This thesis was started with the aim of compiling a thematic catalogue of Armin Kaufmann’s work, of collecting a biographical survey of his life and of illustrating his creative work as it appeared to his contemporaries. The music material found in the inheritance of Armin Kaufmann is partly available in the “Musiksammlung der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek” (collection of music belonging to the Austrian National Library) and served as the basis of the thematic catalogue. Another part is available in the “Armin Kaufmann Dokumentationszentrum” (Armin Kaufmann documentation centre) in Stift Ossiach (monastery of Ossiach, Carinthia), which was inaugurated in summer 2009; these sources have also been considered. All “incipits” were not just reproduced mechanically but have been produced personally by the author of this thesis. Thus it was possible to locate obvious mistakes in some beats of the “incipits” – even in printed works – and to correct them in the reproduction. A catalogue of his works arranged according to opus numbers, produced in 1992 by Mrs. Leonore Endreß in commemoration of Armin Kaufmann’s 90th birthday and edited by the Austrian National Library “Musikalische Dokumentation”, was an important basis for preparing further systematic catalogues. Incorrect details discovered by the author of this thesis in the course of his research have also been corrected. The biographical information was gained from a family chronicle dating back to 1684 that was kindly placed at my disposal by Mrs. Elisabeth Kaufmann-Troppina, daughter of Armin Kaufmann, as well as from documents and diaries. Conversations with members of the family also helped to clear up details of his curriculum vitae. A great number of concert programmes document the performances of his works. As far as they were available they have been listed chronologically. From these programmes it was also possible to compile a catalogue of performers. 1696 How contemporaries, especially experts, reacted to the works of Armin Kaufmann becomes visible in the great number of critical reviews which, however, have mostly been reduced to passages concerning Armin Kaufmann. Forming an opinion on these articles is left to the reader. Last but not least: abstracts of memorial addresses have been included in my thesi

Novoopisana vrsta glavoča Zebrus pallaoroi (M. Kovačić, R. Šanda, K. Čekovská, T. Soukupová and J. Vukić, godine 2021.) nazvana je u čast dr. sc. Armina Pallaora. In Zagreb, on January 27, 2020, at the age of 65, Dr. Armin Pallaoro passed away, scientific advisor of the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in Split, and at that moment Croatian natural history was left without an excellent scientist in fields of marine biology, ichthyology, ornithology, fisheries biology and marine fisheries. He wrote 104 scientific papers on the above-mentioned issue. He was a passionate naturalist in the true sense of the word. He devoted his entire life to the sea and its secrets, about which he knew a lot, and selflessly shared his knowledge about the sea and life in it with great ease with younger colleagues. He was a co-author in 3 chapters of books and a co-author in the book „Crvena knjiga morskih riba Hrvatske“. The newly described species Zebrus pallaoroi Kovačić, Šanda, Čekovská, Soukupová & Vukić, 2021 is named in honor of Ph.D. Armin Pallaoro

An Automaton Group with PSPACE-Complete Word Problem

    No full text
We construct an automaton group with a PSPACE-complete word problem, proving a conjecture due to Steinberg. Additionally, the constructed group has a provably more difficult, namely EXPSPACE-complete, compressed word problem. Our construction directly simulates the computation of a Turing machine in an automaton group and, therefore, seems to be quite versatile. It combines two ideas: the first one is a construction used by D'Angeli, Rodaro and the first author to obtain an inverse automaton semigroup with a PSPACE-complete word problem and the second one is to utilize a construction used by Barrington to simulate circuits of bounded degree and logarithmic depth in the group of even permutations over five elements

This paper deals with the humoristic strategies in the Jüdische Kulturbilder (1904), a memoir with ethnographic traces of the Hungarian Rabbi Armin Schnitzer (1838-1914). A brief introduction to his biography, the sociocultural context and some basic terms of humor research, is followed by the analysis of the forms and functions of comic effects in the text, with a special emphasis on the satirical expressions of social criticism, the role of humor in coping with conflicts of everyday life, and the self-image of the author as a traditional and modern rabbi in the age of emancipation and assimilation

'The Italian Taylor and His Boy' or What Robert Armin Did to Straparola

    No full text
Robert Armin is well known as the last of Shakespeare's great stage clowns, the actor who inspired the creation of characters like Touchstone, Feste and Lavatch in Shakespeare's plays. He is less known as a pamphleteer, poet and playwright, despite the fact that he seems to have been quite productive in his time. This paper analyses in particular one of his most neglected works, entitled The Italian Taylor and His Boy (1609) in relation to its source, a novella of the collection 'Le Piacevoli Notti' [The Pleasant Nights'] (two volumes, 1550-1553) by the Italian author Giovan Francesco Straparola. First, I give reasons for Armin's choice, arguing that the story of Maestro Lattanzio and Dionigi might have attracted the actor's attention for its points in common with his own life. Then, I show how Armin does not produce a mere 'translation' of Straparola, as has sometimes been implied, but he improves the source in many ways: changing the finale and adding to the text a captivating dramat..
