Knowledge as power and knowledge as resistance. Around the approach developed by Mark Olssen, John Codd and Anne-Marie O’Neill
Podejmując idee przedstawione przez Marka Olssena, Johna Codda i Anne-Marie O’Neill w książce Education Policy: Globalization, Citizenship and Democracy (2004), autor wskazuje na pominięcie we współczesnych studiach nad edukacją zasadniczej roli wiedzy, jaką odgrywa ona w procesach władzy i w procesach oporu. Tackling the ideas presented by Mark Olssen, John Codd and Anne-Marie O’Neill in their book Education Policy: Globalization, Citizenship and Democracy (2004), the author points out that contemporary educational studies fail to analyse the essential role of knowledge in power processes and resistance processes. Referring to Michel Foucault's theory of culture and Chantal Mouffe’s theory of radical democracy the author points out that knowledge in the modern society is a key element of power processes and related interdisciplinary techniques. The author identifies the essential areas impacted by knowledge built into power relationships and discusses the opportunities to generate resistance strategies that arise in those areas, including knowledge-based strategies.
Anne Frank House in Amsterdam: Confined Space as an Experiencescape
The Anne Frank house is a very literal and powerful example of a confined space, where numerous and diverse experiences took place and are still taking place. In the first part of the article the author focuses onthe original experiences of Anne Frank during her time in hiding duringthe Second World War, which were recorded in her diary. Nowadays, thesame building hosts the Anne Frank Museum, which is one of the most popular museums in the Netherlands. The author of this article analyses opinions of visitors published on Trip Advisor and notes that the experience of visiting this museum is connected with various strong emotions. This experience is often considered to be unique and one of a kind. On this basis, she suggests that the Anne Frank Museum, and the Secret Annex in particular, can be considered as an [email protected]ł Geografii i Studiów Regionalnych, Uniwersytet WarszawskiFrank Anne (2015), Dziennik, przeł. Niezwykłość kobiecej natury w opowiadaniach fantastycznych Anne Richter
The objective of this article is to examine how the classic fantastic motif of metamorphosis is used by Anne Richter, a Belgian writer and theorist of women’s fantastic, not only to arouse fear in the reader but also to raise women’s issues, particularly marriage. Using studies by fantastic literature theorists (including Labbé, Millet, Malrieu, Prince and Richter), as well as feminist critique texts (Cixous, de Beauvoir, Kristeva), the author analyses the motif of metamorphosis in two of Richter’s stories – Sul passo dell’Arno [Over the Arno Pass] and Un sommeil de plante [The Sleep of Plants] – showing the interweaving of classic elements of a fantastic work with the “extraordinary nature of women” and their womanhood. Korzystając z opracowań teoretyków literatury fantastycznej (m.in. Labbé, Millet, Malrieu, Prince, Richter) oraz tekstów krytyki feministycznej (Cixous, de Beauvoir, Kristeva), autorka artykułu poddaje analizie motyw metamorfozy w Sul passo dell’Arno i Un sommeil de plante – dwóch opowiadaniach Richter, wskazując przeplatanie się klasycznych elementów utworu fantastycznego z „niezwykłą naturą kobiety” i jej kobiecością
'The cracked mirror': Anne Sexton's poetics of self-representation
This thesis re-evaluates the work of the poet Anne Sexton (1928-1974), concentrating, in particular, on the indeterminacies, contradictions and aporia which it finds to be characteristic of her ostensibly frank and self-revelatory writing. The study is based on a close textual
analysis of Sexton's writing, is informed by oststructuralist theories, and is sustained by an
examination and discussion of archive collections of her previously unpublished papers. In seeking an understanding of Sexton's poetics, the thesis identifies and interrogates the strategies of denial and obfuscation apparent in her own explication of her work - principally, by scrutiny of the unpublished, and previously unresearched, drafts of a series of lectures
which she delivered in 1972. Chapters One and Two consider the origins of `confessional' or - Sexton's preferred term - 'personal' poetry and reassess her place within contemporary poetry. They suggest that
Sexton's writing is engaged in a process of negotiation and contestation, both with the boundaries and expectations of confessionalism, and with the strictures of T. S. Eliot's theory of `impersonality'. In support of these arguments, Chapter Two offer a reading of Sexton's
little-known poem, `Hurry Up Please It's Time', alongside its intertext, Eliot's The Waste Land. Chapter Three reassesses received views of the supposedly beneficial interrelationship between confessional speaker and reader. It examines Sexton's appropriation of dramatic
