The Local Press as a Medium to Create Diversion
International audienceThe press with the largest circulation in France—and which is virtually unknown abroad—are regional newspapers (around 50 dailies and 150 weeklies). In this chapter, Loïc Ballarini explores the content in these newspapers. Through an analysis of more than 1500 articles, he examines how the French regional press can claim (or not) to reflect the geographical area it covers. Despite the apparent diversity of news, the research shows a strict hierarchy of local information, which is voluntarily complacent about those in power and almost never critical. As if it were stuck in the consensus-based model that made it successful a century ago, the local press is unable to put its finger on long-term shifts and changes in the region. The author describes it as a diversion of attention away from social dynamics towards extremely simplified social constructs
Breve genealogia e anatomia del concetto di habitus
In this essay, Loïc Wacquant proposes a clarification of the concept of habitus, correcting some recurring misunderstandings. First, he briefly sketches the genealogy of the notion, pointing out its philosophical origins, and hinting at its use among some classical social science thinkers. Then, the author conducts a dissection of the habitus in the work of Pierre Bourdieu, and accurately reconstructs its anatomy, also referring to his own ethnographic research experience.
Loïc Wacquant's "Urban Outcasts" compares poor and working-class neighborhoods in Chicago and Paris, and concludes that American racism has combined with advanced capitalism to create hyperghettos, whereas Parisian "banlieues" are heterogeneous anti-ghettos that are nonetheless destabilized by labor market and political forces that render low-skilled workers simultaneously superfluous and without a state safety net. This review revisits Chicago in the 2000s and argues that Wacquant both overstates the collective revulsion directed at disadvantaged neighborhoods and understates contemporary processes of erasure. It also suggests that using Chicago's marginalized neighborhoods as archetypes masks the diversity of race and class settlements in the US. This review agrees with the importance of uncovering the role of the state in shaping cities, and ultimately highlights areas of convergence and divergence in US and French housing policy as it relates to urban public and social housing. Exploring the future of the U.S. pharmaceutical industry : a supply chain perspective
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, Technology and Policy Program, 2007.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references (p. 76-80).This thesis uses an innovative approach to explore the much-analyzed U.S. Healthcare system. To be sure, we are fully aware of the challenges involved in making robust system level policy recommendations and how local inefficiencies and hidden uncertainties undermine attempts proposing sweeping changes. Hence, we propose to investigate the Healthcare system using a supply chain perspective, which is inherently cross-functional and typically involves numerous different stakeholders. This holistic view will force us to think beyond artificial functional boundaries that promote local inefficiencies in the Healthcare system. Since the future is increasingly uncertain, we chose to use the scenario planning technique to guide the research process of developing effective system level policies. We will also leverage our insights to recommend new research directions to investigate the redefined system boundaries suggested by our scenarios. Since a Fortune 50 pharmaceutical company was used as a case study, the research focused primarily on a subset of the U.S. Healthcare system namely the U.S. pharmaceutical industry. The research also benefited from a series of workshops with supply chain executives from a variety of industries.(cont.) These workshops helped us refine and validate the scenario planning methodology as a tool to think and plan for the long-term future in uncertain times. Furthermore, the analysis of U.S. Healthcare inefficiencies through a supply chain perspective resulted in some promising policy recommendations as well as exciting future research ideas.by Loïc Lagarde.S.M
Some Europeans are more equal than others
The position of Roma migrants in the EU presents an anomaly which challenges the foundations of European Union law. As Union citizens, European migrants are entitled to freedom of movement and residence in Member States. Yet the rights intended to secure this position have been routinely and selectively denied to Roma migrants, leading to forced evictions and collective expulsions without regard t o European Law. As has been evidenced in the UK, Roma arrivals are viewed with particularly acute suspicion; a response which reflects their double stigmatization as both immigrant and Roma. At the same time, Roma migration from new Member States has expo sed a contradiction inherent in the citizenship project which strikes at the heart of the Union ’s human rights credentials. The degree of exclusion and inequality faced by Europe’s largest minority in all Member States is the most pressing internal human rights issue facing the EU. Yet the European institutions continue to lack a coherent response and defined strategy. The current European framework demanding National Action Plans is commendable in that it prevents individual states from abdicating responsibility for the situation of their Roma citizens. Nevertheless, the absence of clear targets, Roma engagement and European leadership, suggest that this strategy is doomed to failure offering little more than a distraction. In a Union predicated on, inter alia, the rule of law, respect for human rights and the protection of minorities, this detached position undermines the legitimacy of the entire citizenship project
