Transnational Mobility and the Renegotiation of Gender Identities: Albanian and Bulgarian Migrants in Greece

    No full text
Riki van Boeschoten examines the renegotiation of gender identities among Albanian and Bulgarian migrants in Greece. She focuses on two major issues that emerge from the life stories of male and female migrants. The first is the empowerment of migrant women and disempowerment of migrant men, which seem to contradict the ‘patriarchal backlash’ in their home countries. The second is the striking differences between the gender identities of Albanian and Bulgarian migrant women. Van Boeschoten locates these trends against a backdrop of gender relations in Albania and Bulgaria and also the particularities of the migration process after 1990. © 2015, The Author(s)

When the Buddha Came to Nagoya: Immersive Reading in Kōriki Enkōan’s Illustrated Accounts of Traveling Temple Exhibitions

    No full text
The illustrated books of Kōriki Enkōan (1756–1831), a samurai and amateur illustrator from Owari domain, offer a unique window into the culture of spectacle and display that flourished in late Edo-period Japan. Included in his corpus are several manuscripts that document kaichō, public exhibitions of sacred icons and temple treasures hosted by Buddhist temples and other venues. While most studies of kaichō emphasize their popularity in the capital of Edo, this article focuses on Enkōan’s illustrated manuscript of an exhibition of the famous Seiryōji Shaka that was held in Nagoya in 1819. Situating the event and its visual documentation within the statue’s legendary history as a traveling icon, the study explores how Enkōan’s careful manipulation of text and image created an immersive reading experience that allowed its readers a kind of virtual access to the exhibition. Considering the author’s position within the contemporary social hierarchy, it also addresses the role that samurai values may have played in shaping the representation of kaichō and illuminates its intersections with urban spectacle and emerging exhibition practices in early modern Japan

Looking Healthy: Visualizing Mental Health and Illness Online

    No full text
Through a historical case study of the mental health community website HealthyPlace.com, the author applies social semiotics and critical discourse analysis to interrogate the visual discourse surrounding mental health online. Web design transformations over the course of a decade demonstrate how visual imagery conveys a shift from a biomedical discourse focused on illness to a social-therapeutic discourse centered on health and wellness. Ultimately, the author argues that the utilization of faces in stock photography, stylized images, and social media platforms on HealthyPlace reflects a growing trend in virtual visual synthetic personalization on the internet to market mental health disorders as a concern for the everyday person while selling the promise of wellness through online participation. This article explores the visual language of mental health and wellness online to expanding on research in the field of visual communication, health communication, and new media studies

Spin lattice relaxation in pure and mixed alkanes and their correlation with thermodynamic and macroscopic transport properties

    No full text
Spin-lattice, T\sb1, and spin-spin, T\sb2, relaxation times of the alkanes from n-pentane to n-hexadecane were measured at 25\sp\circC. The T\sb1 values agree well with those of previous investigators. The values of T\sb1 and T\sb2 were equal for each alkane studied. Empirical correlations were found between T\sb1 and two parameters: the acentric factor and the rotational coupling coefficient. The product η\etaT\sb1 was constant for all the alkanes except n-pentane. The spin-lattice relaxation time was dedimensionalized and a three parameter corresponding states correlation was developed following the treatment of Tham and Gubbins (42) for transport coefficients. Excellent correspondence was found for the saturated alkanes over the temperature range 22 to 90\sp\circC and for benzene from 12 to 63\sp\circC. Spin-lattice relaxation times of mixtures of n-hexane and n-hexadecane were measured at 25\sp\circC. The decay of magnetization could not be described by a single exponential curve. The results were analyzed using three methods. (Abstract shortened with permission of author.

This research aims to analyze the forms of shimenawa in Shinto shrines and Nonomiya shrines and the meanings contained therein. In the discussion, the author describes the shimenawa found at Shinto shrines based on shape, material, position, place and color. The method used in this research is a descriptive method which describes an event as it is by means of preparation, namely collecting, compiling, classifying, reviewing and interpreting data based on research data. In collecting data, the author uses library research in the form of journals, books and also credible internet sources based on the accuracy of the data by matching one source with another. The results show that the shimenawa on the jinja is a form of the sanctity of the kami that must be preserved through its installation in all places. The installation of shimenawa on haiden and setsumatsusha at Nonomiya Shrine shows a just action because it does not discriminate against the sanctity of the kami whether the main kami or not. The use of shimenawa in Nonomiya Shrine is also a form of the Shrine's protection given to saiou who are undergoing self-purification, so that saiou are not easily tainted by kegare.62 PagesSkripsi Sarjan

From Comprehension Struggles to Reflective Growth: An Exploratory Study of Vodcast Use in Self-Directed Listening among Beginner EFL Learners

    No full text
This qualitative study investigated the experiences of beginner English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners utilizing English vodcasts for self-directed listening and metacognitive reflection. During a six-week intervention, 25 university students in West Sumatera, Indonesia, interacted with authentic spoken English input, supported by structured reflection. Data from Vodcast Analysis Templates and Oral Recordings documented comprehension processes, strategic responses, metacognitive insights, and affective engagement. Thematic analysis revealed four interconnected themes: challenges in listening comprehension, strategic responses to difficulties, metacognitive reflection and awareness, and affective engagement and motivation. Students often encountered difficulties with fast speech, unfamiliar accents, idiomatic expressions, and complex content, and they addressed these challenges through repetition, note-taking, and the use of subtitles. The templates facilitated learners in articulating breakdowns, evaluating listening behaviors, and recognizing growth. Overreliance on subtitles and repetition occasionally promoted superficial processing; some learners focused on vocabulary without incorporating it into discourse comprehension; and inconsistent oral responses indicated variable spoken fluency. The findings indicate that vodcasts can enhance autonomy, strategy use, and reflective learning, while also identifying areas that need instructional improvement
