Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, SUNY at Stony BrookVibrationally selected PIRI spectra of the B~\tilde{B} state of fluorobenzene and chlorobenzene cations were acquired via the origin and different vibrational levels of the respective ground ionic states (X~\tilde{X} state). The obtained vibrational structure in the PIRI spectra along with electronic structure calculations, have resulted in reassignment of the symmetries of the B~\tilde{B} states of substituted mono-halogenated benzene cations. The BˉXˉ\bar{B}-\bar{X} transitions were found to be allowed π\pi to π\pi transitions with the origin of the B~\tilde{B} state of fluorobenzene cation at 21075cm121075 cm^{-1}. Along with electronic structure calculations, the PIRI spectrum of chlorobenzene indicates that the B~X~\tilde{B}-\tilde{X} transition is also an allowed 2B12B1^{2}B_{1}-^{2}B_{1} transition with the origin being at 18219cm118219 cm^{-1}

    Façon de dire, manière de penser. Les piri — devinettes — de Tahiti

    This paper deals with piri (Tahitian riddles), with the images they convey, the type of relationship they exhibit with the world of reality, and their inherent logic. It highlights the heterogeneousness of the piri category, which is not only due to the variety of the topics and objects brought to mind but also to the various functions they fulfil in handing down traditional knowledge. The comparison of these riddles with other types of contemporary religious discourse, which share a similar formal way of thinking, brings the author to emphasize the importance of Christian acculturation in Eastern Polynesia and its effect on piri. Finally, the analysis focuses on how these riddles reflect a form of thought and of « popular culture » which are, after all, quite universal.Cet article s'intéresse aux piri ou devinettes tahitiennes, aux images spécifiques qu'elles véhiculent, au type de rapport au réel qu'elles manifestent, et à leur logique intrinsèque. Il met en évidence l'hétérogénéité de la catégorie des piri qui tient non seulement à celle des thèmes et objets évoqués, mais aussi aux différentes fonctions qu'elles remplissent en matière de transmission des savoirs. Rapprochant ces devinettes d'autres types de discours religieux contemporains également structurés suivant un mode de pensée formelle, l'auteur souligne aussi l'importance de l'acculturation chrétienne en Polynésie orientale et son incidence sur les piri. Enfin, l'analyse porte sur la manière dont ces devinettes manifestent une forme dépensée et de « culture populaire » somme toute assez universelles.Saura Bruno. Façon de dire, manière de penser. Author Institution: H.-Heine Universit\""{a}t D\""{u}sseldorf, Institut f\""{u}r Physikalische ChemieThe new developed IR-PIRI (IR-Photo Induced Rydberg Ionization) spectroscopy can be used to investigate CH-, NH-, and OH-stretching vibrations of aromatic cations and hydrogen-bonded clusters. IR-PIRI spectroscopy is a MATI (MAss Threshold Ionization) depletion method, i.e. the Rydberg neutrals contributing to a MATI signal can be autoionized by exciting CH-, NH-, and OH-stretching vibrations of the ionic core. The knowledge of these vibrational frequencies lead to important information on structure and reactivity of the cation. IR-PIRI spectroscopy offers the possibility to perform a state selective spectroscopy of the cation, since different vibrational levels of the ion can be obtained by MATI spectroscopy. In case of (larger) clusters which cannot be investigated by MATI spectroscopy the CH-, NH-, and OH-stretching vibrations of the ions can be obtained by resonant IR-Photodissociation spectroscopy. Using this method the ions are generated by a resonant R2PI (Resonant 2-Photon Ionization) process which is mass and isomer selective with respect to the neutral cluster. The ionic cluster dissociates after resonant excitation of CH, NH-, or OH-stretching vibrations. IR-PIRI and IR-Photodissociation spectroscopy have been applied to the ions of different substituted benzenes, indole and the corresponding hydrogen-bonded clusters with water

    Taking advantage of the publication of the first two volumes of Kitabi Bahriye (log-book) by Piris Reis, the great man of the sea and Turkish geographer and cartographer who lived between the XVth and the XVIth century, Geo Pistarino draws a concise biography of the author. He analyses his map dated from 1513 and gives us its editorial tradition. He stresses its importance for the history of geographic discoveries and, more precisely, for those of Christopher Colombus, and he underlines some of the problems still discussed today. The map of the New World area, drawn by Piri Reis, indirectly derives from the one prepared by Christopher Colombus in 1498, during his third trip. Christopher Colombus had sent it to the Kings of Spain and it was the base of the successive «Andalusian trips». In Kitab, written in 1521 and the second version in 1525-1526, Piri informs the reader about the continent he calls «Antilles», he affirms that Genova is Christopher Colombus's homeland and makes allusions to Genova's political situation at the time.Saisissant l'occasion de la publication des deux premiers volumes du Kitabi Bahriye, (Livre de la marine) de Piri Reis, le grand homme de la mer, géographe et cartographe turc, qui vécut à cheval sur le 15eme et 16eme siècle, Geo Pistarino trace une biographie sommaire de l’auteur. Il analyse sa carte du 1513 et en donne la tradition éditoriale. Il insiste sur l’importance qu'elle a eu pour l'histoire des découvertes géographiques et tout particulièrement pour celles de Christophe Colomb, et souligne quelques problèmes encore en discussion de nos jours. La carte de la partie du Nouveau Monde, tracée par Piri Reis, dérive, indirectement, de celle dessinée par Colomb en 1498, durant son troisième voyage, qu'il avait lui-même envoyée aux Souverains d'Espagne, et que fut à la base des successifs «Voyages Andalous». Dans le Kitab, rédigé en 1521 et en 1525-26 en ce que concerne sa deuxième version, Piri informe le lecteur sur le continent qu'il appelle «Antilles»; il affirme que Gênes est la patrie de Christophe Colomb et fait allusion à la situation politique de Gênes à son époque

