Life-Span Developmental Psychology: Midlife and Later Years in Western and Non-Western Societies

    No full text
This chapter discusses the basis on which studies have been done on the later years of life in Western and non-Western cultures. It suggests that because Westerners value independence, most research on aging in Western societies has focused on how to help the individual maintain his or her functional independence throughout the life-span. Non-Westerners, on the other hand, value interdependence. Therefore, most research on aging has focused on the availability of social support in later life. But with Westernization influences in non-Western societies, there should be a shift in research efforts in order to accommodate a new understanding of aging and human development that includes the promotion of functional independence in later life

Self-archiving practice and the influence of publisher policies in the social sciences

    No full text
Authors in different disciplines exhibit very different behaviours on the so-called ‘green’ road to open access, i.e. self-archiving. This study looks at the self-archiving behaviour of authors publishing in leading journals in six social science disciplines. It tests the hypothesis that authors are self-archiving according to the norms of their respective disciplines rather than following self-archiving policies of publishers, and that, as a result, they are self-archiving significant numbers of publisher PDF versions. It finds significant levels of self-archiving, as well as significant self-archiving of the publisher PDF version, in all the disciplines investigated. Publishers’ self-archiving policies have no influence on author self-archiving practice

Symptoms of Imminent Eclampsia Among Women Attending Care at Muhimbili National Hospital: A Case Refferent Study

    No full text
Preeclampsia affects about 5 to 10% of all pregnancies and eclamptic seizure is one of its serious complications. In many developing countries including Tanzania, maternal and perinatal mortality due to eclampsia are high. As yet, primary prevention of eclampsia is not possible since the causes are largely unknown. Headache, visual disturbance, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting have been reported by various studies to precede most eclamptic seizures; thus could be used to predict and therefore prevent some cases given the availability of magnesium sulphate. These symptoms however are also common in normal pregnancy and post delivery mothers due to physiological changes of pregnancy and common disease conditions that usually affect pregnant women in our settings. The present study evaluated the characteristics of symptoms that are consistent with imminence of eclampsia This was a case referent study in which 123 eclamptic and 123 non eclamptic mothers that best matched in terms of age, parity, gestation age and delivery were enrolled, making a total of 246 women. The presence and characteristics of headache, visual disturbance, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting were enquired. A 4 grade scale was used to grade the severity of headache. In the rest of symptoms, common presenting features were utilized. Headache was common in both groups but was more frequent in eclamptic than in referent group of women (88% vs. 43%, p <0.001). In eclamptic mothers headache was mainly severe, frontal and most of the seizures happened within one week of the onset of headache, as compared to referent women where headache was mostly mild and either frontal or generalized. Visual problems were significantly frequent in eclamptics than in referent women, (39% vs. 3% p<0.001). Of the eclamptic mothers who presented with visual problems, 45(94%) had blurring of vision, 32(67%) had blind spots, 10(21%) had photophobia and only 7(15%) had total blindness. A total of 47(98%) of eclamptic mothers developed seizures within 12hours of the onset of visual problems. The frequency of abdominal pain was not significantly different between eclamptic and referent mothers (47% vs.38% p=0.156), however upper quadrant abdominal pain was significantly reported in eclamptic than in referent group of women (36% vs.9%, p=0.001). There was no significant difference on the type of abdominal pain presented by both groups. Nausea was common in both eclamptics and referent group of women (60% vs. 54%, p=0.303). There was no difference on presentation with vomiting among eclamptic and referent women (62% vs. 68% p=0.516) and in both groups the type of vomiting was commonly non projectile. This study has revealed that headache, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting are common to pregnancy whether or not complicated by preeclampsia/eclampsia. The characteristics of headache, visual disturbances and abdominal pain differ between eclamptics and women without preeclampsia/eclampsia. In a pre eclamptic woman, an onset of a severe frontal headache or upper quadrant abdominal pain would suggest an occurrence of seizures within one week. Visual disturbance is the most ominous sign as seizures ensue within 12 hours of its onset. Nausea and vomiting cannot be reliably used to predict clampsia.\u

High Frequency Functional Ultrasound in Mice

    No full text
Functional ultrasound (fUS) is a relatively new imaging modality to study the brain with a high spatiotemporal resolution and a wide field-of-view. In fUS detailed images of cerebral blood flow and volume are used to derive functional information, as changes in local flow and/or volume may reflect neuronal activation through neurovascular coupling. Most fUS studies so far have been performed in rats. Translating fUS to mice, which is a favorable animal model for neuroscience, pleads for a higher spatial resolution than what has been reported so far. As a consequence the temporal sampling of the blood flow should also be increased in order to adequately capture the wide range in blood velocities, as the Doppler shifts are inversely proportional to the spatial resolution. Here we present our first detailed images of the mouse brain vasculature at high spatiotemporal resolution. In addition we show some early experimental work on tracking brain activity upon local electrical stimulation.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Signal Processing System

