Trident Room Podcast Episode 1: Dr. Frank Narducci, Quantum Physics and the Navy [audio]
The Trident Room Podcast officially started broadcasting in the summer of 2020. It was created by an HSI/OR student who wanted to capture conversations he was having with the impressive array of faculty, students, and staff roaming the halls of NPS. Podcasting provides a direct and unfettered connection with listeners, and he wanted to bring that same kind of informative, yet intimate exchange to the Naval Postgraduate School community.Dr. Frank Narducci discusses family, having a physicist for a father, and his personal passion of incorporating quantum physics into Navy practices. The Trident Room Podcast was developed with support provided by the Naval Postgraduate School Alumni Association and Foundation (NPSAAF)

A general model for fair and explainable recommendation in the loan domain
Recommender systems have been widely used in the Financial Services domain and can play a crucial role in personal loan comparison platforms. However, the use of AI in this domain has brought to light many opportunities as well as new ethical and legal risks. The customers can trust the suggestions of these systems only if the recommendation process is Interpretable, Understandable, and Fair for the end-user. Since products offered within the banking sector are usually of an intangible nature, customer trust perception is crucial to maintain a long-standing relationship and ensure customer loyalty. To this end, in this paper, we propose a model for generating natural language and counterfactual explanations for a loan recommender system with the aim of providing fairer and more transparent suggestions
A semantic-based methodology for digital forensics analysis
Nowadays, more than ever, digital forensics activities are involved in any criminal, civil or military investigation and represent a fundamental tool to support cyber-security. Investigators use a variety of techniques and proprietary software forensics applications to examine the copy of digital devices, searching hidden, deleted, encrypted, or damaged files or folders. Any evidence found is carefully analysed and documented in a “finding report” in preparation for legal proceedings that involve discovery, depositions, or actual litigation. The aim is to discover and analyse patterns of fraudulent activities. In this work, a new methodology is proposed to support investigators during the analysis process, correlating evidence found through different forensics tools. The methodology was implemented through a system able to add semantic assertion to data generated by forensics tools during extraction processes. These assertions enable more effective access to relevant information and enhanced retrieval and reasoning capabilities
Distributed quantum metrology with a single squeezed-vacuum source
We propose an interferometric scheme for the estimation of a linear combination with non-negative weights of an arbitrary number M > 1 of unknown phase delays, distributed across an M-channel linear optical network, with Heisenberg-limited sensitivity. This is achieved without the need of any sources of photon-number or entangled states, photon-number-resolving detectors, or auxiliary interferometric channels. Indeed, the proposed protocol remarkably relies upon a single squeezed-state source, an antisqueezing operation at the interferometer output, and on-off photodetectors
