we hear from a combat medic about his experiences in Iraq. Jared Nolan has more.