Ploughing the Field:A Discussion About YA Studies

    No full text
In lieu of an abstract:In 1996, Caroline Hunt asked whether “the theoretical criticism of YA literature [would] ever reach the standard already seen in children's-literature criticism” because, at the time, “it seem[ed] unlikely that this turbulent field [would] ever produce such criticism in quantity; its roots were formed in other soil” (10). Despite her concern, in the nearly two and a half decades that have passed since Hunt made this claim, YA Studies has become a thriving part of academic discourse. With the launch of both the International Journal of Young Adult Literature (IJYAL) and the YA Studies Association (YASA), 2020 marks a turning point. While both organisations are distinct, they seek to propagate, cultivate, and harvest YA scholarship and to continue the work of this rich and fertile field of research. Though our (perhaps overzealous) use of farming terminology offers a light-hearted response to Hunt’s claim, the metaphor is a useful one because not only is YA scholarship organic and blossoming, it is also open to productive disruption in the manner of ploughing, as the following discussion demonstrates. We have collated the perspectives of sixteen scholars (see Table 1) who research, teach, and/or publish work that intersects YA Studies and who have roles in one or more of the Editorial Board of IJYAL and the Executive Board or Advisory Committee of YASA, in order to examine the past, present, and potential future of YA scholarship.© 2020, E. Can a Two-Sector Business Cycle Model Account for the 2001 Recession of Turkey?

    No full text
This paper investigates whether a two-sector small open economy real business cycle model calibrated to match Turkish data is able to account for the simultaneous sharp reversal in the current account, real exchange rate depreciation, and the severe recession observed in the aftermath of the 2001 financial and currency crisis of Turkey. Estimated shocks for the model's eight exogenous variables are used to simulate model dynamics, and the resulting time series are compared to the actual series. The model does a fairly good job in matching the output drop, while it faces difficulty in matching the sharp real exchange rate depreciation.Business cycles, Turkey

Л., Атанова Я. О. RESUME Kyryliuk M. L., Atanova Ya. O. PHOSPHORUS-CALCIUM METABOLISM IN POSTMENOPAUSAL WOMEN WITH DIABETES MELLITUS In this work it was investigated the state of phosphorus-calcium metabolism in postmenopausal women with diabetes mellitus depending on the type of diabetes, length of menopause and diabetes, body weight, type of hypoglycemic therapy. It is shown that the concentration of ionized calcium, general calcium and inorganic phosphorus in the blood can not serve as the main marker of the state of bone mineral density in postmenopausal women with diabetes mellitus type 2 in in cases of absence of severe chronic renal failure and related comorbid pathology. It was found that sulfonylureas drugs and insulin in combination with biguanide not affect on performance of phosphorous-calcium metabolism in postmenopausal women with diabetes mellitus type 2. Keywords: phosphorus-calcium metabolism, diabetes mellitus, menopause. Never be silent : publishing & imperialism in Kenya, 1884-1963

    No full text
Social communications are central to any social struggle. There is a sizable body of literature from other countries on the use of oral medium, newspapers, books and other forms of communications being used as tools for organising against a powerful enemy, as a training ground for cadres and for clarifying and developing revolutionary theory, ideology, organisation and practice. All this ensures a greater unity among those resisting oppression and exploitation. Thus revolutionary and liberation forces of Bolsheviks in the Soviet Union, the Communist Party of China, and in Vietnam had developed theories and practices of revolutionary publishing as part of their revolutionary work. This has also been the case during anti-colonial and anti-imperialist struggles in Africa, but very little of this has been systematically documented as an aspect of revolutionary communications policy and practice. While the colonial communications systems have been reasonably well documented, the resistance communication systems remain largely undocumented and ignored. This book is an initial attempt to document this dynamic communications process in Kenya with its external struggles against colonialism and its complex internal struggles with overlaying divisions of race and class, Kenyan and foreign peoples. The main theme emerging from this experience is that people struggling to change their society always find ways of establishing their own system of communicating with the people they lead and by whom they are led. Their mission of revolution, of change, of peace, of social and economic justice requires that they should never be silent. This was well understood and practised by the liberation forces in Kenya. They were never silent
