This study investigates mental health to enhance understanding of anxiety, depression and stress, providing valuable insights into classifying symptoms of mental health problems and contributing to the existing body of knowledge in UiTM Seremban 3. Mental health problems are one of diseases that affect the lifestyle of students and they face difficulty to detect their mental health problems. Counselor of UiTM Seremban 3 have been using DASS-21 to detect and classify mental health problems. However, result from the DASS-21 is not precise. Therefore, a study was done to identify symptoms that affect a student’s mental health problems and thus develop model of classifying mental health problems among students by using Fuzzy Inference System (FIS). The model of FIS has been developed by using 5 steps. The steps are defined input and output variables, set the membership function, setup the rule base, fuzzification and defuzzification. The result from the developed model is found to be more plausible compared to result from the DASS-21 where the percentage error from all the symptoms is less than 7%. Comparison of the level of mental health problems among students from the three main faculties in UiTM Seremban 3 through this model show that student from Faculty of Sport Science Recreation (FSR) endure the highest level of all mental health problems covered in this study

Intoxication and self-defence : a comparative study of principles of English law and Shari'ah

    No full text
The study is based upon an analysis of the general principles of criminal liability in English law and Shari 'ah. It is hoped that it may provide a valid basis for discussion of the future development of criminal law. The relationship between law and society is an organic one and this relationship in Shari'ah is based on revelatory text of precepts, law, and admonitions. Shari'ah is an essential part of faith of every Muslim; a sound knowledge of its principles not only gives him a sense of inner fulfilment but enables him to order his life according to the dictates of his religion. On the other hand, in English law, religious beliefs and private morality might be viewed as not a matter for law. Religion is in that context generally conceived as a spiritual sphere of supra-human connotation distinct from law, which is basically a secular concern. Both the systems of law under consideration are different in their sources and nature. English law, being a positive law, finds its source in legislation and other recognised sources. Shari 'ah is a divine ordinance imposed upon people without having a freedom of choice and it has its roots in its primary sources, the Holy Qur'an, and the Sunnah. However, the revelatory nature of Shari'ah does not render it entirely inflexible and immutable. The finality of authoritative legal texts is confined only to a limited number of injunctions in the primary sources. The secondary sources provide flexibility to meet the changing requirements of society. A legal system should strike a fair balance between flexibility and inflexibility of legal rules. A very flexible system of law may lead to inconsistencies, illogicalities and at the same time may be subject to abuse by judges while a rigid system, which leaves no room for judicial discretion is likely to lead to injustice in certain cases. It is submitted that the very flexible nature of English law has left it full of inconsistencies and illogicalities, despite the appropriate use of judicial discretion. The research offers a general view of modern thinking about the theoretical foundations and methodology of Shari'ah Shari 'ah recognises a variety of sources and methods from which a rule of law might be derived. Part-I of the thesis discusses the evolving principles of Islamic jurisprudence from their rudimentary sources. The specific relationship between socio-religious reality and the production of theoretical legal discourse is illustrated in Part-11 and III while dealing with the problem of intoxication and private defence in society. It suggests that Shari'ah provides a framework in which the complex and sometimes competing needs of an individual and society can be fairly apportioned. The research will demonstrate that there is a well developed system of criminal law in Shari'ah that can be compared with the most developed and civilised criminal law of the contemporary world, for example, English criminal law. In order to compare the compatibility of both the legal systems, the approaches of both towards the problems of intoxication and self-defence have been taken as a parameter. Though Shari 'ah provisions seem to be predominantly prescriptive as compared to English criminal law, the comparison will show that it can provide practical solutions to problems faced by human society of any age. Shari 'ah being a revealed law is proactive in its nature. It takes action to cause changes and not only react to a change when it happens. This particular feature can be felt while dealing with the problem of intoxication. English criminal law, on the other hand, being a positive law bears the characteristics of a reactive law. It reacts to events or changes rather than acting first to cause change or prevent something. Another major difference between the two legal systems might be that English criminal law has passed through many evolutionary phases and reached at the present stage through the efforts of the political power and the state; whereas, Muslim states and governments throughout the centuries neither had a hand in the development of Islamic jurisprudence nor in the training and certification of jurists or jurisconsults whose task it was to formulate the law. History suggests that using the combined forces of religion, morality and law Shari'ah has effectively eradicated social evils and created a peaceful environment for human coexistence, where every one can enjoy his rights without a fear of infringement by the others. In cases of infringement of such rights, the offender shall be liable to severe punishments. The principles of criminal liability are on a par with the corresponding principles of the English criminal law. While protecting the rights of the victim of the crime, Shari'ah does not ignore the rights of the offender for fair trail, impartial justice and liability for punishment proportional to the offence committed by him. At the same time it recognises excuse and justification defences under appropriate circumstances, as it will be evident while comparing the defences of intoxication and self-defence with the same in English criminal law. The study reveals that there are similarities and differences between English law and Shari'ah when considering the issue of crime and criminal liability. However, this may be considered as normal phenomenon of comparing any two different legal systems. The differences can be attributed to their sources, origin, history and nature of the social values to be protected. Similarities can be ascribed to zeal for social justice and stability. The study of differences and similarities will provide an opportunity to illuminate our understanding of law and the process of its development. As both the systems have their own methodology to tackle legal issues, a different approach to the similar problem will provide a fresh insight leading to revitalised solutions. It will also be helpful to understand the methodology and the legal reasoning of both the systems leading towards a better understanding of law in general and at the same time providing efficient means for improvement

