    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Eduarda Mansilla. A Woman who Contains Multitudes

In this paper we will analyse the figure of Eduarda Mansilla in light of her self-figurations as author and mother. In this nineteenth-century author, the public and private dimensions do not seem to exclude each other but rather to complement each other, although sometimes, as we will try to show, the former is more important than the latter. We also note that the ideal of specialised spheres (the domestic and the public) does not always occur in the expected way. In Mansilla, the boundary between the public and the private becomes labile and, in this instability of the spheres, tensions arise that do not always find a solution. The tense and the contradictory become evident and turn this woman of the Buenos Aires elite into a complex author who is difficult to classify. The analysis of the intertwining of the public and the private will focus on the prologue to Cuentos (Mansilla, [1880] 2011), entitled ‘Una palabra al lector’, written by the author herself, and on some journalistic texts.

Argentine francophone literature originates with Eduarda Mansilla’s novel Pablo ou la vie dans les Pampas, published in 1869; the author forwards a copy to Victor Hugo, generating a brief correspondence. In this article, we both present and analyze an unpublished letter by Eduarda Mansilla, addressed to Victor Hugo. Furthermore, we compare it to Victor Hugo‘s answer to confirm the existence of a letter exchange between the authors. The relevance of this entwine lies in the fact that Mansilla and Victor Hugo are two central literary figures around which revolve the Argentine francophone literature; a literature yet to be explored

Lucía Miranda (1860) of Eduarda Mansilla and its Italian Genealogies

Lucía Miranda (1860), the first novel by the Argentinian writer Eduarda Mansilla de García (1834-1992) keeps several genetic and genealogical secrets well hidden. The presence of a secondary plot that takes place in Naples (Italy) is a unique fact along all the remakes of the so called «Lucía Miranda’s episode» during centuries, from the chronicle by Ruy Díaz de Guzmán finished around 1612. There are «intratextual» reasons: Naples, presenting the quintessence of high Italian culture, has a strong symbolic value in the interaction Nature/Culture, Barbarism/ Civilization, America/Europe, Wilderness/City, as well as the feminine genealogy (María de las Rosas-Nina Barberini) that «places into abyss» the story of the main feminine character, Lucía Miranda. But there are also «intertextual» motivations for appealing to an Italian scene: the acknowledged, and recently found out debt of the author, Eduarda Mansilla, towards Alessandro Manzoni and his masterpiece: The Betrothed (I promessi sposi), to which she attributes the upheaval of her literary vocation. Finally, the fact of Naples being the chosen scenario, refers us to Eduarda Mansilla’s familiar relationship with don Pedro de Angelis: the great Neapolitan scholar, first editor and publisher of Ruy Díaz de Guzmán’s chronicle. Indeed, he put his best talents to serve her uncle, the Governor Juan Manuel de Rosas, but first of all, he used them at the service of the future historical Argentinian legacy

Variaciones sobre un episodio de Facundo. Autores en proceso: Domingo F. Sarmiento, José M. Paz y Eduarda Mansilla

The following writing starts off the reading of an anecdote starring Facundo Quiroga and told by Sarmiento in the chapter "The citadel" of his book Facundo. The anecdote of the civil wars of the mid-nineteenth century accumulates more than one version about episodes that have similar characteristics, a framework that allowed us to approach the sequence as a corpus of study. José María Paz in his Memoirs and Eduarda Mansilla in Pablo or life in the pampas, take up the anecdote of Sarmiento but alternate the characters that interpret it while enabling conflicting readings. On the other hand, we will also carry out a survey of the author\u27s condition, mainly when we approach the textual and pictorial sources of the sarmientina script.
