[[abstract]]The allylic oxaspirocyclic products obtained have a structure very similar to naturally occurring norisoprenoid spiroethers, such as theaspiranes and vetispirane, which are known aroma components in tea and vanilla, respectively.
We have successfully synthesized oxa-spiro compounds by addition of diisobutylaluminum hydride (DIBAL) to cyclohex-2-en-1-one bearing an ester-group side chain at C-3 position. The reaction may proceed through an intermediate such as diol. Spiro [5.4] oxadecane was isolated by treating of diol with 6N HCl(aq). Under the same reaction conditions, spiro [5.5] oxaundecane, spiro [4.4] oxanonanes and spiro [5.4] oxadecane were obtained in good yields.
Then we extend this chemistry to spiro compounds containing a lactone moiety. Treatment of starting acid with either DIBAL or NaBH4 would generate allylic alcohol intermediate with an acid functionality at the C-3 position. Treatment of 6N HCl would produce an allylic cation which can undergo addition by the carboxy group to furnish spirolactone. Under the reaction conditions, 1-oxaspiro[4.5]dec-6-en-2-one, 1-oxaspiro[4.4]non-6-en-2-one, 3,4,6,7,8,8a-hexahydro-2H-chromen-2-one were obtained.

Prevalence of Urinary Schistosomiasis among School Aged Children in Bakura Local Government Area of Zamfara State Nigeria
Urinary schistosomiasis (Bilharziasis) is a parasitic disease caused by a digenic trematode called Schistosoma haematobium, and it is a water-based parasitic disease transmitted by water snails of the genus Bulinus that mainly affect children. A study was carried out to determine the prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis among school-aged children of three selected communities in Bakura LGA of Zamfara State to determine the prevalence of S. haematobium from urine samples of the pupils and to relate the prevalence of infection with socio-demographic factors such as age, sex, and water contact activities of the sampled subjects. A total of 360 urine samples comprising of 120 each from the Yargeda, Kwanar Kalgo, and Tungar Maiburtu Primary Schools were collected and examined by sedimentation technique for the presence of S. haematobium eggs. The overall percentage of infection recorded was 30.0%, while the percentages of infection obtained among the selected primary schools were 33.3%, 16.7%, and 40.0% in Yargeda, Kwanar Kalgo, and Tungar Maiburtu respectively. Male pupils recorded the highest rate of infection (44.9%) compared to female pupils (23.6%). The age group 8-11 years old had the highest infection rate (35.7%), while the age group 12-15 years had the least prevalence rate (23.5%). In relation to sources of drinking water, pupils with rivers/streams as their main sources of drinking water recorded the highest rate of infection (38.7%), whereas those using tap/bore-hole water had the least prevalence of infection (18.2%). Based on water contact activity, pupils whose water contact activity was mostly fishing had the highest rate (41.4%), while the lowest rate of infection of 18.0% was observed among pupils swimming in rivers. In all the cases, chi-square analysis showed no significant association between the rate of infection and water contact activities (P<0.01). Since infection with S. haematobium had been established in the study area, there is therefore a need for a public health campaign among pupils to adapt preventive measures with control programs for snails’ intermediate hosts
Effects of Organic Matter Amendment on Aggregate Stability of Some Agricultural Soils in Semi Arid Region of Nigeria
Soil aggregate stability is important in understanding the structural behaviour of soils. Soil aggregate stability is therefore an important index of soil productivity. The effect of chicken dung on aggregate stability of three (3) agricultural soils of Borno state namely sandy loam, sandy clay and clay soils was investigated in a laboratory experiment using a rainfall simulator. Chicken dung was added to these soils at 2% (w/w) and the aggregate sizes of 2-4 mm and 6-8 mm were prepared by sieving. These aggregate sizes were weighed and subjected to simulated rainfall for rainfall durations of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 minutes using a rainfall simulator at an intensity of 226.6 mm/hr. The aggregate stability of the three (3) soils were calculated using the wet sieving method. The result revealed that 2% chicken dung incorporation did not influence stability of sandy loam soils, but improved the stability of the structure of both sizes of sandy clay and clay soils relative to the "controls”. The degree of stability however, varied with few soil types and aggregate sizes. Aggregate size of 2-4 mm showed poor resistance to rain drop forces as the rainfall depth increases compared to the aggregate size of 6-8 mm, but both performed better than the control. This implies that smaller sized aggregates are more vulnerable to detachment and transport irrespective of soil type. Clay soil aggregates were more stable than sandy clay soil irrespective of aggregate sizes. The use of chicken dung is hereby recommended to stabilise soil against erosion hazards
Design and Performance Evaluation of a LoRaWAN-Based Communication System for Enhanced Situational Awareness in Armored Vehicles
This study presents the design and performance evaluation of a LoRaWAN-based communication system for enhancing situational awareness in armoured vehicles, with a comparative analysis against GSM networks. Performance metrics such as communication range, latency, security, GPS accuracy, data transmission speed, and power consumption were assessed under different environmental conditions, including open fields, urban areas, and forested regions. The results indicate that LoRaWAN offers a reliable alternative to GSM, particularly in environments with limited cellular infrastructure. LoRaWAN demonstrated a communication range of up to 12 km in open fields, moderate security with AES-128 encryption, and superior power efficiency, supporting up to 41.6 hours of continuous operation on a 5000mAh battery. While GSM outperformed LoRaWAN in latency (50–150 ms vs. 150–300 ms) and data transmission speed, LoRaWAN provided better performance in rural areas and secured communication through dynamic key management. These findings highlight LoRaWAN’s potential for military applications where secure, long-range, and energy-efficient communication is require
