The highest reference for Muslims in understanding Islamic law is the Qur'an and hadith with the hadith ranked second after the Qur'an. In the history of Islam, hadith is a source of polemic in Islamic law. There are many criticisms that are focused on the hadith, ranging from the problem of codification, transmission, and fiqh al-hadith. The criticism emerged with the basic assumption that the hadith is different from the Qur'an. However, in the modern era, the problem of hadith is more likely to be a matter of understanding. Among the problems that still occur today are understanding of the rukyathilal traditions related to the determination of the beginning of the lunar month. The discourse about the difference in the determination of the beginning of the Hijri month is a consequence of the different points of view of understanding the rukyathilal traditions. Therefore the method of understanding the hadith on the rukyathilal is something urgent to study. Based on this background, the author then formulates two problems, i.e., (1) What are the implications of Yusuf al-Qaradawi's understanding of the rukyathilal traditions? and (2) What are the advantages and disadvantages of Yusuf al-Qaradawi's method regarding the understanding of hadith? This is a library research with a historical approach (intellectual history and social history). Data related to the analyzed problems are searched and examined directly from the main sources, i.e., books by Yusuf al-Qaradawi, such as Kaifa Nata’a>malu ma’a as-Sunnah an-Nabawiyyah Ma’a>lim wa D}awa>bit}, Taisi>r al-Fiqh fi> D}aui al-Qur’a>n wa as-Sunnah (Fiqh as}- S}iya>m), as-Sunnah Mas}dara>n li al-Ma’rifah wa al-H}ad}a>rah, and several other works, as well as the nine hadith books (al-kutub at-tis'ah). In analyzing the data, the author uses descriptive analytical methods, comparative methods, and intertextuality. The analytical descriptive method in this study serves to describe the research data. The comparative method is technically used to compare the views of the scholars before al-Qaradawi with the view of Yusuf al-Qaradawi regarding the understanding of hadith. The comparison here is intended to obtain an overview of the views of the ulama with the view of Yusuf al-Qaradaw

Paleoenvironmental analysis and cyclicity of the Mustahil Formation (Cretaceous of Central Somalia)

A Mustahil section, measured at Bur Bitthale near Belet Uen (Central Somalia), is here described. The succession, dated as Late Aptian to Early-Middle Albian age on the basis of good faunal evidence consists of two well developed thickening-coarsening sequences, where four different facies have been recognized. The cap of both sequences is represented by a rudistid framework dominated by Eoradiolites lyratus. We interpret these cycles as shoaling up parasequences, which are the result of two depositional regressions produced by the progradation of broad shallow-water carbonate systems over the adjacent ramp and deep shelf. -from Author
