No full text
Includes bibliographical references (p. [265]-271) and index.xx, 284 pages ;E-commerce is still a volatile industry, but each day a new enterprise pops up promising to be the next big thing. The real challenge is to understand what is involved in using the Internet as a means to building a successful business. Rather than coming up with marketing hooks and product innovations, e-Enterprise: Business Models, Architecture, and Components demystifies e-commerce and describes how a business should determine its own future by taking the next step and becoming an agile 'e-enterprise'. Faisal Hoque introduces the concept of high-level abstraction of business processes and application functionality that result in reusable business and technology components. He provides a methodology that is critical for all business leaders and technologists trying to build an enterprise on the internet

The Structures and Abundance of Transposable Elements Contributing to Genome Diversity in the Diploid and Polyploid Brassica and Musa Crops

No full text
Mobile DNA sequences - transposable elements (TEs) that amplify and move within genomes represent a high proportion of the DNA in most eukaryotes. The present study aimed to define TE nature, structure and abundance in two contrasting groups of diploid and polyploids crop genera, Brassica (dicotyledon) and Musa (monocotyledon). Rather than starting with known TE sequences, a sequence-data driven approach was used, comparing homologous and homoeologous BAC pairs. Over ~100 kb regions, any stretch of sequence was characterized that was inserted or deleted in the evolutionary time since divergence of the two BAC genomic sequences. Almost all the sequences were indeed TEs, representatives of existing and a few novel superfamilies. Polymorphisms due to activity were measured by PCR with flanking primers in 40 (Brassica) or 96 (Musa) accessions, and some families were localized on chromosomes by fluorescent in situ hybridization. Autonomous and non-autonomous TEs were found; class I retrotransposons like Copia and Gypsy (LTR) predominated in both genera, while SINEs and LINEs (Non-LTR) were abundant in Brassica genomes. Large retrotransposon derivatives (LARDs) were in both genera, with a very few terminal-repeat in miniature (TRIM) elements. Class II DNA transposons included CACTA, hAT, Harbinger, Mariner and Mutator like MITEs in Brassica, while CACTA and Mutator were uncommon in Musa. Among miniature inverted-repeat transposable elements (MITEs), Stowaway, Tourist, and Mutator-like MITEs were abundant with several novel families identified and characterized. In diploid and allopolyploid Brassica species, A- or C-genome specific elements were found while others were more active. PCR enabled accession identification and phylogenetic reconstruction in Brassica and Musa. As well as known element families, few novel types of TEs were identified, including several variable, short elements with characteristic structural features. The analysis provides insight into the nature and diversity of TEs as an important genomic component; results are useful for genome annotation and understanding evolution and variation within these crops and the associated pool of wild germplasm

Essays on the post-9/11 labor markets for "Muslims" in the West --: evidence from the US and the UK

No full text
Theories of both statistical and prejudiced discrimination predict adverse effects of terrorist events on workers who are demographically similar to terrorists. Using a difference-in-differences framework, this paper assesses the impact of the 9/11 attacks in the US and of the July 2005 bombings in Britain. In the US, the outcomes worsened for those with nativity profiles closer to the terrorists'. The author finds a relative decrease in employment of very young (ages 16 to 25) target-group men associated with 9/11 in the US. A similar decrease in employment of these very young "Muslims" living in the UK is also found after 9/11 and again after the bombings in London in July 2005.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references

Faisal Tehrani is among the new generation of prolific and active authors today. His works show distinct uniqueness in the textual and contextual aspects in terms of the changes in the flow, themes, problems and thoughts that come into being in producing his works. Accordingly, this study aims to analyze the development of his identity in his selected novels. Throughout his creative production, he has produced various teen and mature novels to effectively communicate his ideas, questions, problems, messages, etc. A total of five novels was studied, namely Perempuan Politikus Melayu, 1515, 1511H [Kombat], SsPJ, Tunggu Teduh Dulu and Bahlut. This study will apply a qualitative methodology involving intensive reading and interpretation of written sources. To analyze the development of identity, the texdialism theory will be used as the basis of the study. The Texdialism Theory puts forward the principles of individualism or individuality to detect the ability of an author to build his identity or personality. To track the construction of the individualism, this approach presented four exploratory elements, namely subjectivity, individual style, individual inventor and individual action. All of these elements will be analysed textually and consistently based on the objectives and questions of the study. The study found that Faisal Tehrani sought to build and display his identity through subjectivity, individual styles, individual inventions and individual actions. The ability to build this individualism will reinforce his position as an author who has the characteristics of excellence because of his ideology, creativity, sensitivity and purpose in producing his novels

ABSTRAK Ngesti Wahyuni, Antielitisme Kebudayaan Dalam Novel Puya Ke Puya Karya Faisal Oddang. Skripsi, Jakarta: Program Studi Sosiologi, Fakultas Ilmu Sosial, Universitas Negeri Jakarta, 2020. Thesis, Jakarta: Sociology Study Program, Faculty of Social Sciences, Jakarta State University, 2020. This study aims to describe the construction of cultural anti-literacy in Toraja traditional funeral ceremonies in Puya Ke Puya. In addition, to describe the contradictions of cultural anti-literacy that occur in Puya Ke Puya's novels and to describe the implications of cultural anti-literacy and social criticism for literary works in Puya Ke Puya's novels. This study uses a qualitative approach with the type of hermeneutic research. The data analysis technique used in this study used critical discourse analysis techniques from Teun A. Van Dijk. The research subject is the novel Puya Ke Puya by Faisal Oddang which focuses on texts that represent the construction and contradictions of cultural anti-literacy carried out by figures in Toraja traditional burials. The author also conducted interviews with Toraja informants as data triangulation. The author analyzes and processes the texts contained in the novel Puya Ke Puya with the concept of culture in the past, present and future, which departs from the thoughts of Raymond Williams and is associated with cultural antielitism. The results showed that in this Puya Ke Puya novel there was a family conflict in deciding about the rambu solo funeral ceremony. The construction of cultural antielitism described in this novel contains six things, namely heredity, intrinsic quality, character intelligence, wealth, experience and authority. The contradiction of cultural antielitism related to the idea of two opposing things can be seen from the relationship between the main character and other figures regarding the decision to carry out the solo sign ceremony. The relevance of Torajan local culture with the times in Puya Ke Puya's novel is that an increasingly modern era changes its mindset in deciding to carry out traditional beliefs or the presence of new creativity in the culture itself.