    Thomas, Piri

    Initially censored, shunned, or ignored by the literary establishment, both in the United States and Puerto Rico, New York Puerto Rican author Piri Thomas’s 1967 autobiographical coming-of-age story, Down These Mean Streets, gained great visibility as a sociological document when it was first published, garnering much media attention and recognition for Thomas as a spokesman for the New York Puerto Rican community, a role that he embraced as part of his social activism. But Thomas’s work, which includes the sequel to Down These Mean Streets—Savior, Savior, Hold My Hand; a prison memoir, Seven Long Times; a book of short stories, Stories from El Barrio; and performance and poetry, would not acquire canonical literary status as founding a new U.S. Puerto Rican or Nuyorican literature until the 1980s when critics in American universities began to introduce Nuyorican literature as part of a curricular revision of the U.S. literary canon that sought to include minority literatures in American college courses. In the 1990s, Thomas’s status as a founding figure of Nuyorican literature and identity would give way to a more complex view of him as an author, as queer and feminist scholars of color began to examine the relationship of race and national and ethnic identity and belonging to questions of gender and sexuality in his writing. Thomas would then emerge as a more ambiguous, intercultural, and intersectional author, indeed as emblematic of the in-between or abject zone that the hierarchical binaries of dominant discourses of race, national, and ethnic belonging often situated Latino/as in, invisibilizing them. If in the late 1960s and early 1970s Thomas’s work became representative of the communities and subcultures whose voices were elided in American society, in the 1990s young U.S. Latino/a writers would adopt his work as emblematic of a resistant Afro-Latino otherness that could be deployed against an increasingly homogenizing version of Latinidad or Latino/a identity as a racially and ethnically unified commodity in the plural neoliberal American literary and cultural market. Since the 2000s, readings of Thomas’s work have continued to address the topic of otherness in his work, interrogating its normalization and focusing on the psychoanalytic and political issues of racial melancholia, introjection, and the status of lack in subject formation in his writing. Another trend has set about situating Thomas’s writing at the intersection between colonial and diasporic metropolitan racial formations, connecting it with Puerto Rico’s racialized literary canon, Caribbean “intra-colonial” diasporic relations, and Filipino American literature and culture. Yet another line of research has focused on the author’s narrative and performative choices rather than on his abject condition. And his performance in poetry has begun to get some well-deserved critical attention. All in all, the challenge of Thomas criticism remains the ability of scholars to establish a dialogue between the aporias and impasses that his writing is situated in (that is, questions of racial abjection and coloniality) and his skill and imagination as a writer and performer, between what he characterizes, on the one hand, as the “bullets” and, on the other, as the “butterflies” that constitute and propel his writing.</p

    The essential oil components of fresh and dry aerial parts of Callistemon citrinus, monthly harvested from Iran during a year, were compared. The EO contents of dry plant samples were dramatically higher than the fresh materials. The dry sample collected in March with 1.10 ± 0.04% and fresh in August with 0.16 ± 0.01% (w/w), possessed the highest and lowest EO yields, respectively. From thirty-two identified aroma phytoconstituents, 1,8-cineole was the major compound with quantity variation of 60.01% in dry sample collected in January and 33.92% in fresh from August. In summer, the amount of α-pinene as the second predominant volatile terpenoid was raised, while dry sample in August (46.92%) was the richest. The present study explicitly demonstrates the impact of harvesting period on volatile oil contents of C. citrinus and the findings are considerable to obtain the favourite EO compositions for consuming in food and phyto-pharmaceutical industries

    Background and Aims: Blood and components are more frequently used in surgery and non-surgical procedures. In medical procedures blood transfusion is important and needs adequate expertise and practice, thus adequate knowledge in healthcare workers of this procedure is essential. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study is designed to assess the knowledge of healthcare workers about proper methods of blood transfusion, and how to promote their knowledge for proper performance if their knowledge is inadequate. Data were collected with aimed questionnaire and analyzed by statistics software. Result: The study population mainly comprised 122 healthcare workers (HCWs). The main findings from this study showed that 26.2% of healthcare workers (HCWs) had low-level knowledge, 22.1% moderate and 51.6% acceptable knowledge. We did not find any significant correlation between knowledge of HCWs and years in profession, participation in training, number of blood transfusions per day, age, gender, etc. ( P < 0.05). Discussion and Conclusion: Results strongly emphasized the need for a curriculum to promote knowledge of HCWs about blood transfusion because we found low and moderate level of knowledge in approximately half our samples and on the importance of blood transfusion procedure, suggesting that more attempts should be made to build up knowledge about blood transfusion
