    Connotative analysis of media Bias on the New York Times' headlines on the Gaza conflict

    The analysis of biases in media reporting, particularly in headline news, reveals the profound influence of biased language on public discourse and political polarization. This research seeks to uncover the types of biases present in The New York Times headlines, specifically regarding the Gaza/Hamas conflict, to understand how these biases shape public perception. Leech's connotative meaning theory serves as the foundation for analyzing the implicit meanings embedded in words and phrases. Additionally, Stroud's types of bias are applied to categorize and explain the nature of the biases found. These theoretical frameworks are crucial in identifying the underlying messages conveyed through word choice and headline construction. A qualitative content analysis method is employed to dissect the language used in these headlines, identifying the connotative meanings and their impact on readers. The findings suggest that biased language in headlines. This research shows that 7 types of bias are shown, there are: Selection, Presentation, Confirmation, Omission, Partisian, Sensationalism. not only reflects but also reinforces partisan divides, potentially skewing public understanding of complex political issues. The findings reveal significant patterns of bias across different categories, suggesting that connotative meanings in headlines play a pivotal role in shaping public perception and reinforcing certain ideological narratives

    Pendugaan Parameter Genetik Dan Penampilan Karakter Agronomi Galur-Galur Sawi (Brassica Juncea L.)

    Tanaman sawi (Brassica juncea L.) adalah tanaman sayur semusim dan penghasil minyak nabati berkualitas tinggi dari famili Brassicaceae. Tanaman sawi memiliki toleransi yang besar terhadap panas dan tekanan air. Bagian tanaman sawi yang dapat dimanfaatkan adalah biji, bunga, dan daun yang dapat digunakan sebagai sumber minyak, sayur, bumbu, dan makanan ternak. Kandungan minyak nabati dalam biji tanaman sawi sebesar 38 – 46%. Banyak negara yang memanfaatkan biji tanaman sawi sebagai pengasil minyak nabati. Permintaan terhadap tanaman sawi di Indonesia setiap tahunnya mengalami peningkatan dikarenakan semakin bertambahnya jumlah penduduk dan kesadaran masyarakat akan kebutuan gizi. Produksi tanaman sawi di Indonesia sejak tahun 2012-2016 mengalami fluktuatif, oleh karena itu diperlukan adanya pengembangan tanaman sawi yang memiliki produktivitas dan hasil minyak yang tinggi. Fakultas Pertanian Universitas Brawijaya sedang mengembangkan tanaman sawi yang didapatkan dari galur-galur murni. Usaha yang dapat dilakukan untuk mengembangkan dan meningkatkan produktivitas tanaman sawi adalah melalui program pemuliaan tanaman. Perbaikan karakter tanaman sawi melalui program pemuliaan tanaman memerlukan informasi parameter genetik antara lain keragaman genetik dan heritabilitas yang berpengaruh terhadap fenotipe populasi tanaman. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari keragaman genetik, heritabilitas, dan menyeleksi penampilan genotipe karakter agronomi yang unggul pada 57 galur tanaman sawi. Hipotesis yang diajukan dalam penelitian ini adalah terdapat karakter agronomi yang memiliki keragaman luas, karakter agronomi yang memiliki nilai heritabilitas tinggi, dan diperoleh galur-galur tanaman sawi yang memiliki penampilan genotipe karakter agronomi yang unggul. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di Seed Bank and Nursery, Agrotechno Park Universitas Brawijaya, Desa Jatikerto, Kecamatan Kromengan, Kabupaten Malang pada bulan Desember 2018 – April 2019. Alat yang digunakan untuk menunjang penelitian ini, yaitu beberapa macam alat ukur, gunting, alat tulis, kamera, papan penanda, ajir, panduan deskriptor dari UPOV tahun 2017, dan alat-alat budidaya tanaman sawi. Bahan tanam yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu lima puluh tujuh genotipe tanaman sawi (Brassica juncea L.) dan tiga genotipe cek. Metode yang digunakan untuk penelitian ini adalah Rancangan Acak Kelompok diperluas (augmented design). Perlakuan yang diberikan adalah 60 genotipe tanaman sawi yang terdiri dari 57 genotipe yang diuji dan 3 genotipe cek. Genotipe yang diuji akan disebar kedalam 5 blok, sedangkan tiga genotipe cek akan ditanam pada setiap blok, sehingga terdapat 72 satuan percobaan. Setiap satuan percobaan terdiri dari 7 tanaman. Variabel pengamatan sebanyak 38 karakter agronomi yang terdiri dari 15 karakter kualitatif dan 24 karakter kuantitatif. Pada penelitian ini variabel kualitatif disajikan dalam bentuk gambar dan deskripsi, sedangkan karakter kuantitatif dianalisis dengan menggunakan analisis varians untuk augmented design, pendugaan nilai varians, nilai koefisien variasi, dan nilai heritabilitas. Uji lanjutan untuk seleksi menggunakan perhitungan LSI pada taraf 5% yang akan dilanjutkan dengan sistem skor.7 Keragaman yang luas terdapat pada karakter biji per polong, jumlah polong per tanaman, dan berat segar. Keragaman yang sedang terdapat pada karakter panjang kotiledon, jumlah daun konsumsi, panjang tangkai daun, panjang cabang pertama, jumlah cabang primer, panjang polong pertama, panjang polong, lebar polong, dan panjang paruh polong. Keragaman yang sempit terdapat pada karakter umur panen benih. Karakter dengan nilai heritabilitas tinggi terdapat pada karakter panjang kotiledon, jumlah daun konsumsi, berat segar, umur panen benih, jumlah polong per tanaman, panjang polong, lebar polong, dan jumlah biji per polong. Karakter dengan nilai heritabilitas rendah yaitu, tinggi tanaman, panjang cabang pertama, jumlah cabang primer, panjang polong pertama, lebar daun, lebar tangkai daun, jumlah cabang sekunder, dan berat 100 biji. Terdapat galur-galur sawi yang mempunyai karakter unggul untuk bahan baku konsumsi dan industri. Terdapat lima genotipe potensial yang memiliki penampilan karakter unggul untuk bahan baku konsumsi terdapat pada genotipe Bju(BW18), Bju(BW35), Bju(BW39), Bju(BW43), dan Bju(BW60). Genotipe potensial yang memiliki penampilan karakter unggul untuk bahan baku industri terdapat pada genotipe Bju(BW19), Bju(BW26), Bju(BW11), Bju(BW21), Bju(BW16), dan Bju(BW52)

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    The objective of this research was study genetic variability, heritability, and select the appearance of superior agronomic character genotypes in 57 Indian mustard for use in raw materials of consumption and industrial. This research was conducted at Seed Bank and Nursery, Agrotechno Park Brawijaya University, Jatikerto Village, Malang Regency in December 2018 - April 2019. The method used for this research was an augmented design. The treatment given was 60 genotypes of Indian mustard which consisted of 57 tested genotypes and 3 varieties as checks. The tested genotype will be spread into 5 blocks, while the three varieties of checks will be planted on each block, so there are 72 experimental units. The observation variables of agronomic characters consisted of 15 qualitative characters and 24 quantitative characters. Wide variability is found in the character of seeds per pod, number of pods per plant, and fresh weight. High heritability was found in the character of cotyledons, number of leaf consumption, fresh weight, age of seed harvest, number of pods per plant, length of pods, width of pods, and number of seeds per pod. There are Indian mustard which have superior characteristics for raw materials of consumption and industry.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari variabilitas genetik, heritabilitas, dan menyeleksi penampilan genotipe karakter agronomi unggul pada 57 galur sawi untuk digunakan dalam bahan baku konsumsi dan industri.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
