Psychological Distress Related to the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Protective Role of Hope
The COVID-19 outbreak and the worldwide lockdown measures had an impact on the global mental health and psychological well-being of the general population. Several studies attempted to investigate the protective and risk factors for psychological distress related to the pandemic. However, to date, little is known about the role of hope in this context. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between hope and psychological distress related to the COVID-19 outbreak in the general population. The sample consisted of 504 Pakistani people who completed cross-sectionally the COVID-19 Peritraumatic Distress Index (CPDI) and the Adult Hope Scale (AHS). Bivariate Pearson correlation analysis was run to measure the relationship between hope and psychological distress; hierarchical regression analysis was run to investigate the association between demographics and hope with psychological distress. Higher levels of hope predicted lower levels of psychological distress. Being female, being older, lower level of education, urban residence, being married and living in nuclear family systems were associated with higher levels of psychological distress. The study highlights the protective role of hope on psychological distress related to COVID-19, contributing to knowledge on factors promoting positive mental health during emergency times and providing useful information for implementing effective public health policies and programmes

A study of thermal properties and water absorption of thermoplastic starch film reinforce with rice husk biochar / Muhammad Amirul Adeeb Mohd Zaine
The aim of this study was to analyse thermal properties and water absorption of thermoplastic starch reinforce with rice husk biochar. The sample was prepared by using a conservative casting technique by blending starch with plasticizer, sulphur, acetic acid, and rice husk biochar. As observed, FTIR was used to investigate the chemical interaction between the different components. Water absorption of the film was tested under room temperature with an ambient humidity. As a result it showed that thermoplastic starch without any reinforcement rice husk biochar have the highest percentage of water absorption which is 45.23% while with 7% concentration of rice husk biochar give the lowest percentage of water absorption of 27.37%. The analysis of thermoplastic starch included with the increment of the rice husk biochar concentration to the thermoplastic starch it showed that the percentage of water absorb decreases. The behaviour of thermal properties f thermoplastic starch with rice husk biochar was investigated by using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and as a result the thermal stability seems to be increasing with the increasing of rice husk biochar concentration. However the sample with 5% of rice husk bioichar seems to undergo the highest rate of mass change. This indicates that it goes through an easier thermal degradatio
Consciousness as the Self-Embedded Illusion of Conscious Frames: A Thought Experiment on the Illusory Continuity of the Self in a Static Universe
This thought experiment proposes a novel metaphysical hypothesis: that consciousness consists of isolated, static frames embedded within a non-dynamic, block universe. Each frame is an independent, self-contained configuration with embedded illusions of memory, anticipation, and continuity. There is no actual movement of consciousness through time; rather, the subjective impression of temporal progression arises from informational structures within each discrete frame. This work, termed the Self-Embedded Illusion of Conscious Frames (SEICF) theory, arose spontaneously through introspective reasoning influenced by the concept of a four-dimensional spacetime. While not developed through formal philosophical or scientific methods, the hypothesis aligns with certain themes in the philosophy of time, metaphysics of identity, and cognitive science. Its speculative nature invites interdisciplinary engagement and provides a provocative lens through which to explore the problem of consciousness and temporal experience.
