Ingrid Ylva och tornet i Bjälbo

    No full text
The article discusses the background to the erection of the huge church tower in Bjälbo, Östergötland, Sweden. It also focuses on medieval women as founders of churches. The author maintains that new dendrochronological dating of the tower could mean that founder of this building piece was not one of the male members of the important Bjälbo dynasty, but Ingrid Ylva the mother of Birger Jarl

The influence of Country-of-Origin stereotypes on consumer responses to food safety scandals: The case of the horsemeat adulteration

Food safety scandals are recurring events in the food industry worldwide and companies are not immune to these incidents. However, there is a paucity of studies that examine how consumers evaluate and respond to brands involved in food crises and how consumers’ prejudicial views about brands may bias these responses. Following attribution theory, the current study analyzes the psychological mechanisms through which consumers form judgments about a brand’s culpability in the aftermath of a food safety scandal. Furthermore, this study assesses how the dimensions of a brand’s country-of-origin (perceived competence and perceived warmth) affect the mechanism of blame attribution. A real food crisis, the 2013 European horsemeat adulteration scandal, provides the framework for an experimental study with 816 Italian consumers. The results show that perceived country-of-origin warmth diminishes consumers’ perceptions of internal locus, stability, and controllability of the food incident, thus decreasing consumers’ attributions of blame toward the faulty brand. Perceived competence increases consumers’ perceptions of the controllability of the harmful behavior which leads to higher attributions of blame. Higher blame attribution leads to lower intentions to buy the brand in the future. Furthermore, when consumers perceive the food scandal as highly severe and when they are highly ethnocentric, perceived competence diminishes consumers’ perceptions of internal locus and stability of the food incident. The theoretical contribution of the study and practical implications for food brand managers are addressed

Global climate change is causing more extreme droughts, as well as subtler chronic changes in precipitation patterns. Both chronic and extreme precipitation change can alter ecosystem structure and function, and these alterations may affect how systems respond to future extreme climatic events. Understanding how legacies of various past precipitation changes may alter the effects of future extreme droughts will be important for predicting ecosystem responses to climate change. We investigated how ecological legacies of experimentally-imposed chronic and extreme precipitation changes altered the impact of an extreme drought on an economically-important grassland ecosystem.Top Scholars for University-Wide Graduate Programs

A multidimensional approach to knowledge management for new product development : balancing new product development options versus knowledge with the conversation model

    No full text
Abstract: Culture eats process for breakfast, while organizational context may feed or (def)eat designers and current and future New Product Development (NPD) processes. This strategic design research specifically supports small and medium enterprises (SMEs). It explores which knowledge management (KM) approaches can support their product innovation processes and staff. Based upon empirical insights in the furniture industry, a Conversation Model is developed to gather multidisciplinary colleagues and experts around the table to discuss a firm\u2019s balanced offer of serial-production-oriented NPD (for both new and redesigned products) versus made-to-measure NPD. Discussions about a good NPD ratio can also reveal knowledge gaps and necessary changes in processes to respond to new NPD opportunities. Besides NPD options, even organizational change and transition might be put on the table. Plans can be made accordingly to collaboratively prepare for the organisation\u2019s future

Designing long-term reuse : uncovering motivators and barriers to sustained use of reusable alternatives to single-use products

    No full text
Abstract: Single-use products offer many advantages, thanks to their convenience, attractiveness, and effectiveness in protecting other products. However, they come at a steep cost to the environment and human health. Reusable alternatives can provide a sustainable solution, but ensuring their long-term usage poses challenges. This PhD research investigates motivators and barriers to the sustained use of these alternatives and aims to provide guidance for designers. The main research objectives are (i) understanding motivators and barriers to long-term usage, (ii) exploring variations in motivators and barriers across products, contexts, and users, and (iii) providing support for designers in developing products that enable long-term reuse. The research methodology includes qualitative and quantitative studies including interviews, surveys, and diary studies. The results indicate that motivators and barriers are related to either willingness, ability, or routine, all of which are necessary to increase the chances of successful long-term reuse. User segments and product categories are identified, guiding design interventions. After testing several preliminary tools for designing for long-term reuse, a framework was developed to assist designers in creating successful reusable solutions, highlighting the importance of tailoring interventions to different user types and product categories. Future research will involve testing the framework in workshops with design practitioners and other stakeholders. By bridging the gap between research and design implementation, this doctoral research contributes to the advancement of solutions for reducing waste and pollution associated with single-use products