masks and personae and her use of metaphors of striptease and prostitution, and suggests that these are employed simultaneously to appease and to repel an intrusive audience. Similarly, Chapters Four and Five trace Sexton's problematisation of two previously-accepted tenets of confessional poetry: its status as autobiography and its truthfulness, drawing attention to the techniques employed in order to give the impression of both. Chapter Six considers Sexton's
problematic engagement with a language which is not malleable, transparent, and referential but, rather, is experienced as uncooperative and occlusive. Finally, the thesis recuperates Sexton from the common charge of narcissism, arguing that it is the writing, rather than the poet, which is self-reflexive and self-conscious. In this respect, it concludes that her work - perhaps unexpectedly - anticipates many of the tendencies of postmodernist writing
Interview: Anne-Marie Fortier
This paper is an edited version of an email interview conducted by Debra Ferreday and Adi Kuntsman with Anne-Marie Fortier, the author of Multicultural Horizons: Diversity and the Limits of the Civil Nation (Routledge, 2008). Fortier’s work has been informative in the development of some of the arguments explored in this special issue; in their conversation Ferreday and Kuntsman asked her to comment on the ideas of haunting, racial imaginaries, nostalgia, national anxieties, political feelings and hopes for the future
‘A festival of the Canadian Writer’ or on the Lesser Known Polish Translations of Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery
Artykuł poświęcony jest polskim tłumaczeniom powieści Anne of Green Gables L. M. Montgomery. The article deals with Polish translations of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s book Anne of Green Gables. The author focuses especially on the renderings published at the turn of the 21st century, when the so called “festival of the Canadian writer” began. This phrase is used in reference to the renascence of the popularity of Montgomery’s work in Poland. This cultural and marketing phenomenon not only affectedreaders, but also influenced the publishers’ and translators’ choices. In the article, some dimensions of this casus are discussed. Then some excerpts of translations are compared in order to show the features of the image of Canada inscribed in them by translators. What is more, the author points out that the Polish renderings can provide interesting information about the different aspects of Polish reality at theturn of the 21st century, in particular about the publishing policies and the Polish culture, aesthetic norms and trends or stereotypes

Postmemorial Experiences — Comparing Australian and Canadian Second Generation Migrant Poetry. On the Basis of Selected Poetry by Lily Brett and Anne Michaels
POSTMEMORIAL EXPERIENCES — COMPARING AUSTRALIAN AND CANADIAN SECOND GENERATION MIGRANT POETRY ON THE BASIS OF SELECTED POETRY BY LILY BRETT AND ANNE MICHAELS This article aims to look at selected volumes of poetry by renown Australian and Canadian poets of the second generation such as Lily Brett and Anne Michaels and trace their attempts at dealing with the heritage of memory handed down by their parents. Locating their emigrant literary oeuvre within the context of Marianne Hirsh’s idea of postmemory and the conviction that the post-Holocaust generations are “marked by memory” of their parents ([1997] 2002), Brett’s and Michaels’s poems can be viewed as written “against a rhetoric of the unspeakable” (Mandel 2001), a rhetoric which, according to Giorgio Agamben, lies foundations for poetry (1999). Both poets (whose literary output includes also novels) belong to the second generation of writers, born outside Poland after WWII, and they engage in considering the themes of postmemory, legacy of the Holocaust, and their personal take on the inherited trauma. Different in style and poetics, Brett’s and Michaels’s renditions of the traumatic past reveal striking similarities in evoking the topics of memory, languages, images of places and questions concerning the chances for and ways of healing despite the fact that the author live in such distant countries as Australia and Canada respectively. The article will, thus, explore the poets’ stance on the importance of remembering the trauma and commemorating the event central to their parents’ lives and mention the variegated stylistics which ranges from Brett’s simple language to Michaels’s extensive usage of metaphorical language. DOŚWIADCZENIA POSTPAMIĘCI — PORÓWNANIE AUSTRALIJSKIEJ I KANADYJSKIEJ POEZJI EMIGRANTÓW DRUGIEGO POKOLENIA NA PODSTAWIE WYBRANYCH UTWORÓW LILY BRETT I ANNE MICHAELS Niniejszy artykuł podejmuje temat postpamięci i próby radzenia sobie z nią w poezji emigrantek drugiego pokolenia z Australii i Kanady: Lily Brett i Anne Michaels piszących i publikujących w języku angielskim.
