Creative AI for HRI Design Explorations
Design fixation, a phenomenon describing designers' adherence to pre-existing ideas or concepts that constrain design outcomes, is particularly prevalent in human-robot interaction (HRI), for example, due to collectively held and stabilised imaginations of what a robot should look like or behave. In this paper, we explore the contribution of creative AI tools to overcome design fixation and enhance creative processes in HRI design. In a four weeks long design exploration, we used generative text-to-image models to ideate and visualise robotic artefacts and robot sociotechnical imaginaries. We exchanged results along with reflections through a digital postcard format. We demonstrate the usefulness of our approach to imagining novel robot concepts, surfacing existing assumptionsand robot stereotypes, and situating robotic artefacts in context. We discuss the contribution to designerly HRI practices and conclude with lessons learnt for using creative AI tools as an emerging design practice in HRI research and beyond.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Design Aesthetic
The decoration of the Imperial Villa of Pesaro is examined, requested by Duke Francesco Maria della Rovere. In light of the few documents and the scarce evidence of the sources, the interventions of the numerous painters involved under the guidance of Girolamo Genga are traced. Next to Francesco Menzocchi and Raffaeillino del Colle, the author proposes for the first time to recognize the young Nicolò dell'Abate, at work in the room with the Oath of Sermide. Other clarifications concern the landscapes painted by Camillo Mantovano
Designerly ways of knowing in HRI: Broadening the scope of design-oriented HRI through the concept of intermediate-level knowledge
Interest in design methods and tools has been steadily growing in HRI. Yet, design is not acknowledged as a discipline with specific epistemology and methodology. Designerly HRI work is validated through user studies which, we argue, provide a limited account of the knowledge design produces. This paper aims to broaden current understanding of designerly HRI work and its contributions by unpacking what designerly knowledge is and how to produce it. Through a critical analysis of current HRI design literature, we identify a lack of work dedicated to understanding the conceptual implications of robotic artifacts. These, in fact, are implicit carriers of crucial HRI knowledge that can challenge established assumptions about how a robot should look, act, and be like. We conclude by discussing a set of practices desirable to legitimize designerly HRI work, and calling for further research addressing the conceptual implications designerly HRI work.Human Information Communication Desig
A video-based assessment of likeability and usability in a play application of robots for children
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to conduct research with children, who have different abilities from adults, in terms of language understanding and level of attention, is a challenging task, especially concerning novel interactive systems such as social robots. Consequently, self-reporting methods are often replaced or supplemented by observational methods that are usually carried out taking advantage of video recordings. However, some limitations make this approach challenging for studies conducted with groups of children in real-world environments, whose relevance is being addressed more and more frequently in human-robot interaction (HRI) research. Thus, there is a growing need for rigorous observation approaches in unstructured test environments. Design/methodology/approach: This paper presents an alternative analysis approach, in relation to an experimental child-robot interaction (CRI) application, which was developed at the Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University, China. The proposed methodology is based on the analysis of video recordings of in-wild activities of children with a robot. The methodology has the aim of providing a framework to facilitate knowledge identification and structuring. It was implemented for experiment evaluation and validation purposes and to propose a reference structure for the organization of new experiments and the stimulation of new ideas and activities in the design process. Findings: This methodology provides a logical structure, which can be used to identify the effectiveness or limits of design choices, pertaining to such aspects as the morphology or movement of robots or the choice of their specific role in education, all of which play crucial roles in the design process and could be improved to achieve better results. This structured identification is a practical implication for the design process, above all when it is oriented toward social robots and their interaction with children or elderly senile people. In this case, the outcomes were the identification of important elements of an experiment (psychological profiles of the involved children and possible problems or risks) and their impact on the design process. Originality/value: The methodological approach, which structures and uses cognitive maps to elaborate multicriteria evaluation models, is not new to the operations research field (where it is defined as a multimethodology application of Soft OR), but it has not yet been applied in the field of HRI studies, to analyze children’s perception of a robot and to identify the factors that can affect a good CRI or to structure knowledge that can be shared to guide the design process of robots for the experience of children playing.Human Information Communication Desig

"Pathology and Seductiveness in Williams' Language of Love"
Taking stock from the most and less recent studies on W.C.Wlliams (K. Burke, M Perloff, J Riddel, A. Gelpi), the author examines the flower metaphor in ints classical and botanic aspects to look at the way in which the poet makes it a metaphor for his own heart problems and, as well, a symbol of seductiveness
The purpose of this thesis was to contribute to the advancement of the understanding of school failure through a comprehensive study of the historical structural conditions, the public policies, the school administration, the classrooom relationships, and some observations of the teacher and the students in a particular setting. The case study focused an elementary public school in a low class neighborhood of Frederico Westphalen, RS, Brazil - a city of ... inhabitants, distant 500 Km from the Rio Grande do Sul state capital. The thesis presents five chapters. As an introduction, the author justifies her choice in terms of theme and setting, followed by a description of the methodological approach, which combines a historical macro analysis with an analysis of the school and classroom settings. Therefore, the text presents a brief history of schooling in the area (an original contribution stressing the fight for schooling), an analysis of regional and local social, political and economic conditions, and specially an analysis of major educational statistics which demonstrate the severe situation of repetition and school dropouts at elementary grades. The theoretical framework brings together a wide range of studies, mostly published in Brazil, about the phenomenon of schooling and school failure. But it also takes ideas such as the Antonio Gramsci's thought to establish relationships between the historical/macro conditions and the studied school scene. The case study presents several observations about the school project, in terms of social and pedagogical objetives and action, focusing the school administration and the teacher, the students, their lives and social representions of schooling and learning. In conclusion, the author stresses the structural and conjunctural limits of different orders which condition the public policies, the educational administration and teaching. But she also points out the concepts and beliefs that underground the daily acting of school personnel, pupils and their families. On the other part, she indicates that there are many important possibilities for overcoming the school failure syndrome: revising the understanding of school/world of work relationships and the major objectives of intelectual and professional education; the democratization of school systems' administration through public policies emphasising equality, and the value of local school projects; and the need for the development of teachers' political and technical competentes. The professionalization of protagonist teachers requires their understanding of the global setting and of the dialectical relationships of public policies and daily classroom pedagogical acting