Problematika Haji dan Umrah Berulang Kali Menurut Ali Mustafa Yaqub dalam Perspektif Fikih Islam: The Problems of Repeated Hajj and Umrah According to Ali Mustafa Yaqub in the Perspective of Islamic Jurisprudence

    No full text
This research aims to discuss the problems of repeated Hajj and Umrah according to Ali Mustafa Yaqub from the perspective of Islamic jurisprudence. This research includes library research with a normative and methodological approach. The existing data was collected then processed and analyzed using content analysis and comparative analysis methods. The results of the research show that Ali Mustafa Yaqub's opinion in forbidding or disallowing Hajj and Umrah is repeatedly different from what is understood by fiqh scholars. The Prophet's deeds. who only performs Hajj once and performs Umrah four times not because he hates this act, but because of several other reasons behind it. The argument that social worship is more important than the Sunnah Hajj and Umrah is also inappropriate because it is only based on a textual understanding of the propositions. Every Muslim may perform the Hajj or Umrah whenever he is able to do it while taking into account the advantages and disadvantages that may occur during the journey, such as when he does not have the physical strength or funds, the atmosphere is not conducive, or for other reasons that cause someone not to be able to go at that time

Title: Study of Wetting Phenomenon During Cooling of Curved Surfaces Using Impinging Water Jets, Author: Muhammad Akmal, Location: ThodeWetting phenomenon during cooling of hot cylindrical specimens using Impinging Jet of water has been studied. Effect of jet velocity, jet diameter, water temperature, specimen surface temperature and surface curvature on propagation of wetting front has been analyzed. Propagation of wetting front correlated well with power function of time. Experiments were conducted at specimen surface temperatures of 250, 500 and 800°C. Water temperatures of 20, 50 and 70 or 75 or 80°C were employed with Jet velocities of 5 and 7.75m/sec. Jet diameters of 3mm and 4mm were utilized during experiments. Propagation of wetting front strongly depends upon water temperature. Wetting front grows faster at low water temperature and high jet velocities. For constant water temperature, growth of wetting front is high with high jet velocities. Velocity of wetting front increases with jet diameter of 4mm when compared with that of 3mm due to increase in mass flow. The influence of jet diameter is greater for low water temperature, low surface temperature and high jet velocities. Effect of jet velocity and degree of subcooling on constant "a" and exponent "n" of the power relation are studied. Constant "a" is found to be linear function of jet velocity and degree of sub-cooling. Exponent "n" appears to be independent of jet velocity but weekly dependent on degree of sub-cooling. Propagation of wetting front with time was analyzed in comparison with the transient temperature drop of material for different thermocouples embedded at stream wise locations within specimen at a distance of 1mm from surface. Temperature readings were used to predict the propagation of wetting front, which was found to be valid for a distance of 10mm from impingement point. Effect of surface curvature was analyzed by comparing the results of present study with those reported by previous researchers. Surface curvature was found to have significant impact on propagation of wetting front.ThesisMaster of Applied Science (MASc

