Summary of experimental verification of the flux and energy spectrum of secondary electrons at high altitudes in the atmosphere

    No full text
A brief summary of the measurement of the flux and energy spectrum of secondary electrons at balloon altitude over Fort Churchill is given. These measurements are compared with two calculations, one by Perola and Scarsi and the other by the author. A correction is made to an error of Beedle and Webber in plotting the results of the author's calculations. </jats:p

International Collaboration to Develop and Harmonize Drug Interaction Guidance for Nirmatrelvir/Ritonavir During COVID-19: Lessons Learned for Future Pandemic Preparedness

    No full text
In December 2021/January 2022, the SARS-CoV-2 antiviral drug, nirmatrelvir/ritonavir, was authorized in the United States, Canada, and Europe. However, ritonavir has significant drug-drug interaction potential, and information resources were incomplete or provided conflicting advice for certain DDIs. Within the challenging pandemic setting, nirmatrelvir/ritonavir was being prescribed largely by clinicians unfamiliar with ritonavir. COVID-19 affects people with comorbidities and polypharmacy who could benefit from therapy, but prescriber uncertainty surrounding the appropriate management of DDIs was a barrier to the use of nirmatrelvir/ritonavir. To support clinicians, the National Institutes of Health COVID-19 Guidelines Panel, the Ontario Science Table, and the University of Liverpool independently developed prescribing guidelines. Ultimately, the groups united to establish the LiON-PK (Liverpool-Ontario-NIH Pharmacokinetics) collaboration. Here we describe how the team developed pragmatic and harmonized guidance for managing DDIs with nirmatrelvir/ritonavir. This framework may inform development of prescribing resources for other complex medications, or for future pandemic preparedness. © The Author(s) 2025. This essay examines the main characters of the ECB within the EMU, in the light of the very recent enlargement of the European Union. The Author studies the institutional aspects of the ECB, with particular attention to the following specific issues: the Governing Council - main body of the ECB -, and its voting system; the wide independence and the consequent limited accountability of the Bank. As to the voting system of the Governing Council, the Author is very critical both on the recent reform, approved in order to face at the enlargement, and on the official and dominant opinion, according to which the national governors, when sitting in the Council, should pursue the common interest of the so called Euro zone. On the contrary, in this seat they should represent their States, and claim the interests and the claims of the same. As to the accountability of the Bank, the Author upholds a greater involvement of the European Parliament, at the moment provided with very few powers in the matter

Information handling in astronomy : beyond technologies and methodologies

    No full text
A few comments are offered in the light of about thirty years of activities linked to the information flow in astronomy and of about two decades of blossoming of electronic networks and tools including the World-Wide Web. Some points are emphasized (such as the changing sociology of data centres) and wrong expectations are pointed out (such as the all-electronic era)

Da anathemata a ornamenta. Sul riuso dei rilievi votivi greci in epoca romana

    No full text
Quite a few number of Greek votive reliefs of classical and hellenistic age have been discovered in Rome, in its neighbourhoods and in Campania. In spite of the very few data regarding the finding context, with the exception of the items found in Pompeii, these monuments can be generally referred to residential areas. Some recent studies held by the Author have the purpose to reset the Greek votive reliefs into the original decorative program of the houses, in order to understand which function and semantic value they had assumed in their new collocation.

Association between treatment with colchicine and improved survival in a single-centre cohort of adult hospitalised patients with COVID-19 pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome

Objectives: The outbreak of COVID-19 posed the issue of urgently identifying treatment strategies. Colchicine was considered for this purpose based on well-recognised anti-inflammatory effects and potential antiviral properties. In the present study, colchicine was proposed to patients with COVID-19, and its effects compared with 'standard-of-care' (SoC). Methods: In the public hospital of Esine, northern Italy, 140 consecutive inpatients, with virologically and radiographically confirmed COVID-19 admitted in the period 5-19 March 2020, were treated with 'SoC' (hydroxychloroquine and/or intravenous dexamethasone; and/or lopinavir/ritonavir). They were compared with 122 consecutive inpatients, admitted between 19 March and 5 April 2020, treated with colchicine (1 mg/day) and SoC (antiviral drugs were stopped before colchicine, due to potential interaction). Results: Patients treated with colchicine had a better survival rate as compared with SoC at 21 days of follow-up (84.2% (SE=3.3%) vs 63.6% (SE=4.1%), p=0.001). Cox proportional hazards regression survival analysis showed that a lower risk of death was independently associated with colchicine treatment (HR=0.151 (95% CI 0.062 to 0.368), p<0.0001), whereas older age, worse PaO2/FiO2, and higher serum levels of ferritin at entry were associated with a higher risk. Conclusion: This proof-of-concept study may support the rationale of use of colchicine for the treatment of COVID-19. Efficacy and safety must be determined in controlled clinical trial

The case for international coordination of electricity regulation : evidence from the measurement of efficiency in South America

    No full text
A decade long experience shows that monitoring the performance of public and private monopolies in South America is proving to be the hard part of the reform process. The operators who control most of the information needed for regulatory purposes have little interest in volunteering their dissemination unless they have an incentive to do so. The authors argue that, in spite of, and maybe because of, a much weaker information base and governance structure, South America's electricity sector could pursue an approach that relies on performance rankings based on comparative efficiency measures. The authors show that with the rather modest data currently available publicly, such an approach could yield useful results. They provide estimates of efficiency levels in South America's main distribution companies between 1994 and 2000. Moreover, the authors show how relatively simple tests can be used by regulators to check the robustness of their results and strengthen their position at regulatory hearings.Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Enterprise Development&Reform,Labor Policies,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Environmental Economics&Policies,Economic Theory&Research,Geographical Information Systems,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Educational Technology and Distance Education