Pakistan’s Agricultural Development since Independence: Intertemporal Trends and Explanations

    No full text
The main objective of this paper has been to review Pakistan’s historical experience in agricultural development in terms of growth, income distribution, and rural poverty. While the long-term growth rates between 1949-50 and 1994-95 were satisfactory, the variations around the average have been rather too large over the various decades. Beginning with a stagnating sector of the 1950s, agriculture witnessed record growth rates during the Sixties. This was followed by the lowest growth rates of the early Seventies, and acceleration in the second half of the Seventies. The experience since 1979-80 has been mixed, but the growth rates have been rather low through the Eighties and the Nineties. The trends in income distribution and poverty varied directly in relation to the agricultural growth rates, especially when they were in excess of the threshold level of 4.5–5.0 percent per annum. In general, a growth rate of 5.0 percent or higher has induced positive changes in income distribution and poverty. In view of this positive association, the pursuit of a high growth policy in agriculture should guide Pakistan’s future development strategy. The efficiency of resource use, a greater dependence on modern technologies, and a minimisation of government intervention in the market mechanism are the essential pillars of the high growth strategy.

Growth of Livestock Production in Pakistan: An Analysis

    No full text
Agriculture is the backbone and single largest sector of Pakistan’s economy as its contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) exceeded 25.3 percent during 1997-98. Crops, livestock, fishing and forestry sub-sectors being its main components, only crop and livestock sub-sectors are of critical importance. They accounted for 59.6 and 36.2 percent of the sector’s output respectively. Because of the ongoing process of structural transformation, agriculture’s share in the national economy is shrinking. From 39 percent of GDP in 1969-70 it has fallen to its current levels [Pakistan (1999a)]. The livestock sub-sector however has not followed suit. It has risen from 27.3 percent in 1969-70 to 36.2 percent in 1997-98. This trend in fact would be more pronounced if the national accounts did not underestimate the sub-sector’s components such as farm yard manure, dung cakes for household fuels and animal draft power. Apart from its contributions to national income, the livestock sub-sector is an active employer of thousands of landless poor and subsistence and semi-subsistence small farming families. Being a household activity, women are a special beneficiary of employment in the sub-sector. It is a major source of nourishment like milk, butter oil, eggs and meat and adds immensely to the health, nutrition and well being of rural as well as urban people. While animal fat and butter oil supplies are helpful in containing vegetable oil imports, many products of livestock origin such as wool and wool products, leather and leather made-ups and animal casings are exported and contribute significantly to hard earned foreign exchange [Ahmad, Ahmad and Chaudhry (1996)]. It follows from the above that the livestock sub-sector is likely to maintain its position as the dominant sub-sector of Pakistan’s agricultural sector or even that of the national economy for quite sometime in the future. Despite the rising and critical importance of the sub-sector, there, however, is no corresponding emphasis on analysing its achievements, problems and future prospects and likely policies to brighten these up. In view of this limitation, the present paper makes a limited attempt to study the growth process of the livestock sub-sector.

Administration of estates in Malaysia: Law and procedure. By Akmal Hidayah Halim. Selangor, Malaysia: Sweet Maxwell & Asia, 2012, pp. 221. ISBN: 9789675040849

Akmal Hidayah Halim, the author of the volume under review, has earlier published The Law of Wills and Intestacy in Malaysia (Selangor, Malaysia: International Islamic University Malaysia, 2009). Administration of Estates in Malaysia is based on the author’s Ph.D. thesis. The subject matter of this book is extremely important in the legal fraternity as it deals with property left by the deceased. There are many cases in Malaysia where the money and property left by the deceased has gone unclaimed either because the members of general public were unaware of the procedure to follow in claiming the estates or because the deceased failed to name the legal administrator of the estate upon his/her death
